The Nova Galaxi DVR 1644 Lathe is among a select few pioneering smart lathes on the market, featuring an incredibly smooth-running direct-drive motor controlled by a sophisticated microcomputer with keypad and digital readout. The computer features DVR (Digital Variable Reluctance) technology, which automatically adjusts and maintains the speed and power of the lathe based on resistance. It also provides various functions that assist you with your turning. It can measure the weight of your workpiece and adjust the performance accordingly, sense faults in your setup and advise, and instantly shut down power if it senses chisel dig-ins or spindle lockout. That, coupled with the fact that the Galaxi's motor has no belts or pulleys, results in an incredibly smooth, quiet turning experience. The computer also optimizes efficiency so that the motor only draws as much power as is needed, saving up to 80% in energy and emissions over conventional motors. With its high torque motor, cast iron construction, exceptional structural strength and smart design, the NOVA Galaxi Lathe has the power and capacity to handle the most demanding turning operations with ease.

Features:

  • Adaptive Control™ software provides intelligent computerized control to assist with your turning
  • Measures workpiece weight and adjusts performance accordingly
  • Senses faults in the set up and suggests solutions
  • Senses safety issues such as chisel dig-ins and spindle lock
  • 1.75HP (115v) high torque motor has the power to handle extra-large bowls using an optional outrigger, or extra-long spindles using an optional bed extension. When converting (plug change only) to 230v, you get 2.3HP of torque
  • No belts or pulleys to cause vibration
  • Pre-select your five favorite speeds so you can switch speeds with the push of a button
  • Easy-to-use, push-button electronic variable speed with forward and reverse
  • Computer-controlled motor only draws as much power as it needs, saving up to 80% in energy and emissions over conventional motors

Did a few practice turns on this lathe and it sure is quiet. Almost silent. The DVR drive is a dream...no belts to adjust...from 100rpm all the way to 5000rpm...simply great.

I had some problems at first but I believe that I had one if the first ones made. The service was very helpful Everything has been worked out and I am very very happy with my lathe. The change of speeds is very remarkable Just a push of the button and the speed of the lathe changes within an instant. Very good feature. The power of the motor is second to none. You cannot bog it down. Most turning I do exceeds no more than 1000 rpms Startup May be as low as 300 rpms I love this lathe and would recommend it to anyone.

I ordered the lathe and it came in less than a week was very well packed, the lathe is easy to set up and program how you want it, this lathe is a Cadillac very smooth and very nice to work on, plenty of torque on the 110 volt but can be converted to 220 just by changing the plug, I have worked on other lathes before and I really love this lathe

Great lathe for the price
I previously had a Nova dvr 3000, so was familiar with the overall technology, etc. the Galaxi is a much more substantial unit with a very solid feel. I assembled it myself - the components are heavy but can be managed. Haven't had a chance to turn much on it yet, but the one large piece I've done worked very nicely. Delivery was so fast that I never heard from Rockler that it had been shipped.

I like this machine
Lathe came in a single wood crate, over 500 lbs. crate opened easily, and removal of the legs(held with 4 bolts each was relatively easy. removal of the headstock, tail stock and banjo allowed me to move the way (this is a two man job due to weight). The machine came together easily, the instructions are well written and if followed allows to run this very quiet and powerful lathe with ease. I liked my Nova 1644, but this DVR is better in every way.

Best lathe ever
What more can be said about this incredible lathe. So quite you can turn it on in the middle of a conversation and not be rude. Smooth beyond belief. Speed adjustments happen almost instantly. The electronic braking will save you but for sure, we all still make a mistake and hang a tool every once in a while and this lathe will stop on its own to let you pull the tool out.

I work in IT and mentor robotics teams and this lathe uses modern electronic controls with the direct drive motor that simply set it so far apart from tradition products.

This is not gimmick technology this is the perfect application of tech applied to a century's old art form.

Love it!
I've only turned a few bowls so far but I love it. I have arthritis in my neck and being able to swivel the headstock is a life saver. Saves me a lot of pain. Everything works so smoothly. Can't wait to buy the outrigger.

How many boxes does the Nova Galaxy DVR 1644 lathe ship in, and what size& weight are the individual boxes?
Ted C on Aug 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The lathe and all related parts come in a single wooden crate that weighs about 500 lbs. I had the delivery truck put it in my garage shop through the rollup door. There are 5 basic component parts: headstock, bed, two leg ends, and everything else (tailstock, etc.) While the instructions say it takes two people to assemble, I did it myself by staging assembly of the parts with supports as I lifted/moved them into place. Two people would be better. Enjoy!
Working on shop layout, what is the foot print of the lathe?
Mike R on Jan 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hello, yes the dimentions are w=20", l=66", h=48.5". It is a monster lathe for me. Hope this helps.

I am needing a new larger lathe, and then last weekend my mini lathe gave out, I use this to make pens and small bowls, if I invested in this machine would it cover both my lathe needs?
Terry W on Mar 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will and it will allow you to expand your horizons to bigger and better things too. I have done pens, small bowls, and pepper mills and I just got this last week as I was wanting to do bigger more useful bowl like salad bowls and vases, things I could never do on my small lathe. And not having to never change a belt or be limited to 5 or 6 speeds will be a huge bonus. I look forward to using it a lot more.
