Rockler Router Bit Center/Depth Gauge

Quickly set your router table fence a precise distance from the center of the bit—also works as a depth gauge for bits and blades.

When setting up your router table or freehand router, there are two primary adjustments to make: the fence distance and the bit height. Our Center/Depth Gauge makes setting both easy and accurate. Just set the hairline indicator for the distance you need from the fence to the center of the bit, hook it onto the bit shank, then slide the fence over until it touches the gauge. To use it as a height gauge, simply set it at your bit height, lay the foot flat on the table and raise the bit until it touches the arm. Half-round notches let you register the gauge to the center of 1/4'' and 1/2'' shank router bits. Alternatively, you can use the ''depth'' portion to measure to the edge of the cutter, rather than the middle of the shank.

Features:

  • Easily set your router table fence a precise distance from the center of your router bit—ideal for routing dados and flutes
  • Also doubles as a height gauge for setting the heights of router bits and blades
  • Half-round notches register to the center of 1/4'' and 1/2'' shanks
  • Broad foot rests against router table fence, and is offset so the fence opening isn't a problem
  • Hairline indicator adjusts for dead-on accuracy
  • 12'' long steel ruler features metric and imperial measurements
  • Nylon-tipped knurled knob secures gauge without marring ruler
  • (1) Rockler Router Bit Center/Depth Gauge

Hi, does it have any magnets built in?
Randy F on Aug 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, the foot and sidearm are plastic, with metal hardware and ruler. The metal parts will attach to a magnet but are not independently magnetic.
Is there a minimum distance this tool will measure? Can you set it to say, 1/64 from center?
Tim A on Aug 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: the answer is 2 fold. No there is no minimum and yes you "could" set it @ 1/64th from center...however.
The gauge will go to flush or zero with the fence or table. The ruler markings are in 1/16th and millimeter increments except the first inch is in 1/32nds. The gauge has a flat edge for setting edge depth, along with the 1/4 & 1/2 hollows for center measures.
I seem to most often want to position the fence from the edge of the cut, not the center of the tool. Am I not seeing something important here?
Ed O on Aug 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: diameter of the bit varies, center is always in the same place, add or subtract bit radius for edge of cut line
The cursor in the picture looks well back of the center. It also looks like it is adjustable. Does the center point have to be found and the cursor adjusted to center before the gauge can be used as intended?
Joe M on Aug 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: If you look at the pictures, you can see the ruler starts at 0, but there's an offset from the fence measurement because of the foot that squares up with the fence. I would guess the offset of the cursor is set up to negate the offset of the foot.
