Roto-Hinges
I used 3/4" Roto-Hinges on TV Trays based on a Woodsmith plan. The hinges fit snugly into a 3/4" forstner bit hole. I like that there is no hinge pin showing after final assembly.

Nothing else I've found works as well.
Use them to make TV trays. They are blind, and don't show. Extremely easy to use, just drill hole and glue in.

Roto Hinges are used in several of Tom Fidgen's book The Unplugged Woodshop, and Made by Hand. Once you understand how to use these, they are remarkable!

Mostly because Lee Valley, though less expensive, could not handle the processing step. Gave them three chances....blew them all. Came here and got things on the first try. Go figure.

The hinges supplied are all oversize by at least 1/64" to almost 1/32" (i.e., between 15 and 30 mils too large). Any suggestions for the best way to mill them down to 3/4"? I don't want to dry them pre-install, because after glueing, with normal moisture content, they're likely to expand and split out the wood.
Peter H on Sep 21, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I posted this question a while ago, and now figured out a solution. Hold one end, and press the free end gently against a ribbon sander. The free cylinder spins rapidly, but abrasion uniformly occurs and you can mill down the wooden cylinder to spec (or slightly under).
Can I use these to make folding stairs? For example - where the step portion folds flat.
Heather H on Sep 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, I do not think so. I got them for box hinges and they seem to work fine - mine are the 3/8" size. I do not think they are anything like strong enough to bear the weight of a person.
How deep is each side of the 3/8" hinge? Will they penetrate 1/2" thick material?
James M on Dec 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I used the 3/4" hinges which may be different depths than the 3/8". Each half of the hinge is 1/2" deep, including the hardware (axle, washer and rivet). I found mine in stock at my local store, who might be able to answer the question for the 3/8" size over the phone.
Using these for cribbage boards. Do they need to be glued in? If so, wood glue/CA/something else?

Thanks
Michael L on Nov 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I used Tite Bond, and my brother used Gorilla Glue and we both have had no issues.
Is the steel rivet the same size for all of these or does it scale with the plug size?
Ron S on May 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Sorry, I cannot answer your question, as I just bought one size to fit TV trays I was making. I really didn't know there are other sizes available. Jim
