Cherry Turning Blanks
I only purchased 2 blanks. These are large enough to make the large pepper mills which I often give as gifts to friends and family.

One of the two is flawless, he other has about 1/2 inch of white on one full side, which I will work around.

Made for some beautiful handles for a set of knives and a cleaver I made . Some natural stain and wax furniture polish made them shine!

Is this blank ready to use?
Martin H on Sep 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, generally speaking if a blank is coated in wax it should be considered green and either turned to final thickness and allowed to warp, or dried before using. If just the ends are waxed it could be either but most likely is fairly dry and ok to use. It cherry blanks I purchased from the Rockler store were dry and turned well.
I want to make some wooden kitchen utensils such as spoons and spatulas. I would like a decent length 12 to 18 inches long. Any suggestions?

BEST ANSWER: Any hardwood will suffice. My own favorite believe it or not, is box elder. Mine have stood up wonderfully, even with the occasional trip thru the dishwasher!.
Most of the wood I source comes from firewood.
It is seasoned and needs only to be cut or split to you.
I wouldn’t focus on exotic woods - many are toxic. I hope this helps!
