Better tools cost a bit more
Never used this tool before - was specked in a project- used to cut square holes for ebony plugs in mahogany- works well and as expected- finish and length of shaft were better than no name set I bought and returned - bought oversized handle which makes easier to use

Cherry Hand Rail and Railing
The mortising chisel was the perfect tool to use in cutting square holes in the cherry railing and flooring to hold the metal balusters for my project. I recommend purchasing the companion chisel handle to use with this tool. I have attached before and after photos to inspire your project.
After: The Mortising Chisel was the perfect solution to cutting 48 holes to hold each baluster.
Before: The 1980's was calling and wanted their oak balusters back.

Works as designed
The chisel works as designed but needs a standard 1/2" chisel to finish the job after getting the mortise sqare.

how long will it stay sharp in a hardwood like sapele, and how do you sharpen it?
rb w on Dec 2, 2016
For 1/2 square balusters, do you have to drill 1/2 round hole first ? Also, do you have a mallet to punch each square hole?
Thanks in advance ....
Vincent W on Oct 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, a 1/2" hole must be drilled out first with a forstner bit. Yes, you will need to use a wood or hard rubber mallet to chisel out the mortise.
Question. Are there mortise chisel inserts for dimensional sized lumber. i.e 1 inch cedar board is 13/16? I want to insert a 1 in cedar board into a 4x4 post.
len u on Jun 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure what you are asking but the chisel is 1/2 " and cuts a 1/2 in whole.
what size is the top barrel 5/8 or 3/4?
