Adirondack Chair Downloadable Plan

When we first saw this rustic Adirondack pine chair we were intrigued with the idea, but we also had some doubts. With the steeply angled back and long curved seat both slatted, how comfortable could the chair be? Well, much to our surprise, it is very comfortable. As a lawn or patio chair, it is something like a chaise lounge, allowing you to stretch out and relax. The wide arms are ideal for that paper plate picnic lunch and a tall glass of lemonade. Best of all, the chair is easy to make.

Very easy to follow instructions and material list. All that's necessary is a basic knowledge of woodworking and the proper tools.

Great chairs, so-so instructions
Print quality was so-so, and several measurements were very difficult to read. The instructions provide great cutting instructions, but virtually no assembly instructions. I found assembly to be very time consuming and awkward. Even after two chairs, there are still a few things I would do differently during assembly. But, hey... it's still worth $1. Love the end product (even with those few assembly mistakes). They are very comfortable and look great.

Exactly what I was looking for.
This is very comfortable chair. I made slight modifications by using thicker cedar stock and strategically placed pocket holes to hide some of the hardware, but otherwise followed the design. I have received many compliments on these chairs.

Good luck trying to follow these plans
I thought that these plans were a waste of time. I wanted more dimensions, the text was hard to read, etc.

However, I bought the plans with templates which are available in the Rockler store and they were very good and enabled me to build the chair. Still not easy but manageable.

Yes these are only plans.
Incomplete and confusing plans. Several areas you are left guessing what to do. Very much NOT for beginners. These plans are for expert woodwoorkers who can probably build this without using any plans.

Can the plans be downloaded onto my IPAD?
Joseph G on Jan 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I can't answer with certainty. I downloaded to my PC. This is really a technical question about iPad functionality and better asked in a technical forum about how to use an iPad.. Being able to print the plans from the iPad seems like it should be a high priority, and that is another question to ask in a technical forum.
what rormat are the downloadable plans in? tks,len
Ken W on Apr 3, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Plans consist of drawings with text explanations. They are more like shop drawings. There are directions for building necessary jigs in order to easily build some tricky parts. A reprint of a 2010 Woodworker's Journal Magazine with no audio.
Is this a kids chair?
Len F on May 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't believeit is. I actually didn't use it in favor of the plans with template included. An ADK chair is a relatively complex project and the templates make a big difference. They are worth the extra price - and the first thing you do is make plywood or hardboard copies of them because they won't stand up to repeated use without getting damaged. They are cardboard.
Does this chair have a curved back? I can't tell from the picture.
James B on Mar 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the back is curved. It has a 15.5" radius where it contacts the seat, and a 23" radius at armrest level.
does this have the cut list and material list?
brent on Oct 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I bought the plan in May of this year and, using it, made several chairs. The plan does contain a Bill of Materials in table form that provides all the necessary cuts. I found the plan easy to follow and the directions clearly written. You may find (at least, I did) that I had to enlarge some drawings to read the angles for several cuts.
dose this chair fold ?
Sally M on Feb 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. It's strength comes from the fact that there are multiple points of fastening on most surfaces. It's rock solid, but cannot fold.
Has anyone modified the plan to make this a folding chair?
Charles P on Jul 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Not me. Adapting it to a folding chair would require considerable re-working of the overall design and probably eliminate a number of parts (like front armrest supports), and I'm not sure the modified chair will fold properly and still have the same strength. The as-is design is especially strong and comfortable. Probably better to find plans for a folding chair.
I can't download for some reason using Mac book pro version 10.15.3?
i B on Mar 26, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I downloaded it from an iMac without a problem. Sorry, looks like I can't be any help to you.
Can someone who has made this chair tell me dimensions from front of seat to the furthest point in the back? Basically, if you touch the back to a wall, how far from the wall is the front edge of the seat?
Ryan A on Aug 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Go to the nearest Rockler store or order the kit that comes with detailed dimensions and, better yet, full size templates.
