Woodworking Experience:
Awesome tool.
Bought this based on reviews and I have nothing of this type to compare it to but this sprayer worked wonderful for what I was needing. It’s much more controllable than my airless sprayer which means you waste way less paint. I’ve sprayed general finished milk paint and some oil based polyurethane and it worked great. I watched the video twice and the machine is super easy to clean and set up. Great piece of equipment.

Great hvlp sprayer
My wife bought this for me for my Bday, so I can finish her new dining room table. Just used my new 5500 for the first time. It is a game changer! I’ve been using a hplv gravity feed ran off my compressor and the difference is night and day.

It took me about four times using it and watching some YouTube videos to get it right. I was afraid to apply enough paint. Once I got it down, though, the Earlex 5500 does an outstanding job. My wife is thrilled with the look of our new kitchen cabinets that I'm spray painting. Couldn't be happier.

Earlex Spray Station
After watching the instructional video setup and spraying was quite easy. Used much less paint than my older compressed air system ( more efficient). Cleanup is a breeze after using water born products but oil base is still a pain. All in all I am pleased with the machine.

Can u use Earlex 5500 to paint autos ?
Mike C on Apr 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It can, but you will need the finer nozzle set - 1.0 and be very careful with viscosity to prevent runs. Some experimenting needed with your paint.
Will this sprayer spray oil base stain?
goodstuff on Jun 5, 2015
Will the Earlex Spray Station 5500 handle interior acrylic paint products with only minor thinning?
A shopper on Jun 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The Earlex 5500 will spray most any coating but they need to be thinned to a minimum of 16 seconds. Earlex supplies a measure cup that allows you to fill with paint and time how long it takes to empty. If it empties in 16 seconds or less spray away.
Will this handle WATCO 63041 Brushing Lacquer?
Pullhook on May 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: yes, it will spray brushing lacquer. I had to use a light coat, but it came out fine. hope that helps.
Can this sprayer be used out side to pint a garage door, or house exterior siding?
Wayne P on Dec 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, of course. I use mine in my garage but have used one to stain a deck and pergola. Very versatile tool. Having the correct needle/tip is key.
Can this sprayers be used to paint interior walls. Is a mask necessary and is there much drift?
Geri S on Apr 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Well that's tough to answer. Can it? Maybe. Should it? No. The viscosity of interior wall paint is way too heavy to use this sprayer without significant dilution. And most wall paints should not be thinned. You need a pressurized system to paint walls. You can spray some Alkyd paints which are good for baseboards and trim - but again it must be thin enough to pass through a #4 Ford cup within 160 seconds. Benjamin Moore's Advance can be sprayed with this sprayer.

In my experience this sprayer is best used for shellac, lacquer and water based finishes (i.e. W/B poly).

Hope this helps, Joel
Tech details list cord length at 5.5 ft; Overview says 13ft. Which is correct???
John P on May 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The correct length for the power cord is 5.5 feet.
The model number is HV5500US2. Does this come with the cleaning kit and viscosity cup? These do not appear to be listed but usually are included with Earlex products.
HandyGuy on Jul 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: yes, it comes with lots of brushes and a viscosity cup. you might want to add the 1.0 needle if you plan to get a really good finish. the needles that come with the kit are good, but splatter a little too much.
I wonder if the question about overspray was asking, is this technically an airless sprayer, or does the unit contain a compressor to provide air pressure for painting?
edward b on Nov 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No this is not an airless sprayer. It has it's own turban compressor. The HVLP puts more material on the work at lower pressure which cuts down on overspray, but doesn't eliminate overspray completely. Hope this in helpful.
Will this sprayer spray oil based paint?
Gayle J on Oct 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, while the majority of the spraying I have done to date has been with a Benjamin Moore latex alkyd the results have been very good and I am most satisfied with the purchase. I looked at numerous options before purchasing this unit and spoke with several contractors that were familiar with similar products. You might need to purchase some Floral which can be found at Home Depot or you might just adjust with thinner. Your results should be excellent but I would recommend practicing on a large piece of cardboard prior to spraying to get the feel and to adjust the volume and spray pattern. Enjoy
will this unit spray latex paint on vinyl siding & hold up in all weather conditions ?
I need to paint my vinyl siding on my house & metal siding on my pole barn.
KENNETH B on May 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It could but would take way too long. This is a smaller more precise guy for fine finishing. Go get you a Graco airless with a 515 tip.
what material can i spray with a 1.5 mm needle set?
Shawn p on Nov 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The 1.5 is your fine finish needle set (furniture, cabinetry). Generally when you want to get a fine finish in 3-6 coats, the 1.5 should atomize properly for you. It can be stain, lacquer, poly or oil based paint or thinned latex paint.
How does the #56405 compare to the old model (#61577), which I believe was rated 1000 watts? And to its bigger brother, the Earlex 5500? Looking to spray latex primer and enamel on interior cabinets and trim. Also being able to do larger areas (exterior doors, walls) would be a nice bonus.

BEST ANSWER: I don't have the experience with older model, what I can say is that Earlex 5500 current model has performed with flaw. Oil or water paints using thinning guide provided by Earlex. Smooth finish easy clean up. Definitely recommend!
I am not getting a smooth finish coat. I have tried all three needle sizes. The spray is not atomizing small enough particles of paint to create a smooth finish. Do I need to thin the liquid even more?
Wes M on Oct 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don't' know what you are spraying so I'll be general. With latex paint, thin it 10% with water. Water is the only thinner for anything water based. For a nicer finish also add Floetrol to help it level. Use the 2.0 or 1.5mm needle set, depending on how thick you apply the coating. The bigger the needle, the thicker the application. With any proper wood finish such as stain, polyurethane, lacquer, etc. use the 1.5mm needle set, thin if required (usually not much) 5-10% with the proper thinner. Adjust the sprayer for maximum flow with minimum spitting. Spitting is the result of having too much fluid in the airflow. The knob on the back of the spray gun controls fluid flow. Then, spray from 6" away from the project and apply a wet coat with each pass. Lay the project down (if you can) so that gravity helps too!
What needle should I use for water-based poly? Seems like 1.5 or 1.0mm. Plan to use the guns almost exclusively for poly and it seems like that may be the ideal material to spray. Thoughts?
Mark O on Mar 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: 1.5mm is the optimal fine finish needle if you want to be done in 3 or 4 coats. When you go down to the 1.0 you may want to apply 10 or more coats, like musical instruments.
Alkyd paints? Will it work?
Tito_ on Jan 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It will. The paint may require some thinning, perhaps 10% with water for water based paints and 5% mineral spirits for oil based paints. Never thin paint more than 20%.
I am considering using this to spray enamel on plantation shudders. Will this work well?
Jim K on Sep 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It will work perfectly, using the 1.5mm fluid tip/needle set. Thin your paint about 5-10% and spray from 6" away from the project.
Is this a "bleeder" or a "non-bleeder" spray gun ? This means, does air flow through the sprayer at all times while turned on, or only when the handle is pulled back to release fluid ?
Paul R on Jun 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The 5500 is a bleeder style gun, meaning that air flows from the gun once the turbine is turned on. Pull the trigger to add fluid to the air flow. If you prefer a non-bleeder, look at our HV6003 Spray Port with the Pro8 gun! You're always welcome to contact technical support at 888-783-2612.
Will the Earlex 5500 system spray marine enamels?
Lou B on Oct 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I used mine to spray automotive enamel and I was really surprised how well it came out. I used one part thinner to two parts paint and it went on smoothly. good luck.
I have devilbliss hvlp spray guns will this compressor operate my guns too?
sherwood l on Jul 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No idea other than to contact Earlex customer service and ask.

Good question.
Is there an extension hose available?
bill b on Oct 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Not that I'm aware of right now. I find that the hose is plenty long enough and use an extension cord if I need to move the base unit.
