Whether for the home shop or the production floor, Next Wave SHARK HD510 makes an exceptionally versatile tool that can meet all your machining needs. It can shape, drill, carve, dado and rabbet a huge variety of projects made from wood, soft metals, composites, or plastics. The Next Wave SHARK HD510 features robust, industrial-grade components: a heavy-duty aluminum- and steel-reinforced gantry, an extruded aluminum router mount, interlocking aluminum table, linear rails and guides, and anti-backlash, wear-compensated lead screws on all axes. Except for the router (see compatible router list below), it ships standard with everything needed to get started: the latest version of Vectric VCarve design software, a color pendant controller, two hold-down clamps, a 3/8'' carbide V-bit, and Next Wave Automation’s exclusive, patented Virtual Zero Unlimited software. It's fully compatible with Next Wave Automation’s extensive line of accessories: laser, 4th axis, scanner, and more. Made in the USA and backed by a full one-year warranty and lifetime technical support.

Prompt technical support from actual human beings!
This review is for the HD4 with laser that I have owned it for 3 years. I had zero experience working with CNC machines prior to this purchase and it has been a very fun addition to the workshop. It came with Vetric software which is easy to learn thanks to the scores of online tutorials. I just ran into a technical issue with the laser and was worried it was broken. I called up Nextwave and within 5 minutes and 1 diagnostic test the problem was solved. The problem was "operator-error, btw. Here is a sample of what I have done with this machine.

Works like a champ
The machine works as advertised. It does make easy work of 3D carving and 2D cutting of what ever you need,as long as you know how to use the software. Small learning curve on that. And yes, it is correct there is little to no "craftsmanship to use this machine, however it is nothing but a tool just like a bandsaw or table saw.

Great Machine
This was an upgrade for us as we replaced our older Piranha CNC. Had an issue from shipping where the Y Axis positioning screw had some slop in it. Quickly solved by tightening the connection to the screw shaft to the motor.

I love the machine. I had some initial problems with broken T-nut on the Z axis and loose set screws all around, but mfg was very responsive. I did have to disassemble some parts and re-assemble to fix, but it only took 1/2 hour or so. Software (Vectric) that came with it is as much fun as the tool. You can create things and see them in 3D without actually using the machine. The creativity is 90% of the fun for me.

Over al. Pretty good. In three or four months I have it .I had to recalibrate it once and the set screws on one motor came loose causing a problem with the job I was doing.

What is the difference between the shark hd4 and hd5? Other than the cost.
A N on Aug 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The gantry on the HD5 was redesigned and is substantially more rigid than the HD4. The HD5 has linier rails directly mounted to the gantry cross bar in place of the tube rails on the HD4. And the HD5 router/spindle mount is aluminum instead of plastic/composite found on the HD4. These changes greatly reduce the router/spindle movement that seemed to plague the HD4 from many of the reviews that I have read. Also, to note, Next Wave offers an “upgrade” for HD4 owners to replace their gantry with a HD5 gantry.

Can that 2hp. Water cooled spindle be used on the hd5 and what is the cost? Thank you
Rodney S on Apr 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes. You’ll need the 60mm spindle mount rather tgan the standard 3 1/2” router mount though. I use a 3hp 2.2kw spindle on my HD5 and it works great. Both the 2.2kw and 1.5kw spindles use the same mount.

I’m looking to buy this for a school. Can I download the software on multiple computers for multiple students to design projects at once?
Brian W on Apr 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I checked and the software company Vectric and they say

"Vectric's license allows any of our software programs to be installed on up to 3 PC's for a single user.

If access to any one of the computers is shared with work colleagues, or anyone who is likely
to access the software, then the software must only be installed onto one computer."

So unfortunately it looks like you would not be able to put on multiple computers. You might call Vectric to see if they have a license for school use. Their contact website is. https://www.vectric.com/support.
I need to be able to cut acrylic circles. Does the piece move when your cuting and not engraving?
Ron M on Apr 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: There are several options for cutting circles. Since the end result will be an unsecured piece of acrylic you could choose to leave "tabs" in place to keep the material secure or utilize a vacuum jig to hold the material securely.

Are you able to add extended bed to a machine ?
Jim B on Nov 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The Shark HD5 is available as either a standard or extended bed.

Converting from the standard bed to the extended would require a number of components, which would be available from the manufacturer, NextWave Automation. It may also require a software upgrade from VCarve Desktop to VCarve Pro.
