The Robert Sorby Sovereign Deluxe TurnMaster Kit delivers versatility, performance and efficiency in abundance. And with a set of three heads combined into one neat package along with the shank, two handle lengths, and a wide selection of cutters, you can enjoy that versatility at a fraction of the price of the separate components. The three easily attached heads can be fitted with specific cutters before beginning your turning project, allowing you to swap heads in a matter of seconds to achieve different cuts. The patented detachable heads offer indexing action that delivers three standard cuts. Seven interchangeable cutting tips and a standard full-length parting tool let you turn a huge variety of profiles.

Enjoy the versatility of the following components in one easy-to-use kit:

  • RSTM ST2 – TurnMaster shank with HSS detail point cutter fitted
  • RSTM Tip 1 Round (fitted to head) – a general purpose cutter, excellent for rapid removal of material
  • RSTM Tip 2 Detail Point (fitted to head and shank) – Excellent for roughing square to round when turning centers on spindle work
  • RSTM Tip 3 Square (fitted to head) – Used for generating square shoulders on tenons where a turned part is to be assembled into a hole, e.g. a chair leg. Also a great shear scraper
  • RSTM Tip 4 French Curve – Great for finishing out in egg cups, goblets and round bottomed boxes
  • RSTM Tip 5 Dovetail or box cutter – as the name suggests this tool is designed to create dovetails and tenons to mount timber on scroll chucks
  • RSTM Tip 6 Teardrop – Ideal for scraping and shear scraping inside forms
  • RSTM Tip 7 Mushroom – Designed for undercutting mushrooms but has many applications
  • RSTM HEAD (2) – Patented Indexable tool head specifically designed to operate in three positions for standard scraping and shear scraping work. Sit screws easily onto the tool shank to offer a quick and simple alternative for interchanging cutters
  • 830 Standard Parting Tool 1/4'' – for parting off work and great for detailing
  • Sovereign 12'' handle – multifaceted Softex grip handle
  • Sovereign 4'' extension – adds 4'' of length to the 12'' handle

Woodworking Experience:
Advanced
There's a bit of a learing curve as with a y tool that is new. For the most part I like it a lot, I didn't know it was all HS
I thought it was carbide. But thats ok I can repace some of the cutters as needed

Very high quality tools
Love the Turnmaster set BUT, for a recent beginner they could provide more basic detailed description of parts and their usage. Videos have helped the most, but hard copy really helps in the shop.

Excellent value when it was on sale
Complete set for introducing new turners to the art of wood turning. New turners are less intimidated using these turning tools versus conventional turning chisels. Can't go wrong with Sorby tools.

The quality of the toolset is very good. I think I will need to get the carbide cutters since my previous tools had them. In my case since I do mostly pens at the moment I should have noticed the reviews about the space needed on the tool rest since it is about 2 + inches from the turning project. In hindsight I should have bought the Rockler midi turning set. I think this would have been better for my turning. For those that turn bowls and larger items this set may be just fine.

What is the size of the screw on the RSTM - TH?
jrcollins56 on Sep 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Male thread on for accommodating handle is: 23.5mm slightly under an inch in diameter
female opening of the handle is:22mm. or .866 inches

I am not sure how this would equate to the Mx - thread size. Sometimes at hardware stores they have a female template that you can thread screws on to determine this exact size but this is rather big so I doubt this would be available in most stores.

Not sure what the person inquiring wants to do exactly but they could always by the product and setermine if what they want to do will work for their application/need.

I am not sure what that equates to in terms of the actual size of the bolt thread.
Whatever happened to the Sorby Sovereign hooded ring tools? They seem to have disappeared from the market. The current versions are basically scrapers. The original Sovereign tools I saw demonstrated about 5 years (or so) ago were hooded ring tools, and the knurled nut deftly controlled the protrusion of the cutter by precisely moving the hood in or out to control the depth of cut . Are they no longer in production?
Jim G on Jun 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not sure if the ring tool is still available, Sorby has the sovereign Ultima that has the depth adjustment you were describing. Fits the sovereign handle perfectly. I believe the ring tool would be a lot more difficult to sharpen or hone, whereas the ultima uses the round cutters
