Volt King 12-Gauge Cord Reels

Pull out only as much cord as you need, then quickly retract it with a light tug on the end of the cord.

Item #
86% of 100

The Volt King 12-gauge self-retracting cord reel lets you pull out as much of the extension cord as you need, then retract it neatly with a quick tug on the end of the cord. It features three outlets at the end of the cord, a 180° swiveling design and an impact-resistant polypropylene case. The ball-style cord stop is adjustable so that any length of cord can be left trailing after it is retracted. Rid yourself of tangles and the hassle of recoiling a traditional extension cord with the Volt King cord reel.

  • Includes brackets for mounting on wall or ceiling
  • Swivels 180° to avoid stress on the cord
  • Cord retracts smoothly and easily, without twists or tangles
  • Impact-resistant polypropylene case
  • 12/3 SJT 15-amp electrical cord with three 120V outlets
  • Overload protection switch shuts down power in case of overload to protect your tools
  • Lead-in cord lets you locate the reel up to 4.5' away from an outlet
  • For indoor use

How to Operate:

  • The cord reels have a ratchet wheel lock which will only lock at the certain points but not able to lock arbitrarily.
  • Check the reel for correct operation by slowly pulling out the cord. A ''clicking'' noise will be heard every half revolution of the drum.
  • To latch the reel, pull out the cord then allow it to retract after hearing the first, second, or third ''click''.
  • To unlatch the reel, slowly pull out the cord until the “clicking” noise stops then, holding on to the cord, let it retract in a controlled way until the cord stop rests against the cord guide rollers.

Shiiping in it's own package / Damaged when received
Seems like a pretty decent product from the look and feel, but shipping in its on display package isn't a very bright idea. I could hear something loose inside housing, and when trying to retract cord and see if it works, I found it would not catch and was obviously a broken reel brake that is floating around loose. Shame, because it does look and feel quality

Woodworking Experience:
I have a very small, one car garage shop, with only two wall outlets. Up until this point, I ran a 12 gauge extension cord along the ground from one of those wall outlets, and have been able to operate all of my power tools (Benchtop planner, jointer, drill press, bandsaw, table saw, miter saw, etc.) with no issues. I purchased this reel planning to centrally mount it on the shop ceiling in order to protect the power cord, and generally keep things tidier. With the unit mounted and the table saw and shop vac plugged in, I set off to rip some lumber for the current project. After ripping about 12 inches of dug fir, the reel's internal 15A safety tripped and shut down the saw and shop vac. I reset the switch, and turned on only the saw this time; no shop vac. I got about 24 inches further along and then it tripped again. Annoyed, I plugged the table saw back into the wall outlet, and finished the cut.

I can't be too mad because the reel is rated for 15A and my table saw is a 15A saw. I should have done more research before I purchased this unit. However, I write this as a warning to anyone who may want to do the same thing I was attempting to do. This reel will NOT handle anything over 15A, so if you plan on using it for anything beyond that, don't waste your money.

My only other complaint is that the female outlets on the reel are very loose, and will drop the cord of whatever tool is plugged into it with the slightest tug.

Woodworking Experience:
less than a year in use - and now useless
Loved this thing, for the brief time that it worked! Very convenient. Did a ceiling mount and it made it easier to work in my shop and connect various tools.

However, spending $100 for less than a year of use seems a bit excessive. Went down the morning to do a bit of work and the red breaker light is on, and the reset button doesn't work. If I could find a way to buy a new reset button it would help, but that doesn't appear to be an option.

Is the cord a soft flexible plastic? Does it get stiff in cold weather? My space is not heated.
LAWRENCE K on Dec 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have this cord handler in my garage and it is unheated. The cord is of good quality and will remain flexible when the temperature in my garage is 50 degrees F. I live in Houston TX so it does not get super cold here but I believe that this cord would remain flexible down to freezing temperatures. I hung my device from the ceiling and the stop device does not work well in this position. I have a clamp I use to keep the cord out.
If attached to the ceiling, how far down does the cord hang when retracted?
Bryce on Mar 1, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Shortest is 18" but will depend on where the cord stop is placed.
Does this reel have a cord feeder (leveler) to prevent bunching?
erndog66 on May 5, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Not that I can tell.. it does bunch sometimes but a quick tug and holding the cord at a different angle usually solves it. Overall it’s a huge timesaver.
Can the be mounted outside?
Zak D on Apr 17, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I would recommend not mounting outdoors where the elements can come in contact. The openings can potentially allow rain to fill the casing and come into contact with any internal connections. Also, the casing may not stand up to UV rays from the sun over time, causing the casing to become brittle and possibly break.
What's that Watt Capacity?
Terry Z on May 8, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The cord is a 12/3 cord. The specification on this reel is 15 amps at 125 volts. Given the research I did, this would equate to 1875 watts
Is this 15 Amp rated Reel Cord UL listed?

Where is this manufactured?
Ben M on Apr 2, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This product is Made in China
