  • This item: Stanley® Sweetheart™ 8-Pc. Socket Chisel Set $209.99

Stanley's premium Sweetheart™ 16-793 8-Pc. Socket Chisel Set is based on Stanley's classic 750 Series chisel design, making this collection an instant classic! Socket chisels are less likely to break than tang chisels, but the socket design makes it very easy to replace the stock handle with one you've turned for a custom, comfortable grip. All chisels are 9" long. Honing recommended before use.

Features:
  • Socket-style handles are easily replaceable - use with your own custom turned handle or add a long handle for paring
  • Hornbeam handles provide a comfortable, well-balanced feel that transfers energy effectively when struck by a mallet
  • Large sweet spot for striking accuracy
  • English tool steel blades are made from high-carbon chrome steel and ideal for woodworkers
  • Sweetheart chisels sharpen easily and retain a razor-sharp edge over long periods of use
  • Side bevels are extra narrow for working in tight corners when precise cuts are critical

Good chisels turned great with a bit of work.
I bought a 1" chisel to try out before buying the whole set. The steel has been properly heat treated allowing the chisels to hone up sharp and hold an edge for a reasonable amount of work. The ergonomics are great, the same feel as a vintage set of Stanley 750s which I also own. The lands on the sides are too thick for dovetails. I fixed this by grinding the lands thinner by running my belt sander upside-down and carefully holding the chisels on top using the side bevels as my flat reference. Took about three hours to do the whole set, swapping out chisels as I went to prevent overheating. The backs were all fairly flat so it only took about 5 min a chisel to do a final sharpening.

great value, know what you are buying
I read some of these reviews and suspect the buyers were not certain of what they were purchasing, or how it compares to other options on the market. First of all, you can expect the handles to be loose and fall out... a symptom of socket style handles and properties of wood as it dries or retains moisture. The benefit of this style is that handles come on and off quickly for sharpening and are easy to fabricate replacements should you desire.

The chisels do take significant work to flatten the back and prep for use, but once done it is easy to re-hone an edge and they will last you a lifetime. I have a variety of different brands of chisels and all of them required some attention (including my Lie Nielsen and Veritas tools. granted these Stanley chisels did take more time to prepare than these other brands, but not so significant that I feel the price wasn't a bargain. Using a proper setup and working your way through the grits, I would consider that I spent no more than 15 minutes per chisel to get to the final stage for use. Prep them as you need them and the impact of setup will be minimal.

Remember that in this package you are getting 8 chisels for $229 at the time of this review... so roughly $29 each. compare this to other premium brands you you pay anywhere from $40 to $75 dollars per chisel. At this low price, a little extra work to prepare the tool is a bargain when the end result is a tool that will last you forever.

Actually disappointed. Took considerable effort to flatten the backs and hone (deep grind marks) on the bevels. When I took the chisels out of the pouch for the first time , four of the eight handles came off in my hand...none of them fit properly in the sockets...as I said, disappointed. I should have taken note of the Stanley # 4 plane I purchased a few months ago. The sole looked like it could be used as a tank tread. Took considerable effort to both flatten and polish it. I admit every tool takes some effort to 'tune it up ' when first purchased, but these two examples were ridiculous. Wonder if you received any other negative reviews.Surprised that Rockler allows their vendors to ship such poor products.I have been woodworking for 45+ years.

The chisel handle is very small and fits loosely into a conical socket at the base of the chisel. The handle is so loose it comes free with almost no force. I tried pounding the chisel into a block of oak to set the handle in the socket but it comes apart. I will ask Rockler for a return. Btw I have been aRockler customer for many years and have never complained or returned anything

I've read reviews that after a little sharpening/truing these should be a good compromise between high end handmade tools and what the big box stores carry.

I currently have a Marples set but wanted to upgrade and these looked to be a definite step up.

Value and high praise in reviews.

I wanted a set of chisels that would work well in my hand without a mallet. It seemed like these would be more comfortable in my hand.
