Sr1 Replacement Cutter for Pen and Mini Carbide Turning Tools, Square Radius

Replacement Square Radius Cutter for our corresponding Mini and Pen Turning Ergonomic Carbide Turning Tools.
Item #
47377
Rating:
94% of 100

Take a close look at the edge of this carbide insert and you'll realize it's not actually square. Instead, each of its four edges is slightly crowned with a 2'' radius. This subtle change makes the cutter excellent for smoothing cuts. Use it with the corresponding Rockler Mini Ergonomic Carbide Turning Tool (#49804, sold separately) or with the square radius tool included in our 3-Piece Pen Turning Set (#47600, sold separately). No sharpening required — just rotate to a new edge when the previous edge gets dull, and replace the cutter when needed.

Features:

  • Crowned edges for smooth finishing cuts
  • Solid carbide for a long life
  • Factory sharpened—ready for use right out of the box

When it starts tearing the wood, it's past time for a new cutter. This one made mine cut like new again.

Perfect fit replacement or upgrade
I bought this cutter to replace the original straight cutter that came with my mini turning tool. It fits perfectly.

Works very well. Stays sharp long especially when working wood blanks. When it feels dull, I just loosen the set screw and turn the cutter to a new edge and re-tighten the screw. It just takes a second and I'm ready to go again. Easy to replace the cutter when all the edges are dull. It would be helpful if the edges were numbered to make it easier to keep track of the dull edges. I use a marker to highlight the used edge when I change it.

So easy - no sharpening needed
These make turning so easy. When the turning gets a little tough, I simply unscrew the cutter, make a quarter turn, rescrew and I'm back in business.

While the quality seems equal, the Rockler replacement cutter is considerably more expensive than a comparable part for Easy Wood tool.

I bought this set and wondered if the 1/2" square radius cutter will fit either the square or round handle? Or do I have to buy another handle for the radius cutter?

Mini Ergonomic Carbide Turning Tools, 3-Piece Set
BEST ANSWER: The description in the catalog says it will fit the mini carbide square or the pen carbide square and NOT the full sized one. I didn't want to change out all the time, so I just bought the complete handle and cutter combo. I already had the mini carbide set which I use most of the time
will this fit the Rockler Mini carbide tool?
Bruce P on Oct 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes it will fit and it prevents catches due to the slight radius.
I use it all the time!
Hope this helps you Bruce.

BEST ANSWER: These are carbide cutters, no way to sharpen them. Replace them when they're dull.
Why is this cutter not compatible with other shafts using 1/2" cutters?
Darryl B on Dec 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It doesn't say that it doesn't fit other 1/2" carbide turning tools. It says clearly in the description that it doesn't fit a standard square square turning tool. That's because a standard square turning tool will only accept flat square cutters. This cutter has a 2" radius arc on all four sides. Therefore a "standard" meaning a flat square only type of turning tool can not use this type of cutter. There are many turning tools that will accept different types of square cutters. Some turning tools will accept square, round, diamond, curved and many more. All in only one tool.
