Nova Precision Midi 1" 8-TPI Direct Thread Chuck

Item #
92% of 100

The Nova Precision Midi Direct Thread Chuck is the smallest chuck in the Nova lineup—ideal for lathes with up to a 12" swing over the bed. Its small size minimizes the load on small spindles and bearings, yet is extremely accurate, and built to the same exacting standards as the SuperNova 2 and Titan Chucks. It also accepts the same accessory jaws as other Nova chucks. Features auto jaw stop, anti-seize copper composite jaw slides, Safe-Lock™ Woodworm Screw and 50mm Jaws as standard. Quick two-handled operation makes it ideal for fast production turning of smaller pieces.

  • Recommended for power work holding on lathes up to 300mm/12" diameter swing.
  • Up to 350mm/14" diameter bowls using 50mm/2" Jaws (supplied with chuck)
  • Up to 50mm/2" length spigots (using 50mm/2" Jaws (supplied with chuck)
  • Full packaged weight is (std) 1.3 kgs/3 lbs.
  • Body size 85mm/3.35".
  • Cannot be used with adapters/inserts.

Features of Nova Precision Midi Chuck:

  • Small, compact design minimizes load on small spindles and bearings.
  • 2-Lever operation offers very fast action—ideal for production turning of small pieces.
  • Made from precision machined 1045 high tensile steel.
  • Able to take all Nova accessory jaws. However, please note: the larger accessory jaws in the Nova line are not recommended for use on the Precision Midi Chuck. For more information, see the offers for individual jaw sets.

Features standard on all Nova chucks:

  • All Nova chucks are four-jaw, self-centering scroll chucks for fast, secure setups.
  • The four jaw design firmly grips both round and square wood.
  • Quality materials.
  • Precision machined in one operation from a solid steel block for optimal accuracy.
  • Polished self-metal finish to allow for closer tolerances and accuracy.
  • Jaw slides made from high-tech copper fused steel for maximum hardness, wear, and self-lubricating properties.
  • Special woodturning dovetail profile on jaws.
  • Auto safety stop feature—jaw slides can't protrude past the chuck body.
  • Comprehensive instructions.
  • Safe Lock™ Woodworm screw included for fast mounting of rough timbers.
  • 6-Year Warranty.

Novice wood worker
I purchased the Nova Midi chuck to add to the Excelsior lath I bought from Rockler. I used it to turn some large oak buttons for the communion rail at our church. The stalk of the button was an inch and a quarter oak dowel. I used the woodworm screw included with the chuck. It worked well.

Woodworking Experience:
Quality product, a great bargain
This chuck is a good heavy, solid piece of hardware. It holds my work firmly, and I like the fact that it includes a tension adjustment to ensure that it won't loosen while you're using it, It installed easily and fit perfectly on my Central Machinery mini lathe, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone interested in purchasing one.

This chuck makes turning easy
Using this chuck was easy to use. Easy to set up. I took an old square leg from an old table using this chuck and turned made salt and pepper shakers. I like the way it holds the wood in the chuck. When I set this chuck up the first time I first read the directions and it was easy. now I am making gavels using all types and colors of wood.

Will this chuck fit a delta lath?
Brent S on May 28, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I would think any delta lathe with the typical 1" 8 threads-per-inch male threaded drive spindle should be perfect.

If you're not sure, just measure the diameter of the spindle on the threads, should be 1" from the tops of the threads. Then the peak of each thread should be 1/8" from each adjacent one.

My lathe is an older Delta, but they had that standard when it was made already. You should be good; I would just measure the spindle real quick to double check.

Does this chuck have spindle lock set screws to enable reverse turning?
Sal B on Aug 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes it does. I have a Nova 1624 and had trimmed and sanded in reverse with this chuck.
Will the nova cole jaws set or the mini cole jaw set work with this chuck?
Tim E on Feb 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, and yes! I have this for my excelsior midi lathe. I am even able to use both the regular and the large jaw sets for secure and versitile chucking, even larger pieces. I use my lathe just about daily, and I have had zero issues, even with frequent jaw changes. I found I could turn just about anything within the 9" depth of the lathe. I did buy the lathe bed extenstion, and though I have not turned longer pieces yet, it is super handy for simply sliding the tailstock out of the work area, and quickly bringing it back into play. I have been turning for 2+ years now.

does it fit on a proinsa TM300?
noah k on Dec 17, 2016

I quickly googled "proinsa TM300" and found a user who states that the spindle size is 1-1/8" x 14tpi. The
chuck is 1" x 8tpi. You should verify this on your unit, and if that is the spindle size of your machine, then NO
it will not fit. Just count the number of thread points are within an inch and that is your tpi. Hope this helps.
As a side note the Nova Midi is great!

I do not see the 2 levers that are included with this chuck, how do you tighten and loosen it?
Tiredasz on Feb 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It comes with two short levers. They work fine but I had to get longer ones to help with my arthritis
Your info says this chuck can't be used with adaptors/inserts. Please explain further -- are there adaptors/inserts that fit other Nova chucks that don't fit this one? I assume this chuck is suitable for your 10x18 lathe, has the right threads to match its spindle. Please confirm.
Fred on Jul 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I do not know about other Nova chucks and adaptors/inserts. This is my first and only chuck. I use it with an Excelsior lathe that I purchased from Rockler and it works very well. The threads match that lathe.
Will the nova cole jaws set or the mini cole jaw set work with this chuck?
Tim E on Feb 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it works with all Nova jaw sets.
What’s the actual size of the spindle that the chuck mounts to ? I’m looking to buy a chuck but the spindle on my lathe is 3/4” with 6 threads in 11/16” instead of 1”
A D Banks on Aug 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: They sell an adapter if you need it. I had to get one myself.
I have a Shop Fox lathe that has the 3/4-16 threads. I also have an adaptor 3/4-16 x 1-8. Will this adaptor fit this chuck?
Rusty on Sep 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: yes, as long as you have the adapter
will this fit a craftsman 103.23070?
Derek M on May 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This chuck has a 1"-8tpi. The old craftsman lathes have a 3/4"-16tpi for the thread on the headstock where a chuck or plate would attach. If yours has the 3/4" then no this chuck would not work. You would need to get the G3 insert chuck #45748 and an adapter #47239 to work on your lathe.

will this chuck work on a shop smith? if not. what chuck would work?
freeze on Jan 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Check the thread count and diameter on your shop smith...if the chuck threads on properly, I see no reason that it would't work. The problem might be that Shopsmith, in order to control sales, made it distinct from Rockwell/Delta and others. Good Luck with that measurement!
