General Finishes Enduro-Var Water Based Urethane Top Coast Satin

Bringing you the best of both water- and oil-based finishes, this advanced self-crosslinking topcoat combines the easy cleanup and fast dry times of a water-based finish with the warm amber hue of an oil-based finish. Its air-oxidizing curing process makes it extremely rugged, plenty strong for even hardwood floors. It is VOC-compliant, low-odor, non-flammable and cleans up with soap and water. Dries tack-free in only 10-30 minutes and can be recoated in 2-4 hours. Brush, roll or spray on. Available in Satin, Semi-Gloss or Gloss. Enduro-Var is self sealing. Do not use over other sealers or topcoats without consulting with General Finishes for compatibility: www.generalfinishes.com.

Features:

  • Slight amber hue looks more like an oil-based varnish than a water-based finish.
  • Very durable.
  • Highly water resistant.
  • Can be used over most water-based and solvent-based stains.
  • Dries tack-free in 10-30 minutes.

It just glows.
I used this to refinish the wood windows in the house. They just glow, maybe gleam is the right word. They just gorgeous, probably look better than when they were new. It's been a huge project (15 double hung windows & frames) but I am so glad I spent the extra dollars on this stuff.

I used it over a well dried oil stain (I couldn't find a water based stain the right color). It, unlike the stain ;-), dries quickly enough, that each window has ~5 coats on it. With the hardware cleaned up, 50 year old windows are lovely.

My new go-to finish
Virtually no odor, dries super fast, builds to a beautiful warm finish. Dries to the touch within 30 minutes, recoatable after 2 hours, so you can easily build a finish in an afternoon. Really comes alive after 3 coats, which tempts you to just keep going.

Only downside is it should only be applied to raw wood or stain/dye, so an undercoat of shellac might be a gamble. There's no noticeable blotch, though, so shellac shouldn't be necessary.

Worked great for me
I have very little experience in wood finishing. I used this product on an antique factory card that I restored into a coffee table. I researched numerous products online for quite some time and came across Enduro-Var in a YouTube video. It turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. It went on easily with a brush, brought out the beautiful grain of the antique wood, saw marks, and other imperfections. It ever so slightly brought out an amber color in the wood. I am super pleased with this product. I did three coats with light sanding in between. Clean up was simple.

Cabinet refresh
Actually, my wife used this finish to perform a refresh of our old cabinets while I changed out all the cabinet hardware. She loved the ease of application and the results. We both agree that the cabinets look better than when they were new.

I read about this product from another supplied and wanted to give it a try. The other supplier did not offer free shipping so if I like the way it turns out I'll be ordering another gallon from Rockler.

I can spray this by an open door with just a house fan under the panels. Beautiful finish and cleans up with water. This and a HVLP system is the way to go.

It's cross-link technology (air dries) to a hard finish suitable for even floors. I like the warmth of the slight amber hue when dry. Easy to work with. A quality product!

Can I use this for a staircase, as a topcoat/sealer?
recci on Oct 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I mainly use it on my cabinets, counter tops and such. But is very durable I do not not see why not. When we do our floors and stairs I was going to use it a my top coat. But mainly because of low odor and quick drying time.
Is this finish durable for wood flooring?
Teresa M on Dec 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I won’t use this finish for wood floor. It’s a more adapted for furniture. It will create a thin film every time you apply it. For flooring you will prefer a finish with fewer coats.
I am finishing a Live Edge Walnut mantel for above my masonry fireplace. Will this withstand the heat?
Steven H on Nov 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I'd give it a shot on a mantel. I used it on an oak dining room table, and two years later, the finish looks perfect. We generally use hot pads for the hot dishes, but sometimes it's just a dish towel, and sometimes someone forgets altogether. No problems. It's pretty impressive stuff.
Can I use this over shellac on a violin for an Amber finish?
Calvin M on Mar 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is one of very few finishes that cannot be applied over shellac. It also has it's own amber hue already as it is not a "water white" finish. If you'd like more amber than what this finish provides out of the can, you can apply a base coat of an amber-toned water-based aniline dye
Clear finish over paint?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The directions on the can clearly state that it only will adhere well to raw sanded wood, dyed or water based stained wood. It does not recommed applying over sanding sealers or shellac. I have used it over oil based stains with success by following the directions to let the stain dry for several days. This is an expensive finish and with other clear finishes that can be applied over paint, I would not recommend it.
What finish should I use over milk paint that won’t yellow?
Machelle on Nov 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: THIS FINISH WILL NOT TURN YELLOW WITH AGE BUT IT DOES HAVE A AMBER TINT BUILT INTO IF YOU A CLEAR FINISH USE THE OTHER GF POLYS.
Would you use this over the general finishes gel stain? I’m refinishing my kitchen cabinets, which I believe are cherry wood. The new drawer boxes are poplar with Baltic birch bottoms and I plan to use just this topcoat on them/no stain. Will these products yield good results for my project?
Austin S on Oct 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: As per the General Finishes website (I would have included a link here but the Rockler instructions say not to do that), EnduroVar is only recommended for use as a top coat over water stains, dye stains, and raw wood. I believe that GF gel stains are NOT water based, so it should not be used in that way. GF does however offer water based stains. All that said, this is a great product and produces really nice results. Recently I've been applying it in several (5-9) very thin coats by applying it with a brush or cloth then immediately wiping off all the excess with a clean cloth (sanding in between coats with 400 or greater sand paper). It takes more time and 'wastes' a lot of product but produces a really nice finish. EnduroVar also produces a really nice finish when applied with an HVLP sprayer, which may be more appropriate for a big job like kitchen cabinets.
would this be a good product to use with wormy maple?
Mike S on Jul 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I'd say it is a good product to use with any wood. If you are using it on coarse-grained wood such as oak, and you'd like the grain filled in, I'd suggest two or more coats of General Finishes Enduro Sanding Sealer, with light sanding between coats until the grain is filled in. Spraying provides the best finish.
2 questions:
Is this finish appropriate for a bothroom vanity? i.e. Is it water proof or very water resistant? It will be applied to the front and side of the vanity.
I plan to stain the walnut with Watco? Can this be applied over the top if I wait 2-4 days?

BEST ANSWER: Yes to both
I've applied one coat of Minwax Spar Urethane to bare wood. Can I apply Enduro Var over the Spar Urethane without any problems?
Jim K on Aug 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't think so. The finish is designed for bare wood or water based stain. I have put it over oil based stain and a thin shellac sealer without problem but I would not recommend it over a spar urethane.
What do you recommend for new mahogany doors that will keep the natural color of the wood?
ed g on Jun 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If you want a water clear finish then Enduro-Var is not the one. Although a great finish, it does have an amber tint to it. If you are spraying, I would recommend another GF finish that I have had great success with, Enduro. It is water clear but it is also made for spraying.

Good luck on your decision.
I have used Endurovar on many wood carvings and unfinished table tops with good results. I'm considering applying it to an oak floor that has the original stain finish. The surface is in good condition with no major marks or flaws, but the original surface needs to be renewed. I don't know what if the original finish was poly or another carrier. I don't want to resand the entire floor before applying the water based urethane?
A shopper on Jul 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I used Endurovar on wood I stained with an oil based stain. I let the stain dry for 48 hours and had no difficulty in applying the Endurovar. As you know it dries fast and can be quickly recoated. However, I would not recommend applying it over oil base polyurethane. In our area, wood floors are usually finished with oil base poly. I would test a small area with solvents to determine which finish you have on your floors and either recoat with the same type of poly or sand the floor and start over with Endurovar.
