Instructions and plans for heirloom toys that delight children and teach essential skills. The difference between a good toy and a great one is its ability to entertain -- and instruct -- a child at the same time. In Making Toys that Teach, Les Neufield combines his skills as an educator and woodworker to show you which toys are most effective for early childhood education and gives you all the information you need to build the toys yourself.

There are nine fun projects -- from Pattern Blocks and Dominoes to a Puzzle Train -- that will get little ones learning without them even realizing it. Kids will learn basic motor skills, color matching, organizing by size and shape and problem solving. Step-by-step instructions and detailed photos make it easy for you build the toys.

I have soon to be four...
I have soon to be four grandchildren and I love making toys for them. This book will come in handy. I think there are far too many toys that do one thing and are boring after that. The projects in this book can be used in many ways. I only wish there were a few more projects within the book.

This book is a wonderful addition...
This book is a wonderful addition to any woodworkers library. It is more geared to the beginer but has level of creativity that will apeel to the advanced. Great projects for the children to enjoy. I only wish that it had a hundred more. Highly recomended.

Play, for small children, can help their minds and motor skills to develop, especially if their toys require active manipulation.

I liked the assortment of toys featured in this book.
