Excellent disc/belt sander for the price.
I bought this sander after reading positive reviews. This unit is small and not meant for industrial use. But it works well for smaller projects and hobby crafting. Well made, sturdy. So far has done what I needed it to do

Rikon 50-151 1" x 30" belt sander
I needed a bench top, narrow width belt sander. I am using this to shape wood and resin knife handles. I worked out of the box after minimal assembly.
This has worked as well as I expected. Does everything that I needed.
However, and there is always a however, I do need to spend more time practicing on scrap wood. For the price, it does what I want. Now if it would clean up after its self I would be in 7th heaven.

Varghese V on Oct 30, 2019
good value for the cost of the unit
Darryl A on Oct 29, 2019
I thought the variable speed would be a plus since running different materials sand differently. I do wooden spoons and utensils.

Because it’s a better, albeit more expensive alternative to the harbor freight 1x30.
Aidan K on Jan 20, 2019
Every Review has been a no less than 5 stars with the exception of a few. Using this for small wood plaques, seems pretty legit, cast iron and just seems to be able to do the job from other wood craftsmen's reviews. Also need a new combination sander, attempting to go back to hand sanding everything is adding another process.

where does one purchase the 5 inch discs and how are they attached (glued??)
John C on Oct 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: 5" PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) backed sanding discs, can be obtained from Rockler, hardware stores and home centers.
A 100 grit disc is furnished and affixed to the unit.
You may want to purchase an assortment of grits, to have on hand---80, 150, 220.
PSA sanding discs feature an adhesive on the back-side---peel off the liner and press the sanding disc onto the plate.
(Save the peeled-off liner for reuse. Once the discs are removed/changed, save the disc, attach the removed liner).
Roughly how long is the vertical portion of the belt, between the table and the plastic guard at the top? Can the metal back plate behind the vertical belt be removed?
Mary A on Oct 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The distance between the table top and the plastic at the top is about 5". The plate behind the belt and above the table can be removed
Is the motor powerful enough to keep the sander from stopping when moderate pressure is applied when sanding? One of the reviews stated this was a problem and I have had a problem with this in the past with another brand.
Chris on May 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have used this sander for 6 months without any problem with it stopping under pressure - even enough pressure to burn hardwoods. A great little sander.
Is the belt direction reversable?
Paul R on Sep 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I not aware of any way to reverse the belt direction. Belts are made with arrows on the back to indicate the direction of travel. The reason is because the way the lap join is made. Ther is no switch to reverse the motor to make it go in reverse.
I want 80 grit & 120 grit belts?
Michael G on Nov 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You can find a variety of belts for this sander. There are a number of places on line that carry belts for this sander in the grits you require.
Does the belt plate tilt? if so, how many degrees?
c g on Dec 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: With the belt table sitting at 90 degrees to the belt, my table tilts down 24 degrees.
is there an accessory to use for sharpening lathe chisels and gouges?
Rick B on Sep 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: not to my knowledge. It's just what you see in the pictures
Is it variable speed ?
David H on Dec 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The speed is not variable. I have seen no need for changing the speed and enjoy using it as it is.
Has anyone tried using this for knife making?
MikeT on Dec 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: yes I have used this for knife making, It's a very versatile tool. It cuts and shapes quickly so be mindful of that. Use the platen area for flat areas and the area just above for rounding your material. Use the disc for squaring edges. Go slowly and take your time. It's easy to take more material off but very difficult to put it back on.
Does the Rikon 1"x30 belt/5" disc sander have an attachable dust collector?
Robert F on May 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It has two ports, one for the belt and one for the disk. Port sizes match the Rockler "small tool dust collector kit". Not sure if that name is correct but look for the 39.95 hose and adapter kit. FOUND IT!
Dust Right FlexiPort Power Tool Hose Kit, 3' to 12' Expandable
Dust Right FlexiPort Power Tool Hose Kit, 3' to 12' Expandable
What is the voltage of this item?
Doron S on May 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The motor is 120V rated, so the US standard 110-120V is the only option. Also, the plug is the 3 prong US type - round grounding, 2 parallel blades. The rikonyools dot com website has the specs and owner's manual. It is a very good, light duty sander. I especially like the belt - good access for odd shaped parts.
Just received but having difficulty attaching the belt sanding table. Following assembly insturctions the Sanding Belt Table Lock Handle hits the motor housing when trying to install the table. This allows only 1/2 turn or so and won't tighten the table. What am I doing wrong?
William R on Jan 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Figured this out when I discovered the handle can be removed from the bolt. Screw the bolt in and reinstall the handle.
Any problems with clamping each table in any position? I want to be sure that when I set any angle, that angle will remain constant, especially when in use.
Richard O on Apr 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It’s ok if you don’t put excess pressure. Does have a problem with moving.
How many amps is the motor?
Ned P on Mar 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This sander -has 1/3 HP , 2.3 amps, 3350 RPMs , no load.
What dust port do you use to connect to 2 1/2 in hose?
John R on Feb 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You will need an adapter to connect a hose that large in diameter.
what is the distance from the belt to the neck at the back ?
bill p on Feb 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The short answer is 4 3/8 inches at the level of the support surface. There is a piece of flat stock immediately behind the belt that can be removed by taking the two bolts securing it out, should you need max belt flexibility. The neck, as shown in the picture, has about 1 1/2 inches of height at the 4 3/8 distance before it comes forward.
What are the dust ports like on this item?
Stacy J on Dec 9, 2016

The dust ports with adapter fit my Craftsman wet dry vac no problem.
What sort of material is this made from? (knobs, guards, body, etc.) How would you rate the build of the item?
Stacy J on Dec 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The build is above average. The body is metal and the tables are aluminum. The knobs are heavy plastic.
I would like to use it for knife sharpening also...can you find belts in higher grit?
LARRY S on Dec 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Larry I have the same question. I plan to be at Rocklers soon seeking a finer belt.
How easy is it to change grits on the belt sander?
Grant F on Oct 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The belt is fairly easy to remove and replace. It is as easy as any of the competitors sanders that are on the market. To change the disc you need to remove the little aluminum plate that covers 1/2 of the disc. I used goof off or lacquer thinner to remove any stubborn glue on the 6" disc platen. Hope this helps, have a good day
