Earlex HV6003PUS HVLP SprayPort Sprayer

From the turbine, through the hose and all the way to the gun, this HVLP system is built with rugged quality and ease-of-use in mind.
Item #
56153
Rating:
88% of 100

Designed for experienced woodworkers, small paint or finishing shops and even professionals on the jobsite, the Earlex HV6003PUS SprayPort Sprayer lets you spray a showroom-quality finish in record time. The 6003 turbine is a step up in power and performance over the 6002 and lower models, boasting a 1200W 3-stage turbine that's capable of quickly atomizing thin and thicker coatings. Included is the comfortably streamlined Pro-8™ Gun, built from lightweight die-cast aluminum. The Pro-8 offers excellent atomization, flexible, easily accessible controls, easy breakdown for maintenance and clean up, and great durability. Last but not least, the hose, an often neglected component of HVLP sprayers, leaves nothing to be desired. It has quick-connect functionality, is extremely lightweight, flexible and so crush-resistant that you can stand on it.

Features:
  • Compact, portable turbine cabinet with carrying handle.
  • Pull-out hanger bracket lets you conveniently hang your gun during a pause from spraying.
  • 360° rotating air cap at the front of the gun allows complete flexibility in spray angle from horizontal to vertical and everything in between.
  • Pattern control dial on the Pro-8™ spray gun is conveniently placed at the rear, letting you easily change the spray pattern without needing to adjust the air cap.
  • Pattern control can be set to round for intricate detail work or an elliptical fan shape, which widens as you adjust the pattern adjuster.
  • Capability to spray thin to thick bodied materials un-thinned.
  • 2-stage, 2-finger trigger maximizes coating control, ideal for feathering effects.
  • Easy clean up, since only the spray gun and cup contact the coating material.
  • Dual reticulated open cell air filters provide improved airflow and longer turbine life.
  • 25' HyperFlex™ hose is lightweight, crush-resistant and extremely flexible.

Excellent
Just got the sprayer. I have never used one before, but have watched lots of videos and read many reviews. I was up and running in a few minutes. Setup and cleaning is very simple (watch the videos on the Earlex website). I sprayed thinned latex, with maybe 5–10% water (just guessed). The finish was excellent. One of the best purchases I have made in a while. Love it!!!!

Super impressed!
This thing is a beast ! Pics posted of my first spray and I couldn’t be happier, cleans with ease, included a 2.5mm nozzle combo bonus!
Powerful quiet and efficient. Spray pattern dials in with ease and this was or is one of my best purchases yet, especially coming from the ad3000 and the Fuji spraypro2

Great Sprayer
This sprayer is awesome. Cheaper than a Fugi and works just as well. I've used it to spray latex paint, clear water based poly, and pigmented lacquer. I purchased the siphon fed gun with the turbine and I recently purchased a gravity fed gun as well. I plan to use one gun for water based finishes and the other for oils/lacquers.

Good quality
I decided to look at sprayers after spending 4 hours brushing the first coat of poly on a desk I had made. I read multiple reviews and after looking at choices at Rockler, I decided on the Earlex. The selling points were the 3 phase turbine as well as better quality then the other sprayers I had looked at. I would rather spend more knowing I will be able to use it longer and with material other than poly. I have put three more coats of poly on the desk and 4 on a file cabinet I made. It has been a huge time saver. The coats have been even after making adjustments to the gun, the air hose is long enough to be able to keep the motor away from the project and the gun seems well made. So far with poly it's worked great. I hope it will work as well with paint since it came with a wide spray needle kit as well. I wish it would have come with a cleaning kit but that is not effecting my rating. Again, I've only used it for water based poly but it has worked great.

Woodworking game changer
Highly recommend the Earlex HV6003 HVLP SprayPort Sprayer!!! I did a lot of research before investing in this sprayer, and I am extremely happy with its performance. This sprayer is turnkey out of the box, sprays smooth and consistent with a nice wide pattern and minimal overspray, takes no time to set up and take down, and the gun is very easy and quick to adjust and to clean. I have been woodworking for decades and had been using an HVLP gun with a compressor to spray lacquer on my larger projects. It was often too time consuming to set it up and get the right pressure and viscosity to use on smaller jobs though, so I resorted to the multi day urethane route. With this sprayer, that is no longer the case. I can use this on large projects as well as on small projects with ease, because it is so quick and easy to set up and take down. Whether you are a furniture hobbiest like me or build larger scale projects every week, this sprayer will do the job.

Earlex 6003
Being a newly retired carpenter my next adventure is putting a shop together for fine woodworking. I have installed osb on the walls and wanted to laquer them. Thus the purchase. With virtually no spraying experience the 6003 performed flawlessly and I moved around the shop in about an hour. Three coats later it looks nice. Not sure why it comes with a viscosity cup since the claim is that products don't need to be thinned. All I can say is it didn't have any problem with laquer.
I could barely get the spay gun top off the cup since the ears on the top almost wouldn't clear the nibs on the cup. Tech support said "it would loosen over time". That's fine, but in the meantime I'm going to spill product wrestling with it. The solution was easy, I used a mill file on the ears, (Just a couple passes), which allowed them to slide under the nibs.
Super easy clean up, I won't hesitate to use this for everything. Now what can I paint.

First Impressions
Upgraded from the 5500 to the 6003. The power difference was impressive. Unit came bundled with the 2.5mm Needle and the Wide Spray cap - a nice surprise as it was not listed in the original "what's included listing".
Spraying latex with relative ease.
One issue was the check valve & tubes (key # 13 on parts list). The manual did not describe the direction of the check valve. Confirmed with Earlex CS that the valve with the arrow side faces towards the cup.
Outside of that little annoyance, I am very pleased with this unit.

The positive reviews

I talked to several pro's regarding spraying polyurethane on fine furniture. Lacquers, especially Pre-cat provide a sturdy finish in a home setting. I have a large office conference table to finish and I don't want brush strokes to be apparent. It sounds like this sprayer is what I need.

Does this unit atomize water-based latex paints and leave a smooth finish?
A shopper on Aug 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I painted my cabinets with Benjamin Moor's "Advance" enamel paint. The paint was quite thick. I added about 1/8 cup of water and used 2.5 mm nozzle. It did a great job. Resently sprayed my walls with Glidden's diamond paint in semi-gloss without thining, using 2.5 mm nozzle and it did really good job.
What is the viscosity rating for the Earlex 6003?
Dave C on Jan 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Dave, Thanks for contacting us with your question. The 6003 does not have a viscosity rating as it is powerful enough to spray un-thinned latex paint.
Does it come with two needles? 1.3mm and 2.5mm ???
J G on Mar 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Mine came with both. I also bought a 1.6mm needle as well. I can spray anything with this unit now!
Is this system appropriate for spraying polyurethane wood finishes?
Jacob H on Jun 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have used this HVLP on my first project which is a complete kitchen make over. I'm doing all cabinet work and the finish is Latex Dunn Edwards semi gloss with primer subcoat. I purchased the 6303 for the three stage turbine. I talked to the Earlex HVLP hot line customer service regarding some questions. The sprayer worked beyond our expect ions. Easy to use as a first timer, used both in a spray booth that I set up in my garage and as a touch up application in my kitchen. It applied the paint through a 1.3 mm spray nozzle with no issues. The finish was a professional grade flawless smooth finish. I'm really happy. I do not think the poly fish will be a challenge. Call the Earlex guys for other questions, everything was helpful and spot on.
Will the "Earlex HV6003PUS HVLP SprayPort" spray oil base enamel paint straight out of the can without thinning? I do not like to thin house paint for it changes the characteristic of the paint. If so which nozzle is recommended?
Gary on Mar 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Gary - It will spray most paints right out of the can, but the quality of atomization changes dramatically with just a little thinning. 5% or about 2oz of mineral spirits does not affect the quality or properties of the paint, but it sprays a lot better. If you want a fine finish use the 1mm, the 1.3mm or the 1.5mm.
Are different tips available for spraying different materials?
Bill J on Feb 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There are 7 needle kits available for the 6003. Starting at .8mm all the way up to our 2.5mm wide spray with a 30% wider pattern. The gun comes with the 1.3mm in it already, so you're ready for fine finishing right out of the box.

Can a person spray automotive urethane paint / single stage non metallic with this set up?
Dale D on Oct 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I think you can. I don't think automotive urethane is very thick at all. I sprayed latex a couple of days ago from Home Depot, cut the quart with water as suggested. The finish dried perfectly and was professional.
Would this sprayer be suited for spraying lacquer on guitars and other stringed instruments?
Bill W on Feb 7, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Bill, we have used this sprayer on many projects both large and small using a wide variety of finishes including lacquer. It gives us complete control of the finish. This is the best sprayer we own and has been our best investment.
Will the 1.3 mm nozzle set that comes with the earlex hv6003pus hvlp sprayport spray lacquer? Or do I need to order something different?
Gary C on Jul 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Lacquer should have no problem with this machine as long as you thin it properly refer to the product data sheet of what it suggests do not use brush on Lacquer. A product I like to use with you Sherwood catalyzed Hi build & thin about 25% with Lacquer thinner
Is this an "always on" or "on demand" turbine?
Dan E on Oct 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Do you mean "Bleeder" and "Non Bleeder"? This is a non-bleeder gun. All turbines bleed, it depends where they bleed from that makes the difference. Bleeder means that air is coming out of the gun nozzle at all times it is running. Non-Bleeder means that it bleeds internally, not at the gun.
Trying to spray an acrylic enamel paint that requires 2000 psi as per the data sheet. Can this unit handle it at only 5.5 psi? The product does not recommend reduction. Tip size 2.5mm
Heath W on Apr 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: As far as I know, 2000psi is only available from an airless sprayer. The Earlex is HVLP. I have applied a variety of oil and waterborne paints with excellent results. I have only used airless with waterborne latex. The Earlex air and fluid application rates are easy to adjust so overspray is minimized, coverage is good without running or curtains. Moisture in the air is not a problem since it has not gone through a standard compressor and a moisture separator or desicant trap are not needed.

Hope this is helpful.
How is sound level of this unit? Compared to 5500?
Lloyd on Nov 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The sound level is not too bad. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner. It uses a lot of air. It has two filters on the sides and need cleaning often. In the summer time I put the machine outside. In the winter I put it in a closet in my shop to cut down on dirty air getting sucked in. The filters do work good and clean out easily. It works great for poly finishes. DO NOT USE IT FOR PAINT!!!!! I tried, and it just spits it out, even with the bigger spray tip! The little tube that pressures the cup has a check valve that fails. Order extras of these from Earlex. They are cheap.
Just received a new HV6003 and have held up several projects to use on. In the package is a small black funnel like object, also shown in the description. Is this a part of the cleaning parts? It is not shown or described in the material anywhere. Thanks for anyone taking time to respond.
Gary B on May 31, 2020
BEST ANSWER: That's the viscosity cup, called a Ford #4. It's for measuring the thickness of a fluid. While not a requirement of spraying, it can help you figure out the relative thickness of material when preparing to spray it. Contact Earlex tech support for more viscosity information at https://www.earlex.com/support/contact-us/
I own the 5500 unit can I upgrade to 6003 with a 6003 gun and hose attached to 5500 turbine?
Stephen J on May 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: No, the hose connection on the 5500 and 6003 are different. You would need to purchase the complete 6003 unit. Also the turbine output is matched to the gun.
How do I order the check valve and tubes?
Ken W on Oct 16, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have not had to replace any parts on mine, yet. I suppose that I would call Rockler parts dept and see if they can help. If that doesn't work, I would try to contact Earlex if possible. Steve B.
Can this unit spray gelcoat?
Thomas S on Feb 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The Spray Port 6003 will do a great job with Gelcoat. It may not require thinning, but it may require a larger needle than the 1.3mm that comes with the gun. There are 7 needle sizes available .08mm up to 2.5mm wide spray! Call us to help you determine which would work best - 888-783-2612.
can it be sold in 220v 50 HZ??
carlosA v on Jan 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi I own the 6003 120V version. Nothing on the unit or in the specs list 220V capability. Everything lists 120V only.
only use my spayer twice now it only puts out air it won't spray even water?
paul t on Sep 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The check valve is clogged. The plastic tubing running from the sprayer handle to the canister hold the check valve in the middle. This keeps the pressure in the cup and prevents paint flowing from the pressure cup back up into the handle. It must be thoroughly cleaned after each use or it will clog and prevent air from pressurizing the cup. Chances are you will have to replace the check valve. Call Earlex at their 800 number, and talk to a service rep. They sell a 3 pack of check valves for about $10. The best way to make sure the check vale is clean is to take a hose and force water into the air fitting while pressing the trigger. This will force water through the check valve and clean it out very thoroughly. The Sprayport is a great sprayer (I use mine for cabinets), but you must make sure it is thoroughly cleaned.
Which tips are included during this sale?
Ted K on Nov 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The 1.3mm is always included in the gun. We also have the 2.5mm wide spray included with this kit. There are 5 other needles sizes available from .08mm and up.
Will this pressure feed unit spray lacquer sideways or up side down with no problems.?
Gary C on Jul 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Like most cup guns it has an adjustment that turns the spray fan sideways, so there is no need to tilt the gun sideways. Our air cap actually rotates 360 degrees so the fan can be anywhere you want. As for upside down, there are very few applications where it might be necessary, but if that is something you do a lot, you should look into 3M's PPS system. Change out the Earlex cup for the 3M cup and spray in any condition, direction or location. Earlex technical support can also be reached at 888-783-2612.
For this sprayer, is the 1.3mm tip best for lacquers?
David B on Feb 3, 2016

Can the warped 6003 spray contact cement ?
Stephan on Jan 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: There are some coatings contact cement can't be spray and can be spray. We need more information on a specific coating of the contact cement you are trying to spray. Please give us a call at 1-800-328-8251, we will able to assist you.
How is the overspray compared to conventional siphon guns? Does every thing in the shop have to be covered?
Paul H on May 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: A traditional air compressor and cup gun would operate at about 35 psi and would loose 40% to overspray. The 6003 operates at 5.5 psi and will loose less than 10% to overspray. So, obviously there still is some and it needs to be addressed. But it also won't spread as far and most HVLP overspray that is more than about 5' from the sprayer is already dry so it doesn't tend to stick when it lands. Spraying is all about preparation. Tape and drape, drop cloths and shields are all a part of the finishers/painters arsenal and have real use. Protect yourself first and your shop second. But do protect things that need to be. For more specific tips and tricks call our technical support at 888-783-2612.
