I ordered this router because I’m getting to the point where I need one lighter than my plunge router—plus I like being able to change routers rather than change bits. It fits the bill.

Perfect for my router table
Built a router table and this router works great in it. I really needed something with both 1/4 in and 1/2 in collets.

Great Router for the money
After 30 years my Craftsman Router gave up the ghost in the middle of a project. I ordered this from Rockler and when it arrived, after redrilling my router table for the bolt configuration on the Porter Cable, BOOM, it went right to work and rounded over block after block on the project which I delivered the next day. I'm impressed with its performance and smooth running.

Porter Cable 690LR Router
This is a greater home shop router. Does an excellent job on most woodworking projects. This is the second 690LR router I have purchased. The first was 15 years ago. The first router still runs perfect. I use it for hand routing. It is light weight and easily handled. The second router is for use in old Bench Dog Table along with my Rockler Hi Lift. works great.

Bought because is on sale and at good price. I have a much older P-C 690LR which still runs well after more than twenty hobby years. (Full disclosure - I did have to take it in once to have the power cord redone because it was shorting) So I decided to get another so I could keep a couple set-ups ready. I also have a 3 1/2 HP Hitachi in my router table.

Have a Sears router, had it for decades. Need a new one, and this Porter Cable router has many positive reviews. Judging from reviews and Rockler description that it's a tried and true power tool -- "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." -- it seems an excellent choice, and at a good price.

Does this router work with a variable speed control ?
Rex B on Apr 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I use this motor in my router table, I have a variable speed control mounted on the outside of the cabinet which is very convenient. I back off on the speed when using large bits, you know you're going too fast when there is vibration.
Do 1/4" and 1/2" collets come with it? 690LR router
A shopper on Jun 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes they do
Do the PC templates fit the sub base of this router directly or do I need another sub base to use them? I'd like to get a dovetail jig eventually and need to use them
John T on Jul 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I believe that you are talking about porter cable guide bushings. At least I think you are. If that is
indeed the case then the answer is yes. The Porter Cable 690 base has the opening size to fit the
bushings
Does this router have soft start?
Matthew W on Oct 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It is single-speed, no soft start. However, there is minimal jerking at startup because it is only 1-3/4 hp.

Would this router be suitable for use in UK ?
John K on Nov 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This has been a great router, but it runs on 110vac. I can trembler if you guys are 110 or 220 if you are running on 220 then you need to check if porter cable makes one rated for your voltage if not I would look into a trend router, I believe they are a uk company, I have one of their plunge routers and like that one as well. Good luck, hope this helped.
I'm using the
1" D x 1-3/4" H x 1/2" Shank Rockler Pattern Flush Trim Bit
Item #: 37348 to pattern shape two pieces of 3/4" thick Marine plywood that will be laminated together to build an inflatable boat transom. Which router would be the best choice for this bit and job? I plan to cut the 1.5" thick transom plug about 1/4" proud of the transom template on all sides so the bit will be trimming about 1/4 of stock 1.5" thick. The transom plug is of such size, shape and weight I figured it would be best to clamp it to the work table and hand hold the router. two concerns are that I want a router powerful enough to do the job without bogging down and rippling the edge yet I want a router that's not to big that I can't control it with two hands. I'm looking at the Porter 690LR or the Porter 7918, is the Porter 7918 to large and powerful to hold two handed? on bench clamped stock? Is there a better choice than one of these routers?

does the base have a 1 3/16" opening for guide bushing?
PAUL G on Apr 3, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The black plastic base does have a 1-3/16" opening for the Porter Cable style guide bushing. however, i have the Shop Fox bushing set and the black base recess is not deep enough for the bushing such that the bottom face of the bushing sits proud of the rest of the black base. so, maybe this is an issue with the bushing set i have. i am not sure
Is this router considered a midsized router and can it fit the portable convertible bench top table?
Richard B on Jan 25, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I believe this router to be a fairly large one, I would not consider it as a midsize. I could not answer with 100% certainty either way on fitting a convertible bench top. I have always found fitting to be difficult if not paired with the same brand. I needed to purchase a specific router plate when fitting mine.

Bill A on May 31, 2016

On the router base, what is the diameter of the hole in the base? I have a guide bushing for a dovetail jig that is 1 3/4" O.D., and it needs to fit the opening in the router base.

Can this router be use to flatten wood slabs using a router sledge jig?
Enrique D on May 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It will work for that. Its a bit under-powered if you are using a large bit, like 2" or you're making a real heavy cut, but take it slow, and give it a break to cool if you are doing a large slab, but it'll get the job done!!

My porter cable router did not have the line scribed on the motor base for measurments. I returned it and that one does not have a line either. Do i have to add my own line ?
Stephen D on May 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Stephan - Not sure what you mean by a line on the router base to measure from, but i can tell you that the brass set up bars they have are great. The bars or magnetic plastic stacking shims work great for me and are quite fast for set ups. They are great for your router table as well.
A porter cable 690 is supposed to fit my tab le. What is a 690LR?
Roger D on Dec 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: All of the Porter Cable brand routers will start with the model, in this case the 690. All 690's share the same motor, it usually the base that differs with options for standard handle, which is this model the 690LR, the LR stands for lever release.

Other 690's are the D handle, still uses all the same from this router, just adds a D handle.

The others are with a standard and also a plunge base, and they have a few of these, still a lever release in the standard, or D handle, but has a set screw release on the plunge base.

But a PC 690 always has the same size of the barrel (3 1/2"), and same Hp, collets, etc.

Rockler Offset Router Collet Wrenches for Porter-Cable
where is it made?
WYATT S on Mar 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The router itself is made in Mexico. The accessories are made in China. I have purchased over 50 of these routers over the years for my high production wood factory and they are excellent. RPM are very high, the cut is smooth and they last under heavy, daily use. Also, they are not as loud as many other routers.
