Hidden Control Arms for Shutter System

Get the clearest possible view from your louvered shutters by building them with hidden control arms instead of the traditional center-mounted control arms. These thin metal strips mount to the ends of the louvers, tucked neatly out of sight for maximum visibility when the louvers are opened. Made of stainless steel so it's unaffected by window condensation and moisture. Works in tandem with our Hidden Control Arm Jig and Rockler Shutter System Templates Create louvered, moveable shutters with a clear, unobstructed view out of your windows. To install, drill 1.2mm pilot holes in the ends of the louvers, then drive Stainless Steel Nails (#45400, sold separately).

Worked great!
For something so simple they work really well. Make sure you install them with rounded corner away from the edge.

Impressed
I was impressed with the design and ease of use ... made construction of my shutters much easier ... prior to buying these control arms I had tried to manufacture them as there was no suitable product available in Australia. Thank you.

Overall good product
I had to file down all the edges because it was so rough. I also had to use weights in order to get the thing to lay flat enough so it could be installed.

Made my first set of shutters using the hidden control arm. Came out beautiful. Now making 4 more sets for adjoining rooms. I think I will wind up doing all 18 windows in the house over time. This setup is great and allows maximum light without anything blocking your view.

Makes the shutters look so much cleaner without the external control rod. A little pricey, but worth it.

works better then the standard control arm and the little pin clips that always pull out of the louver.

Rockler is going down hill fast their product quality is getting to be very poor. Service is poor and good luck getting delivery. Throw the bones and see what happens.

Works great and I like the look of the shutters with the hidden control arm instead of the traditional arm on the front.

I am using 2 1/2" shutters and spacing them at 2 1/4" on centers (in order to achieve a 1/4" overlap). Will the control arm for the 2 1/2" w shutters work for this setup? What is the on-center spacing for the holes in the control arm? One of the previous participants stated that the shutter spacing should be 2 1/2" which to me doesn't make since as it would not allow any overlap..or am I mixed up on my thinking?
Bud W on Jan 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I did not use the 2 1/2 inch shutter, but I will explain what I used. My shutters were the 3 1/2 inch louvers, with the hidden control arm for 3 1/2 inch louvers. The actual spacing of the louvers in the stiles was 3 inches, which matched the control arm centering, allowing the louvers to open on center. The overlap on mine was from the 3 inch on center, with 3 1/2 inch wide louvers.
For the 2 1/2 inch louvers, the spacing on the stile should be 2 inches, and the hidden control arm for 2 1/2 inch louvers will match it. This will automatically give you the louvers overlap. Hope this helps, Mike
If I use the hidden control arm for 2.5 inch louvres does that mean the louvres have to be 2.5 inches apart? Which is the determining distance - or are they both critical?
Tim G on Mar 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: To answer the first question the louvers are 2.0 inches a part. There is an over lap of 0.25 of an inches on top and bottom. The control arm holes are also 2.0 inches apart , with the hole being elongated to 0.125 of an inch to accommodate for measurement error.
For the second question, if you use the 2.5 inch louver template set, the gig sets the distance between louvers the 2.0 inches needed for the control arm. I believe the louver distance is the critical component of the system. The hole for the control arm is set back 0.25 of an inch from the edge of the louver.
How much extra clearance will be required between the shutters and the window if I use the hidden control arm? Without the arm the minimum clearance is 11/16".
Ron F on Apr 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The clearance of 1/16" is still the same. The hidden control arm attaches to the end of the louver and that is where you will need to cut a rabbet 3/32" wide (just the width of a thin kerf blade) by 7/16" deep. That will provide the clearance you need. If you are using a mid-rail, then you will also need to cut a rabbet 1/4"X1/4" in that to give the hidden control arm room to nest when fully closed.
Happy Woodworking!
I want to make 72” tall shutters. Can the hidden control arms be stacked or linked together?
M J on Sep 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don't think they would work evenly from top to bottom. But you really should install one rail in the middle for stability. The two sections will be within the span of a single control arm. I made 4 sets of these for our home that are just over 72" and they look and work fine. BTW, glue the three rails to one side with the other side doweled but not glued. Next day, install slats and glue that side. Good luck!
how do you install the hidden control arms? I am planning to attach the arms on the outer side (not hinge side) of the shutter and the slats angled upward as you face the front of the shutter. Is this correct or do I have something reversed? Please advise.
Peter S on May 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Peter! Don’t know if I fully understand your question, but the hidden control metal strip must always be mounted on the back side of shutter. Doesn’t really matter whether the strip is mounted on the left or right side of each louvre. My preference is to mount it on the hinge side of the shutter. This keeps that mechanism well out of the way when you open up the full shutter from the window. The control metal strips are available from Rockler. Hope this helps??
My pins keep on coming off the control arm can I use this system on preexisting shutters?
Donna E on Feb 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If you can remove the shutters to access the louvers I would think it is possible. The spacing of the arm holes would also need to match what you have now. I believe the holes are spaced 3"
what is the distance of the holes on the 3.5 inch hidden arm piece?
Dennis on Jul 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It is 3 inches. This allows for a 1/4" overlap at the top and bottom of each louver.
