Rockler Distinctive Series Dovetail Router Bits - 8mm Shank

Rating:
70% of 100

These top-quality carbide bits work with wood thicknesses ranging from 1/8" to 5/8", allowing you to cut joints for delicate jewelry boxes, as well as for sturdy drawers. They are ideal for use with our Distinctive Series Dovetail Templates (sold separately). 8° dovetail angle offers a more traditional look and less chance of breakage at the corner of the tail. Thicker 8mm shanks minimize vibration and chatter. Both work perfectly with the 5/16" straight bit included with Rockler Dovetail Jig (#22818, sold separately). Unconditionally guaranteed. Precision balanced for smooth operation. Requires router with 1/2" collet and adapter.

8mm Shank Gives Accurate Cuts
Use to make through dovetails with a Leigh D4. The 8mm shank produces tighter dovetail joints and less tear out than the 1/4" shank in the cutting of both tails and pins. One improvement Rockler could make is to add a small, slightly larger ring at one end of the spacer that reduces the 1/2" collet to 8mm. It can fall into the collet out of reach if you're not careful. I did a work around by wrapping a very narrow strip of tape around one end.

One of the best gifts I ever got.
It has made some of the prettiest jewelry box corners ever. My wife got it for me about 20 years ago and I have made a lot of stuff. But, the most important was jewelry boxes for my daughters, and than jewelry boxes for my granddaughters and now jewelry boxes for my 2 great granddaughters. A lot of other things but to me these are the most important. I hope you all enjoy yours as much as I am mine.

It would have been helpful to...
It would have been helpful to have realized the 5/16" notation for this bit not only denoted bit size but shank size also. Now I have a bit that I cannot use until I obtain an adapter to fit my 3/8" router collet. Editor's note: shanks on these bits are 8mm rather than 5/16". 8mm shanks requires router with 1/2" collet and the use of the 24635 adapter listed in this offer.

Product may be excellent, but  bit shank is 8mm which is nonstandard if your used to 1/4 - 1/2 shanks. Unusable without adapter.

Collet Reducer doesn't release
The Rockler dovetail jig comes with these. The reducer gets stuck in standard self-releasing collet. Had to destroy bits to remove them. One of them had not even beeñ run so shouldn't have been that tight in the first place. First had trouble on brand new Hitachi router. Thought it was the collet. Then tried on Porter and Cable well worn router and same issue. Bad design!
