Maple by the Piece-1/4" Thickness

Item #

Rating:
92% of 100
The classic American blonde, Hard Maple features creamy white sapwood with a reddish cast, and rugged durability. The wood has an exceptionally fine, even texture, and tight pores that yield an excellent finished surface. These thin boards are machined S4S to 1/8" and 1/4" thicknesses, eliminating wear and tear on your planer. You won't have to worry about chipout, which is difficult to prevent when planing thin stock. Thin boards are ideal for edging, veneering, inlay, marquetry, sides for decorative boxes, bending stock, bent laminations and whatever else your imagination can dream up!

Lumber Details:
  • Tree: May reach a height of 70 to 120 feet, with a 24 to 36 inch diameter trunk
  • Sapwood Color: White with a reddish cast
  • Heartwood Color: Uniformly pale reddish brown or light tan
  • Grain: Usually fairly straight, but can also be curly or wavy. Sometimes exhibits decorative figuring like bird's eye, maple burl, blister, leaf, and fiddleback
  • Texture: Very fine and even
  • Working properties: Due to hardness, tools must be kept very sharp
  • Carving: Responds well to carving tools
  • Steam bending properties: Fair
  • Strength Properties: Very high bending strength. Resistance to compression parallel to the grain is high. Hardness is rated as medium. It is heavy, and resists denting and marring. Hard Maple can be up to 25 percent harder than Soft Maple
(1) Maple by the Piece-1/4" Thickness

Correct dimensions. Looks great. I’m letting it acclimate before using but I have high expectations. It is not super flat, has a bit of a cup across the width.

I am scale model enthusiast who likes to scratch build. "Midwest products" No longer restock sheet hardwood. I generally use sheets much thinner than this. I guess my days of modeling the scale that I'm used to is done. Thank you for having at least this thickness anyways.

I want to modify a rev-a-shelf 3" pull out cabinet so that instead of having metal rails embedded in the surface of the shelf to keep food items from falling off, it has these wood lengths tacked to the outside of the shelf, which will give me more usable shelf space while maintaining the overall look of the pull out cabinet.

Is this wood solid maple?
Robert B on May 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes.
can custom width size be ordered ( 2 1/4")?
Ed J on Jul 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Sorry the only widths we have for most of our lumber is 1-1/2", 3" and 5". We don't custom cut for size.
Can I make a dovetail box using 1/4" thick maple?
Ck-Selvam on Jun 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I would bet you can. 1/4 inch should be sturdy enough, depending on the size of the box and it's intended use (ie. jewelry as opposed to lead ingot storage). - Cheers, Chris S.
Is the wood easy to paint on?
Linda Shek Staff on Apr 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, depending on what you have on mind, say for fine art such as a portrait, you might want to seal it first so the paint doesn't bleed. Most polyurethane sprays should do the trick.
Can your maple boards be used for crafting products that come in contact with food (storage boxes, cutting boards, etc)?
Rafael S on Feb 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, there is no issue with the wood itself but you will want to research the best food-grade finishes. There are a number of good oil and wax options.
It states the width is 1 1/2" Is that the actual size?
Jack P on Jun 25, 2015
