A fun and easy project. A...
A fun and easy project. A few comments: 1. Although Rockler recommends using the Sierra pen, ANY single pen kit that uses recommends 27/64" drill for the tube will work. I happened to have one from another manufacturer and it worked fine. 2. The instructions recommend using the 3 rubber bands that come with the inlay kit. There are several VERY small parts, though, so to be on the safe side, I used not only the rubber bands, but some sewing thread wrapped tightly around the barrel. I feel that this gave more uniform compression on the kit while gluing up, and was more likely to keep all the very small parts from falling out. The thread scraped off easily while on the lathe. 3. Get a pair of forceps to install the small pieces. It'll make your life a lot easier. 4. After scraping off the thread and excess CA glue, I hardly needed to use any tools. In fact, I noticed that my skew chisels were tearing out a bit on the curly maple, so really, most of the shaping was with sandpaper, starting with 80 grit and working up to 600 grit. All in all, simple, lots of fun, and I'm now ready to try some more challenging and expensive! of the inlay pen kits.

I seem to be spending a lot of time at the lathe.

I am a hobbyist woodworker/woodturner and this pen reflects that for my personal use. It may bring some commissions as I use and show it.
