Working Fine
Installed two pairs of the Portamates to accommodate 12 foot lumber I stock (keeps supports close enough to help prevent warpage). Easy to install. So far, working perfectly. I now have my stock organized. It' wonderful to look at the rack and know what I have without pawing through a big pile of lumber.

Flexible storage
I have installed three rack systems so far and have a fourth one waiting for me to clear a path to the wall. Two are in the unheated portion of my shop building and the balance are going into the heated side. For their size they hold an amazing amount of weight. I work in hardwoods and 4/4 boards add up fast in oak and maple.

Portamate Lumber Rack is cost effective storage solution
The Portamate Lumber Rack is a low cost way to store lumber, pipes and any other long items that you can't stand on end for storage. The unit takes very little space and will hold hundreds of pounds. I ordered two sets and placed them at 32" intervals which equals 8' and is half the distance the units are designed to be spaced. I did this because I was not sure how strong the units would actually be. After installation, I wouldn't have any hesitation with spacing them 64" apart as per instructions. I looked at several options for lumber storage and for the price these can not be beat. If I had more wall space, I would order more.

Great product
Very impressed with the stability of these racks. I have 4 sets in my shop now making up too large racks. Make sure to pay attention when installing and don't do it backwards like I did my first one. The screws to not come back out.

My garage is a mess. With SIX lateral supports, I'll have more options than my current plan. I've already built a very flexible rolling cut-offs bin, and I'll soon build a sheet-goods holder. This product will allow me better organization of long wood pieces, and I'll appreciate the ease of having good visual access too.

Because I am too lazy to build my own and this was an easy solution. Also a little slimmer than building one out of wood.

I need to rack heavy lumber (e.g. 2-3" thick and 7-11' long) for bar tops and and thicker materials for fireplace mantels. Could two of these units be erected next to each other to increase carrying capacity? Also, can some larger tubular steel be place over the horizontal pieces to make it able to rack 20" wide pieces?
Jerryco on May 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: A. Sure. Put one vertical on each stud if you want. B. Don't see how, wouldn't even try. The horizontal pieces don't seem strong enough to bear the load: I bet they'd bend.
When you say "each," do you mean each single bracket or each pair of brackets?
Bruce B on Sep 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: 'Each' refers to one complete system, both uprights with six levels for storing
Can I store my lumber on edge instead of flat?
Joe E on Apr 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The rack shelf spacing is aprox. 6". You can redrill for wider spacing. So I guess the answer is YES after you set your shelf spacing to what you need.
Are these sold as a pair or single vertical units?
Nick P on May 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. They come as a nice functional pair and work very well for wood storage.
Can you cut them in half to make a longer rack??
ECduzzit on Jun 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: it is not recommended
I would like to get the lumber rack but the place I'm going to use is like a storage unit that I can't drill holes in walls will it sit on the floor on its own?
Sammy G on Jul 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I purchased 2 treated 4x4x6 post and used hose clamps to mount around support post of storage building which were on 4' centers. Mounted rack on post. So far so good.
Is this wall mount or free standing?
Spike on Mar 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This lumber rack mounts to the wall,it is very strong and holds a good amount of lumber.
I can see the height and the depth but not the length from end to end?!???
Crowing rooster on Nov 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You mount the end rails to the wall individually, so that part is up to you. If you mount them too far apart, any lumber you store may sag and bow in the middle. Too close together and the ends of your lumber will drop causing upward bow in the center. Mine are 4 ft apart with no problem for 8 ft lumber.
Are the six layers fixed as part of the vertical supports or could I use just three for example for stuff that's 8 or 10 inches high?
Lonelyringer on Dec 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Mine slides down the rail until it hits a stop-screw. I suppose, unless they have changed the design in the 2 years since I bought it, that you could drill new holes and move the stop-screw......
Could two of these be used back to back and mounted on casters to make a mobile rack?
Evan P on May 14, 2017
BEST ANSWER: That would depend on how much weight you put on them. I suppose if you built an "a-frame" style rack it could be loaded up without tipping over.
I plan to install in my shop. how long are the uprights? I need at least 5 ft. Do they come longer?
Roger L on Sep 12, 2018
My basement walls are solid poured concrete. what method and materials should I use to attach the system to the wall?
Richard H on May 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Concrete anchors. Several styles readily available in any hardware store. Choose one that will support your anticipated weight.
