Dust Right® Dust Separator

Get better suction from shop vacuum! Turn it into a two stage dust extractor and eliminate clogged filters!

Item #
45556
Rating:
88% of 100

Turn any shop vacuum with a 2-1/4'' ID outlet into a 2-stage dust and chip separator. When used with most power tools and shop vacuums, the Dust Right® Separator captures sawdust, wood chips, and other debris before it enters your vacuum, preventing the loss of suction power caused by a clogged vacuum filter. The five-caster base makes it exceptionally stable and easy to maneuver around the shop. Plus, hoses connect inside the in/out ports, preventing unintentional disconnections. The Dust Right® Separator creates a cyclonic air flow that causes most wood dust particles and other materials that are heavier than air to separate, preventing them from being passed to the vacuum. The vortex effect that is created prevents the loss of suction caused by prematurely clogged filters. For use with shop vacs that are 4HP or more.

Features:
  • 10-gallon translucent bucket is easy to empty and easy to tell when it's full
  • Holds twice the capacity of competitors' products
  • Maximum performance can be expected when using the Dust Right® Separator in woodworking or general shop cleaning applications
  • Includes approximately 36'' long flex-form hose to connect to your shop vacuum

Dust Right Dust Separator
I have had my dust separator for a few weeks now. It has been working great with my small shop vac. I also purchased the 12' hose with connections and have attached the system to my orbital sander, as well as sweeper attachments. The suction on my shop vac has never been stronger.

Saved me a fortune on vacuum bags
I've had this for a while now. It is connected to the Nilfisk vacuum that I use as a shop vacuum. I use it for general cleaning in my shop and for dust collection for small tools -- router and sander, for example.

With all the attention that the "cyclone" separators get, I wasn't sure that this unit would be effective. In short, this thing works great! I don't remember the last time I needed to replace the vacuum bag or filter in my shop vacuum.

I connected this to my vacuum using the provided connecting host and then plugged the hose from vacuum into the Rockler separator. Everything fit perfectly.

It's one of my best shop purchases ever. My wife says the dust separator and vacuum look like a trash bin being followed by R2-D2

Dust Right Dust Separator
If you're on the fence as to purchasing a dust separator system, I would recommend this one. Price is right, performance beyond my expectations. We live in a 1790s Cape and the cellar floor and field stone wall sills were covered in sand, rock, cobwebs and years of dust. Combined with a Rigid 6hp shop vac, it was amazing how much material was captured in the separator. All of it! Nothing in the shop vac except for a fine, fine trace of dust. Wood chips and saw dust are a piece of cake...

Reviews were good so decided to try.

Tried cyclone DIY separators to adapt to your own bucket system with poor results. Vacuum too strong for small diameter cyclone resulting in pulling sawdust out of cyclone area and into vacuum. This one has much larger cyclone diameter ensuring gravity will separate solids to the capture tank. To get a larger dia - proven DIY cyclone online, cost is $59. This one has a large enough cyclone i'm certain will work. Plus a transparent tank included, with wheels, whats not to like.

I presently own a 12" planer, 6" joiner, Shop Smith, 14" band saw, 12" bench top drill press, plus several smaller hand held power tools, e.g. - sander, plate joiner, router. If I coupled the Dust Right Separator to let's say a 14/16 gallon shop vacuum, would this combination be adequate for most/all of the above mentioned machines ? Reason I ask is simply I own an older Delta m/n-50-179 dust collector, 580cfm which I,m not sure if it's still in production, and also it can be a real beast to have to empty( both barrel & bag) on occasion. Would greatly appreciate an answer, since casting off the Delta(runs fine-But) I could sure free up some space in my small garage shop. P.S. My 15year old shop vac needs to retire too. Thank You. Roger.
Roger P on May 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I recently purchased the Dust Right Separator and connected it to a new 16 gallon vac with 7.25 Hp motor. I use with with a miter saw, small sander, router and band saw and other small electric hand tools. The system works well for me. You just need to keep an eye on how fast the separator is filling up. I have not had any problems but have learned not to let the separator fill much beyond about 1/2 before I empty it out. I really like my Dust Right Separator and wish I had purchased one earlier. Good luck with your system.
Can you use the seperator with a harbor freight dust collector?
cfry11 on Sep 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This separator is recommended for vacuums only. It is too small to use with dust collectors which use 4" hose size.
Can you use this as a first stage in a standard dust collection system? I believe there is a 4 inch hose.
Richard B on Apr 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, as the first stage holds the bulky waste. It come with a 4” hose for connecting the vacuum to collector and then the vacuum hose connects to the collector than to your tool or saw.

BEST ANSWER: It is approx. 27" tall with an 18" diameter
Will this work with a 3.25 hp vac?
edcoba on Jan 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: It works with any size vac really. It is a mostly airtight canister that just lets the heavier particles drop in the bucket so the CFM are roughly the same as without the separator.

I use a 3.25 hp shop vac with this separator and it works great.
Why am I getting shocked when cleaning up dust with this separator? It doesn't happen if I just use the shop vac.
JoelO on Apr 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Joel, type this into your favorite web search engine: “dust extraction static”. Your shop vacuum is likely grounded and/or does not spin the debris enough to generate a static charge. The separator is all about the spin and can generate a lot of static in the right circumstances. To stop static, you need to ground the vacuum hose you are using. Wrap a bare wire around the hose along its entire length a few coils and then grounf it close by your separator.
I have a rockler wall vac #44179. Please advise the adaptors/hose(s) required to pair them correctly?

There has to be an easier way of removing the top to empty the dust collector. I struggle with it each time I have to empty it. Does anyone have a solution for this?
Richard on Apr 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The wheels on the bottom don't allow for it to remain stationary to twist. I have to use my legs to straddle it from the side. Perhaps a longer 2x4 under the wheels to keep it from twisting while removing the top.
I recently purchased the Dust Right Separator, but the two hose connections ( Part F) to the plastic top do not fit securely - what am I doing wrong?
Scott M on May 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: My vacuum hoses fit tight in the top ports. Some vac hoses seem a bit undersize. I use some duct tape on the smaller inserts, and they fit snug.
Could this work with a buffing machine?
Lucas W on Mar 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don’t think it would be beneficialEnter an answer to this question.
how do i know which is in and out or does it not matter which hose goes to which port on the separator?
Dave L on Jan 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: It shouldn't matter as long as the elbows are installed correctly. It is very easy to set up and will make intuitive sense when you see it.
Can this be set stationary with the vacuum and hook to a 2-inch line down the wall?
max16x2000 on Sep 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: yes, rockler has a strapping accessory that will hold the separator to the vacuum
I'm a small shop guy, thinking I can use this, but I want to make sure I have the correct or best recommended shop vacuum that will make this system work best. What Shop Vac Spec's should I aim for?
gary m on Nov 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I used a shop vac, vacuum, it was a 12gallon 5 model, 2 and a quarter standard tube. The vac is simple and has served me well for over 12 yrs with out a problem. I used the Dust Right Separator for only a short while, with the suggested purchased attachments. It worked fine although with a planer it filled up fast. I am looking at purchasing a larger chip system.
I just bought the dust separator. Should I use a bag in my vacuum or would it work better without a vacuum bag?
Michael S on Mar 9, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Putting a bag in your vacuum shouldn't effect the separator. Use of the bag will help you clean up the smaller bits that do get missed, but the separator should make it longer between new bags.

Has anyone come up with a solution for the static electricity?
CURT W on Feb 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: While the vacuum is unplugged, spray the separator with an anti-static spray designed for the clothes dryer.
Do the 2 blue portions lock somehow? Whenever, I turn on the vacuum, the bottom is sucked up and the container collapses into itself due to the suction. Thinking about using tape or PVC glue if I can’t figure it out.
JR B on Jan 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes they do lock together. Be sure the top half is turned the right way. No tape or glue needed.
I'm considering the Oneida Dust deputy and this Rockler unit. Anyone have experience with both? Pros/cons?
