Incra® HingeCrafter

Item #
94% of 100
Shape and cut wooden hinges that look just like the metal version - ideal for everything from jewelry boxes to cabinets. Just combine your #25971 Incra Jig positioner or #24981 Incra Lead Screw 17" Fence System with the HingeCrafter drill guide and the results will be beautiful wood hinges ready to glue right into your project. Easily make four hinge barrel diameters: 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4". The two smaller sizes are ideal for horizontal applications like jewelry boxes and humidors, while the two larger sizes are perfect for vertical hinge applications such as cabinet doors.

  • Make any hinge length up to 10-1/2" with the included drill bit; your only limit is twice the useable length of your drill bit
  • Kit includes HingeCrafter with drill guide bushings already installed, instructions and drill bit
  • Just add the straight bit and round-over cutters for your choice of barrel diameter

I've made wooden hinges before..the HingCrafter takes the hard part out of the equation (lining up the holes for the pin.) I just wish I had it sooner.

Wish this would have been around 20 years ago when I started my hobby. I have made 14” hinges to 2” hinges with this and it turned out perfect. If your blanks are done correctly you will love this.

I have only begun to use it. I wish the templates that they refer to were part of the deal. I have one of the original Incra Fence's. There are a LOT of templates in the sets I have but not the ones mentioned in the instructions. I may have to experiment and use a stand in template(s).

Double hung wooden hinge?
I purchased this hinge for the sole purpose of crafting doors for a footlocker/crafting box I am planning/building for my youngest daughter's high school graduation. I plan on having the doors hinge horizontally and flat to ends of the box. To do this, the hinges have to be double hung. But, I want the hinges to stop at 90 degrees in the "closed" position, so I could only use the HingeCrafter for half of the pieces as half of them had only half-round and did not fit the jig. Previously drilled sections were used to drill these pieces. Concept proven, now to craft the actual box pieces!
270 degree rotation afforded by double hinge!
Inside of the double-hung hinge, note the square "stops" to prevent over rotation of the hinge.
Top view of the concept proof project.
Incra HingeCrafter was useful for only half of the drilling, as half were half square.

Hinge Crafter
The Hinge crafter is a good jig and is well made. Does the job well. Take your time for best results. Get in a hurry and you will have a mess.

I use the Incra iBox and dado stack to make the fingers for the hinges (rather than a router bit). While I can get very accurate finger joints, I have found it very difficult to get the registration between the iBox and the Hingecrafter to match. That is, the width of the fingers and the width of the slots created on the iBox are not necessarily the same as those set on Hingecrafter. If there is even a few thousandths of a inch difference, it causes progressive errors that can throw the last set of hinge knuckles off by enough that it won't fit in the Hingecrafter. I have found I can shim my dado stack and adjust the spacing on the iBox but it requires many failed sets of hinges before I get one that will fit. As the iBox instructions say, it nearly requires a degree in higher mathematics to work this out. What am I missing?

BEST ANSWER: I also had this problem but what I found out is if you have a 3/4 blank and use a 3/4 bullnose bit trying not to leave a shoulder your knuckle is now only 5/8 and that throws off everything. I started using bullnose that was a 1/8 bigger than wood I was using and made sure my blanks were 6” x 6” and I have made 14” x 6” hinges with success.
does it come with the router bits ?
arnold w on May 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No it does not, and that is the only problem because of the cost of the of the bull nose bits! You need four different sizes for a complete set! I hope this helps!
Do you need Solid pieces of wood or can you glue pieces together to make longer Hinges ?
Henry on Oct 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You should use a solid pieces of wood for the best results.
How strong are the hinges? Can wood hinges really hold up a cabinet door or something heavy as well as a metal hinge?
Terry V on Apr 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The strength of the wooden hinges depends on the type of wood and the wood grain.
The answers to previous questions indicate you need to buy 4 different router bits. What are the types and sizes for the complete set? Thanks!
Mike R on Dec 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: There are 3 different sizes of hinges ( 1/4, 3/8, 1/2) that can be made with this jig. maybe I got 2 of the 1/4-inch size, the one that I will mostly use.
