First Lathe
We wanted to get into turning and spoke to Matt @ the Salem NH store. After talking with him this is what we chose for a few reasons. 1. For the money it is a powerful and smooth lathe. 2. It was on sale. 3. Have yet to find a bad review on this lathe.
So now over a year after we bought this lathe I am writing this. It has been able to turn a finished 9 inch bowl. I have made many projects on this lathe and from bookmarks to a urn for someone. And all types of woods from a pine bowl to bloodwood and even acrylics.
The only real complaint I have is yet the belt cover is subpar to the rest of the machine. But leave it on the middle setting and you will be more than happy. We are even thinking of another one of these to bring as a demo lathe at shows.

Excellent midi lathe
Well built and designed. No vibration. The DC motor with reversibility and variable speed is great. Extensive array of accessories also available for maximum flexibility of use. In addition, the spindle lock mechanism is very convenient and well designed.

Great lathe.
I like the intermediate size and the variable speed adjustment.
I don't know why I would use the reverse switch but it's part of the package. It looks to be well made and was double boxed when shipped.

The Nova Comet I I worked to my satisfaction
The power is good for the amount of money spent. The best thing about this lathe is the variable speed which you can adjust with the turn of a nob. I would defiantly recommend to a friend.

Nova Comet II
Excellent power. So far I am pleased. Amazed how quiet it is. Only thing I think would make it better would be if they offered a stand and an extension stand.

Fantastic purchase
I've lived with this lathe for about 24 hours now and so far I think it is a great lathe. Packaging was good. The lathe comes mostly assembled, packed in styrofoam, wrapped in plastic and with a light coat of rust inhibitor. A bit of the styrofoam had kind of fused to the vinyl covered stop button on mine but that doesn't effect operation. Assembly was simply affixing a couple of knobs and screws and it was set. I also attached the chuck that I got with the current deal. The variable speed works quite well and after several hours of operation neither the speed controller nor motor were at all hot. The thing is whisper quiet and super smooth at all speeds so far. The belt cover is plastic but well secured and free of rattles. It has a spindle lock which makes chuck adjustments or headstock changes nice and easy. My tail stock was perfectly aligned from the factory but it's adjustable if required. Both have #2 MT. There is a momentary delay on the soft start but shutdown is fast. So far I've made 2 pens, and turned some miscellaneous handles, all were very easy and the lathe performed well. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase.

Excellent First Lathe
This was my first lathe. I love it! It took a little getting used to how it turns on--it hesitates, then hits full speed almost immediately. I have turned pens and bowls on it with no problem. The only thing it lacks is digital speed readout. But it did include a chuck when I bought it, and that was definitely worth the tradeoff.

For the newer package that includes chuck and tools, the chuck is worth it, the tools are not. They are small and cheap and, in my opinion, make learning how to turn more difficult. Additionally, they are steel, not carbide, so the tools WILL have to be sharpened before then can be used, and sharpening them means getting a grinder and learning how to use it. Buy it for the lathe and the chuck, forget the tools.

Great for beginners
To start off, this lathe is wonderful and teknatool has great customer service. Make sure to register your warranty! The only things that stop me from giving the lathe 5 stars are probably the plastic locking devices. Althouhgh they work fine, they don't last forever so be gently. When turning between centers ALWAYS drive the spur in off the lathe. Do not use the tail stock to drive it in. Also, with the size of the lathe the location of the speed control is exposed to all sorts of wood shavings and dust. I'd recommend always cleaning the speed control and motor off after each use, and during each use if you are turning for longer than an hour. Canned air or compressor work very well. Overall great lathe for a beginner to learn or for an expert to do some small scale projects like pens and such. I've turned bowls up to 9" wide and 5" tall on this with no problem.

nice but not the ultimate
the electrics are great, quiet motor, runs smooth. I end up changing belt positions more then I thought I would have to. The casting, however, are not machined particularly smooth, the belt cover doesn't fit the casting, and if you actually want to use the screw knob to hold it shut, takes way too many turns. But, when you get right down to it, it turns fine, smooth enough, not hard to use at all. The chuck is first rate too.

What size is the internal (female) thread used to attach the rubber feet? I will want to attach the lathe to something solid so it won't walk.

Is this the 2013 edition and does it come with a chuck?
Jay S on Nov 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I bought it last November and it did come with a chuck. I had to make 130 pens to give away at my son's wedding. It worked well. Not as good as my Oneway that I have up in Canada. But it did the job.
Hope this helps.

BEST ANSWER: It is 1" x 8. Make sure you get the right chuck for it!
Can tis lathe be used for turning metal?
Donald A on Jan 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It is not a metal turning lathe. You may be able to turn metal on any wood lathe, depending on what metal, and what you are trying to make. But there is no tool holder here, no way to use single point cutting tools. It is really too light for metal work anyway.
How does one remove the desirable chuck from the lathe?? The chuck is stuck on the lathe!
Ed M on Dec 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The drive spindle has external threads on the outer diameter and a 2 Morse taper on the inner diameter. The faceplate and various chucks thread on to the external threads on the drive spindle. There is a spindle lock on the back of the machine.
Can this Lathe machine High Pressure Laminate Material?
Dipak S on Apr 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: IMHO- that depends. Lots of variables. There are a number of HPLs available, made of different materials. Some I would not try on any woodworking lathe. But with carbide tools, good dust collection, and proper protection (face shield, dust mask, etc.) you could give it a try. This is not an engine (machine shop) lathe, you understand. I think your question could well have been- will ANY woodworking lathe machine High Pres. Lam. This is a small lathe, with belt drive, you will not chug along at slow speeds very well.
is there a bed extension available?
