The Nova G3 Chuck is a four-jaw, self-centering scroll chuck for Mini and Midi lathes with up to a 16" swing over the bed. It's an excellent high-powered geared chuck with TuffLock™ grip for incredibly solid, vibration free performance. The single-handed operation means more time turning and less time setting up. The Nova G3 has less weight, and less overhang than the larger chucks - perfect for smaller lathe spindles. The minimal 1.79" body length maximizes your distance between centers, and reduces stress on the spindle. This is an insert chuck, and requires you to purchase a dedicated Insert/Adapter for mounting on your lathe. Includes a set of 2" (50mm) jaws.

Features:
  • Small, compact design minimizes load on small spindles and bearings.
  • Open back for easy cleaning.
  • Precise, powerful hardened gear action with Tuff Lock™ technology.
  • Single-handed operation with included chuck key.
  • Able to take all Nova accessory jaws. However, please note: the larger accessory jaws in the Nova line are not recommended for use on the Nova G3 Insert Chuck. For more information, see the offers for individual jaw sets.

Features standard on all Nova chucks:
  • All Nova chucks are four-jaw, self centering scroll chucks for fast, secure setups.
  • The four jaw design firmly grips both round and square wood.
  • Quality materials.
  • Precision machined in one operation from a solid steel block for optimal accuracy.
  • Polished self metal finish to allow for closer tolerances and accuracy.
  • Common accessory jaw fixing profile — compatible across all Nova chucks and accessories.
  • Jaw slides made from high-tech copper fused steel for maximum hardness, wear, and self-lubricating properties.
  • Special woodturning dovetail profile on jaws.
  • Auto safety stop feature — jaw slides can't protrude past the chuck body.
  • Comprehensive instructions.
  • Common insert/adaptor fitting is compatible across all Nova chucks.
  • Safe Lock™ Woodworm screw included for fast mounting of rough timbers.
  • 2-Year Warranty.

Nova G3 Insert Chuck
I have been very pleased with this chuck in the little bit that I have used it. It works out very nice in combination with my 30 year old Craftsmen lathe. The chuck is opening up new possibilities for me to turn as now I can turn items that do not have to be held between the head and tail stock.

Nova G3 Chuck
I have had only one occasion to use the G3 but I thoroughly love it. At this point I can only imagine what I can do with it. As soon as I get my Christmas presents made I'll be "playing" with it a lot. It is a lot easier to use than I had imagined. I like the idea of tightening all the jaws at the same time. Keeps everything centered. Excellent quality at a fair price!

Will it fit my shopsmith 500?
Ron M on Feb 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It will most likely fit your lathe but you may need an adapter, the most common is an 8tpi thread, the manual is a good place to look to find that measurement.
will it fit a 1+ 8 tpi with out a insert/adapter ?
robert v on Nov 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, an insert adapter is required.
Will this fit my harbor freight 12" lathe or do I need an insert?
Lee F on Dec 2, 2015
BEST ANSWER: If you have the 12x36 inch wood lathe from HF I believe it has a 1inch 8tpi drive spindle. you will need the "D insert adapter".
I have a old lathe built by the mechanical engineering department at Purdue University. I'm trying to find a chuck that will screw onto the headstock spindle. The headstock threads are 1 1/4 inch and 12TPI will the G 3 work?
Brilly on Jul 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: this Chuck uses inserts that thread into the back so as long as you order it with the 1-1/4 x 12 tpi insert it will work fine.. I had the same issue with a 1 x 10tpi spindle
Hello, I bought a nova g3 and didn't realize that it was threaded for 1 inch 8 tpi. I ordered what I thought was an adapter so that I could use it on my lathe which is 3/4 16 tpi. The adapter is about 1 and 3/8 inches and is way too large to fit this chuck. What exactly do I need??
David S on Apr 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The adapter that you purchased works on the Nova Chuck Insert (#45748)
Will it fit my jet jwl1221vs
Francis C on Feb 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The chuck will work with your Jet lathe, but it requires an adapter (1" by 8 threads per inch) to fit the threads on your lathe. One of its advantages is that the adapters are available for many different lathe mounting threads.
Bought an Excelsior mini lathe . Will this fit mine and if so which adapter do I need ? Thanks
Thomas M on Jun 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thomas,
You will need the insert for the lathe spindle, a 1:x 8 TPI. It threads in and locks with a set screw. Enjoy!
I have a lathe with a headstock spindle threaded with M33 x 3,5. Do I need a adapter for the Nova G3 chuck?
Leonardo on Aug 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This is a great chuck. And being an insert chuck you can adapt it to many different spindles.
This is what I found out about the chuck: Threads Covered:
•Std Insert/Adaptor Type Chuck (Code 48202) Requires an insert to fit to lathe. Some resellers may sell this separately, check with them. For list of the Insert/Adaptors available, see HERE

•M33x3.5 Dedicated Threaded Chuck (Code 48215)

To be sure check out teknatool website.
I have a craftsman lathe will this work on it?
David G on Nov 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: David. I am not familar with the craftsman but you just have determine your mount to the lathe. Nova will have an adaptor to mount to your lathe if it is not standard. I have a shopsmith which has it own mounting system and I was able to get the adaptor to mount to my machine. Good luck and happy turning.
Will this chuck screw onto my Rikon mini lathe?
Gonzalo C on Nov 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I believe the Rikon has a 1X8 spindle so this chuck should fit. The chuck is a good value, enjoy it
I have an Excelsior mini lathe, will the Nova G3 work with it to turn Chess pieces, and what else will I need to do what I want ?
Dale P on Jan 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I bought one and love it! But you need to make sure that the chuck adapter collette fits your lathe’s driveshaft. They come in many sizes, threaded and unthreaded. And yes, it will turn chess pieces, but you will have to turn them on stock at least an inch if not 1.75” longer than the piece your are working, as there is a pretty deep recess into the jaws of the chuck. If I were doing it, I’d turn a longer stock and several pieces.
will Robert Sorby Patriot zero jaws fit on this Nova chuck?
John B on Sep 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: John: I do not have any Patriot Zero jaws so I don't know if they would fit the G3. I purchased this check because all the previous Nova chuck jaws fit, and they do. I love the action and size and may but another so I don't have to change jaws as often. I have four or five Nova chucks of various sizes already.
Is it possible there are adapters for the Nova Chucks available for old Craftsman lathes?
Frank U on Feb 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It really just depends on the threads on your main spindle.. I have an old atlas lathe and with a rare thread pitch and this chuck still worked perfect
Is this the best Chuck to use with Rockler's Excelsior lathe?
DAVID H on Dec 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This is an excellent chuck with a large number of jaw sets available for different projects. I chose the G3 over the Precision Midi because you an chuck up with one hand with the G3
will this chuck work with my Rockwell model 46-140 11" lathe that has i think a 7/8 x 14 teeth per inch r/h thread spindle ?
Charlie M on Dec 14, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Charlie. This chuck has 1" x 8 tpi threads.Maybe you can find an adapter to fit your lathe
Can you chuck 2” square in the chuck?

BEST ANSWER: I have chucked 8/4 square stock but I didn't actually measure the stock size
I need a chuck to hold a 12 " Dia, x 12" in length will a G3 Nova do the job?.
Ed W on Oct 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: 12" diameter, yes, but not both. I would step up to a SuperNova2 that can handle larger jaws, has more mass, etc.
I have this chuck with an adapter to 1x 8tpi. The threads in the chuck that accept the adapter are 1-3/8" x 8tpi. I need a chuck that fits 1-1/4"x 8tpi. Is there a chuck that fits directly on the 1-1/4"X8tpi or an adapter that fits this chuck and goes on 1-1/4'x8tpi?
Tal B on Jul 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: My understanding is that all adapters have the same proprietary thread in the chuck. I'm not sure if it is a true 1-3/8"x8TPI or not. But it doesn't matter. You have to ask Nova for an adapter that fits 1-1/4" x8TPI
will this work with my Record Power lathe with 16" diameter spindle?
DeWayne H on Jan 12, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Sorry, can't answer that question. I use it on my 10" Excelsior Mini Lathe, and it works just fine. I assume that if the threads match up, it should work. Not sure how it would handle turnings up to 16", but for bowls up to 10" I am very pleased. Good value.
What insert/adapter do I need for this to fit my Excelsior Mini-Lathe?
Cole O on Nov 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You will need an insert with this chuck, you can get the chuck with thread that will screw directly to the lathe. It is a different part number
Will this nova G3 chuck fit on my 10x18 central machinery wood lathe?
Bobby P on Nov 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: it will fit your lathe only if Nova makes an adaptor for the size of your shaft. They make many so the chances are good.
I bought this and a Nova Comet II but the threads are way different size. I see mentions the chuck has 1” 8 tpi threading but is there a second version with a 2” size instead?
Brian on Jul 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: There is an adapter that you buy separate that you screw into the chuck and then screw the chuck to your lathe
I have a 12” craftsman lath with 3/4” 16tpi spindle, will the g3 work on my lathe ?
Ryan B on Mar 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but you will also need a 'chuck insert/adapter'.
what diameter is this chuck and do i need an insert for a 3/4 X16tpi spindle?
irving R on Jan 8, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This chuck comes with the standard 1 1/4 x 8. I don't know if you can get an adapter for 3/4 x16. Many lathes use a spendle of 1x8 and those adapter are common.
What size allen wrench is required for the lock screw of a Nova G3 chuck? Is it metric. I have a drawer full of allen wrenches but none seem to fit properly.
Vern Sr on Jan 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I measured the Allen wrench that came with the chuck and it appears to be a 5/32" SAE hexagonal wrench, near as I can figure. I found it interesting that Rockler couldn't answer such a simple question for you, and that their website (and everywhere else I checked on the web) doesn't allow for a proper answer.
I am brand new to woodturning and have never used a lathe of any kind. I am purchasing a mini wood lathe from Harbor Freight (10" x 18") and want to turn bowls, cups, jars, etc. After much research, I expect to purchase the Nova G3 scroll chuck. 1. Is this self-centering? I see no mention of that in the description. 2. I note that I must have an adaptor/insert to use it. The Harbor Freight lathe has an MT2 tailstock taper. Which adaptor/insert should I purchase?
Harv48 on Mar 13, 2017
Nova G3 Insert Chuck
Nova G3 Insert Chuck
Nova Chuck Inserts/Adapters
Nova Chuck Inserts/Adapters
BEST ANSWER: 1st, yes it is self centering. 2nd a scroll chuck goes on the headstock, the tail stock is just a tapered opening you basically jam stuff into. The headstock is threaded. So you need the Nova Chuck Adapter that matches the threads on your specific lathe.
will it fit my shop fox W1704 8"/16" ?
boats on Aug 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Nova G3 insert chuck requires an insert adapter to mate the chuck with the spindle on your lathe. You need to determine if there is chuck insert adapter that is the same diameter and thread as the spindle on your lathe. A number of different size insert adapters are available.
Will this work on the Jet 1014?
BillG on Aug 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will work you'll just need the 1"-8tpi insert... It's insert D and the part number is IDNS
can I purchase different size jaws for this chuck?
Fred S on May 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but be careful. It's easy to make a mistake.
Especially with size.
What is the internal thread size of the chuck for mounting to lathe adapter ?
Glen on Mar 19, 2020
BEST ANSWER: For my lathe the ID of the adapter is 1.000"
