DeWalt DW788 Variable-Speed Scroll Saw with Stand

Heavy-Duty 20" Variable-Speed Scroll Saw. Shown with optional work light (#60198, sold separately).

Features:

  • Double parallel-link arm design dramatically reduces vibration and noise, for extremely accurate cuts.
  • Exclusive tool-free blade holders allow blade changes in seconds.
  • On-off switch, electronic variable speed, flexible dust blower and blade-tensioning lever are all located on the front upper arm for added convenience.
  • Arm design moves the tool's pivot points from the back of the saw to the front, shortening the arm movement for smoother, quieter operation.
  • Arm lifts so blade can be easily threaded through the material for inside cuts.
  • Unique arm design keeps the blade perpendicular to the work, dramatically reducing over- or under- cutting.
  • Oversized, cast-iron table provides excellent material support and bevels 45° left and right.
  • There is an additional $10 shipping charge on this item.

DeWalt DW788 Variable-Speed Scroll Saw with Stand
Been wanting one of these for a long time finally got one. Been looking at the excalibur but $1000. price tag I`am not, that much into scroll work.

Had bought the porter cable 18 " from lowes had to take it back
just did not like it, hard to change the blades out But it did have a rack and pinion gear for the table I did like that about it.

Think that dewalt put the rack and pinion on the 788 it would make better

The 788 is a beast cuts hard wood with ease

Sure beat what I had

When Rockler had the sale on the dewalt I just had to try it out

So far it been a good one, time will tell.

Favorite saw
I started out with Craftsman single speed, moved up to variable speed. Once I got a handle on how to work a scroll saw I found this one at the Rockler store and my mouth started to water. I finally pulled the trigger and bought it. I have been so very happy with it. I thought I would get a "better" one and purchased the RBI Hawk, but I kept coming back to the Dewalt. Then I bought an Excaliber (used) Still, to this day this Dewalt saw is my go to machine.

Love it. This is my first scroll saw and am still on the learning curve. No vibration and easy to change blades. Do need to figure a simple way to hold the upper arm up while changing blades.

surprise
I bought this as a surprise for my husband. I hear on a daily basis how happy he is with it and how he enjoys using it. For me it is quiet and I don't have to listen to the screech of the other one he was using.

Excellent product
The Dewalt scroll saw is not cheap but it worth every bit that I paid for it. It is very stable and capable. I have already used it for two projects to cut veneer and works as expected.
Veneered end table with Mapa burl, walnut, sapele, and hard maple.

this saw is awesome I could not wait to work on it my husband wanted me to do a couple practice cuts I did a couple straight lines then just went to a project and they came out good and blade changes are quick, only thing I have to put a piece of under arm to keep it up which is not a problem maybe they can fix that instead of having to get an accessory to hold it and I got the light also and it works good.

Great saw
Had a cheap scroll saw for the past 20 years. What a difference in this saw. Very smooth operation, low vibration, easy blade changes and tension setup. Great deal for the money, especially with the free stand. Have made several things with it already. I also highly recommend the Dewalt light made for this saw. Free stand was a great deal that made this the cheapest price on the web, but found the light for less on another site.

Good saw, but the bracket holding the table is not machined well, so that there is a small amount of wobble in the table. A shim took care of it, but will be a problem if you want to Cut at an angle

I have a great woodshop, but with the cold weather I have chosen to work in my indoor hobby room in the house. This creates basically no saw dust.

Is pinless or pinned blades?
Coral G on Apr 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is pinless, and is a great saw. I would recommend this saw to anyone.
Can a foot switch be adapted to this saw?
Jim M on Dec 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: ABSOLUTELY THAT ALL I USE IT GIVE YOU BETTER CONTROL
What height wood can be cut on the Dewalt?
Donald on Apr 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's made to cut up to 2" thick wood. From personal experience, I've cut up to 1 1/2" without any issues, but you'll need to go to a much lower teeth per inch blade and slow down speed considerably for both thicker and denser woods.
Now easy is blade changing for fret work?
Mac S on Nov 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have to say I find the blade changing a bit tedious. There has to be a trick that I have yet to figure out. Sometimes I can get it in on the first try, other times it takes me a while to get it in, but that may be because I am too lazy to get out of my chair and look underneath to get accurate set. But, the rest of this saws capabilities certainly trumps that minor (or operators) flaw.
will it also cut metal (with the correct blades, of course)?
James H on Jan 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've cut thin (1/8") plain brass & aluminum without any difficulty. I use cutting oil to reduce friction & blade wear. I've heard there's a source for diamond-encrusted blades online but I've never researched them. They might work for heavier gauge metals.
What is the size of the table?
S S on Dec 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The table is 16" wide and 24" deep. Since the front of the table is round, you have 8" in front of the blade as well as on each side. Very nice support!
I don't like the reviews on the hold-down arm. Read a few reviews how it doesn't hold the wood down, and it jumps all over the place. Has Dewalt fixed this? Can anyone help me out with this?
Terri G on Apr 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have. No problem with the hold down because I don't use it. Have not used hold down on a scroll saw for 15 years or more. I am having a little problem with the speed control, some times it doss not work quite right.
