Doweling Jig Kits

These no-nonsense doweling jigs deliver strong joints in very little time. Unlike many other doweling jigs, there is no need to transfer marks from the face to the edge, or measure and mark with a tape measure. Just set the two parts together and strike a line across the center of the joint. Thanks to the transparent face and reference lines on the jig, you can then line up the jig perfectly with just that one line. Clamp it in place, drill and you're done! Available in a value-priced complete set with case, or individually as needed. If you already have several of the jigs, an empty case to hold all three is also available (#46456).

Features:

  • Made to last with 3/16'' thick acrylic faces and hardened steel drill guides
  • No need to transfer marks from the face to the edge, or measure and mark with a tape measure
  • Precisely etched centerline for the joint, plus center lines for two dowels
  • Hang holes allow convenient wall storage, or purchase the accessory case (#46456, sold separately)

I DO like it but the vibration of the bit spinning sometimes moves the jig from the clamped position unless it’s clamped with a heavy duty clamp.

Not as good as I hoped.
I did not get the kit. I bought the 1/4 in. single. The problem is, it did not center on a 1 by. The other problem, the plexiglass is flexible and let the holes turn so they were not straight.

Disappointed with results
I was not able to make quality dowel joints. Always a bit off both for miter joints and butt joints. I gave up and went back to mortice and tenon joints. More work but better results. I'm glad I only got the 3/8" and not the entire kit.

Inaccurate center alignment - bad joints
Frustrating:
1. Mark a good square line on both pieces
2. Drill the holes using tight clamps on both pieces with the mark exactly on it.
3. Insert 3/8" dowels.
4. Re-attach the pieces.
5. Realize that the center line you marked is no longer matching on the pieces but almost 1/8" off.

My 3/8" jig made all my joints 2/32 to 3/32 off after using it.
It's not a big deal if you are using it for panel glue up, but for jointing it is a disaster. I had to widen all the holes after this to make my joints match the marks (critical for my project).
This makes this jig pretty useless.

Used it for the first time this afternoon, and the stop collar snapped in half when I was tightening it down on the drill bit. Holes are slightly off when drilled resulting in an uneven joint. If you need to do some dowel joints, save yourself some frustration by getting a better quality jig....

scott m on May 31, 2018
It looks like a great idea. My face frames are all either 1" or 2" wide and I try to dowel them consistently. This should mean that I can simply lay the jig in the correct spot and drill without having to mark the pin locations.

Which size should i use for 5/8 thick plywood ? According to your recommendation it should be half of the thickness which mean it should be 5/16. You do not have 5/16 ? thank you for your support.
Chris on Jul 14, 2018
Can you change the angle of the jig?
Michelle R on Jul 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don’t think I would. Maybe try it with a carpenters square
For the 3/8 jig, should you use this on thicker than 3/4 thickness?
Abel R on Sep 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is generally recommended by most sources that you use a dowel half the thickness of the board. So, 3/8 dowels for 3/4" wood, 1/2 dowels for 1" wood etc.
