CNC Shark II

Features a heavy-duty router mount for 2-1/4 HP routers, plus much more!
Item #
80% of 100

Whether you're just getting started in the world of CNC, or you're looking for a smaller machine capable of high-level work, the Shark II is a sharp contender. With XYZ travel of 13'' x 25'' x 7'', it's capable of machining small- to medium-sized signs, carvings and furniture components. The Shark II features a touch-screen pendant controller and the same rugged gantry design as the HD4. It also has NEMA 23 stepper motors, which permit the use of larger routers, up to 2-1/4 HP. The increased Z travel of 7'' means the Shark II is compatible with the 4th axis (#59496, sold separately; software upgrade required). Other improvements include a metal back plate for increased rigidity, and an interlocking aluminum table with rigid channels for fast, flexible clamping.

  • Touch-screen pendant controlled software package with color graphics
  • Detachable, rotating cradles allow different attachments and height configurations
  • Enhanced hardware controller with expansion ports and pendant ability
  • Automatic on and off software control of router/spindle system
  • X & Y homing capability
  • Compatible with all HD line accessories
  • Virtual Zero software maps the topography of your table or workpiece, solving problems caused by warping or bowing
  • Anti-backlash, wear-compensated direct drive lead screws on all axes
  • Handles routers up to 2-1/4 HP, such as the Porter Cable 890 series, Bosch 1617 series or the water cooled spindle from Next Wave Automation
  • Interlocking aluminum table with rigid channels for fast, flexible clamping
  • 120V System plugs into standard wall outlet
  • Includes Vcarve Desktop Design Software ($349 Retail Value), Vector Art 3D Sampler Pack, and CNC Shark control software with Virtual Zero technology
  • Over sixty 3D STL files included, ($150 Retail Value)
  • Download free project plans from Vectric
  • One year warranty on parts and labor, special shipping exclusions apply
  • You supply a PC computer with USB 2.0 port and any of the routers listed below
  • Not compatible with Mac computers

Great out of the box
I've only used the Shark II for a couple of weeks, but I can say that it has been great right out of the box. Being a rookie to CNC, I spent a few weeks learning the V-Carve software through their online tutorials. Doing so allowed me to get up and operational immediately on the software side. The hardware is solid and for the smaller pieces I'm going to be doing, the Shark II was a perfect fit. There's no flexing in the gantry or the carriage when operating. I would recommend to those buying to research the problems people have encountered with the Shark II and larger Shark HD. I noticed most issues were user error (not updating firmware and/or drivers) and not a function of the actual equipment. I'm looking forward to many, many years of fun with this tool.

Woodworking Experience:
Great Customer Service from Both Rockler and Next Wave
Bought the machine and ran it very hard for a year. I bought the 1 year warranty. Board went out 3 days after warranty had expired. Thought "oh well I should have bought the 2 year." Called Next Wave and they gave me the choice of sending it to get a board or they could send me the board and I could replace. AT NO CHARGE. Great customer service!

Woodworking Experience:
Next Wave Automation CNC Shark II
I am very impressed with the quality of the hardware and ease of assembly. Currently, I am trying out all the features of the hardware and software. The unit includes V-Carve Desktop ready to go upon installation. Fortunately, a user group for this CNC just started up on Facebook, a big plus for leaning all the tricks to accomplish your creative woodworking desires. I would certainly recommend this model for the first time buyer.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Bridges the gap between a hobby CNC and a pro CNC. Biggest plus for me is the pendant. No need for a laptop in the shop. Comes in a couple boxes. Just slap the gantry and router mount on it (about 20 min) and your good-to-go. Plus, this thing is lightweight. Had the wife help me bring it into the shop no problem. If you are on the fence, then hop over. You'll be pleased with what you can do with this unit.

CNC Shark II
The machine is awesome. I have adapted to the VCarve software quickly with the help of the many videos available on line and from VCarve. So why only 3 stars, you might ask? I am upset and frustrated with Next Wave Automation for several reasons. 1.) there is little to no---information from the point you save the " .tap" file to when the project is completed. Mostly the steps needed to use the pendant well, and how to use the included apps. 2.) I sent 2 messages to the support email address for answers (4 days apart) and they responded to the first one within 24 hrs, very helpful, and fully answered my question. On contact # 2, it's been 8 days now, with no answer. I guess you only get 1 question a month. Very frustrated at this point.

Woodworking Experience:
Worst service ever, so far
I received my Shark II a week ago. I still have no idea how it will work, because they didn't include the router cradle, so I can't actually use it. Today, I received the box with the router cradle, but it didn't include the clamping mechanism to hold the router in place! So I guess it will be another week before I find out if they can manage to leave off another critically important piece. Color me very, very UNimpressed so far.

Will this machine work with a 4th axis?
David H on Jan 31, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The Shark II is compatible with the 4th axis (#59496, sold separately; software upgrade required).
Can a water cooled spindle be used with this machine?
Tom N on Aug 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes it can
Does a computer have to be connected while operating the machine?
Matt B on Apr 8, 2020
BEST ANSWER: No. Files created with your computer from the included software can be saved to a flash drive. The flash drive plugs into a USB port on one of the machine components (referred to as the pendant). You then can operate the machine using the keyboard on the pendant.

I recommend you purchase the book "CNC Router Essentials" by Johnson and Vondriska if you need an introduction to CNC routing. I refer to it all of the time, and their examples use the "pro" version of the same software that comes with the machine.
what kind of mount is required? can i simply purchase the dewalt 618 motor to pair with this, or do i need to have some style of base?
Jacob B on Mar 6, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The mount is included with the CNC. No other components are required as long as you use one of the recommended routers. I use a Bosch 1617EVS router and it fits perfectly. After attaching the router plug it into the auxilary power outlet on the back of the CNC controller box so that the CNC can start and stop the router and adjust the speed. If you plug the router into any outher electrical outlet you will have to manually turn the router on aand off.
Can you use a laser on it?
Philip W on Jan 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes wave automation offers a laser attachment for this machine. They have a 2.2 watt laser and a 7 watt laser that attaches to the router like a router bit. If you can afford it buy the 7 watt as the 2.2 watt does not have enough power in my opinion.
How hard is it to learn the v carve software?
I have a cbc background from Of Donald Douglas Aircraft but that was years ago. Don't know how sharp I am any more. Also I'm not the best on a computer. Thanks for any
David W on Feb 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I found the vcarve software reasonably straightforward if you view the video tutorials available to download. You should definitely view these, and try to practice the skills demonstrated. Also assume that you will waste the first few, so plan to use inexpensive wood initially
What is the difference between the Shark 2 and the shark Hd4?
Michael O on Mar 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The shark II is only 13" wide and the shark HD4 is 24" wide. That's only difference I know of.
will this cnc machine act as both a router and planner?
Jordan T on Jul 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Rockler does not carry a CNC Planer per se.

Most CNC routers are capable of planing operations, such as flattening the spoilboard or correcting an uneven project surface, but it may not be the most efficient use of the machine.
Can the CNC Shark ll be extended for Z axis to 10” instead of 7”?
Judy Boobar on Sep 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It won't be easy but I think it could be done. Contact wave automation and get their opinion since they make them.
Which router do you suggest using for the Shark II? The Overview said, it was up to 2-1/4 HP.
Albert P on Mar 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The Shark II will accommodate the Porter Cable 890, the Bosch 1617 or the DeWalt 618. All of these are 2 1/4 H.P. and fit the Shark II router mount.
