Rockler Stainless Steel Ice Cream Scoop Hardware Kit

An attractive, polished look and hefty feel make this scoop a hot commodity for dishing up cold treats.

When your ice cream seems more like ice than cream, reach for our stainless steel scoop, which has the heft to cut through the hardest freeze. The contours of the scoop are thoughtfully designed to turn out smooth, round scoops of ice cream. Stainless steel is also the most corrosion-resistant choice of material for an ice cream scoop, and it boasts a fine polished look that displays beautifully. Turn your own handle on the lathe for a customized gift, or keep it for your own kitchen. Turning blank not included.

  • Includes a 5/16-18 threaded insert—simply drill a hole in your blank, thread in the insert, and thread the scoop onto the turned handle
  • Made from stainless steel for the ultimate in corrosion resistance
  • For the handle, we recommend a strong hardwood such as maple, cherry, walnut, oak, or yellow birch. Of the imported hardwoods bubinga, purpleheart, gongola alves and cocobolo make wonderful handles
(1) Ice Cream Scoop with Threaded Stud
(1) 5/16-18 Threaded Insert

As a wood turner I am always looking for a new project. Also, I really needed a better ice cream scoop, one that could burrow into some deeply frozen Trader Joe’s mint chip. I’m pretty sure this one will do the job.

My daughter made a handle at school. She needed something to put on that handle. A google search led us to this site which had the best price for a seemingly durable product. We're eager to see if it holds up to its description.

Good seller at craft shows. Disassembly feature is a selling point.
Dave L on Apr 4, 2019
I turn these to sell at craft fairs. I really prefer this style as the consumer can unscrew the scoop part from the handle so the wood does not get submerged in the sink or dishwasher.

I want to make this kit with an acrylic blank. Would a 1/2" hole be appropriate to drill and epoxy the insert in?
Mark Stahley on Nov 20, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The insert is tapered and measures at 37/64ths at its widest. I've not worked with acrylic so I hope this is helpful. Also, the insert looks brassy so if you acrylic is transparent you may want to get one that matches the scoop. They would have those at a Home Depot or like store. Best of luck
How easy will the handle break if made of acrylic?
James C on Oct 14, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have turned a number of these in acrylic. Three are being used by family members so I'd be made aware of any problems. They hold up fine. Using a 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 6" blank I turn the the scoop end to about 1 1/8" diameter. I find that in acrylic that the 1/2" diameter hole for the threaded insert is good so as not to stress or crack the acrylic while screwing the insert in. Once threaded in, unscrew it and epoxy the insert in permanently. Another possibility would be to not use the threaded insert at all and epoxy the threaded scoop directly to the handle. There would be more acrylic then for strength. My acrylic handles have been through the dishwasher many times and still look good. Just a note here is that I made a pizza cutter handle out of acrylic and the user dropped it on concrete. The handle did break, but not at the cutter end. Acrylic is more brittle then wood in that regard. Good luck. Sounds like you may be getting a start on Christmas gifts.
purchased the ice cream scoop kit, my question is: what is the allen wrench for??
linda a on Dec 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: One end of the threaded insert has the fitting for the hex (allen) wrench. Use the wrench to screw in the threaded insert into the handle.
Is there a part number for the threaded insert?
James C on Dec 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Not that I know of...... Replacing the part that comes in the package is a problem I go to the most complete hardware store and just paw around.
