Convertible Step Stool & Chair Downloadable Plan

Item #
74% of 100
Over the years, one of our most requested projects has been the step stool/chair. Readers have referred to it as a library chair, a convertible chair, a folding step chair, and a host of other things, but whatever they called it, the function was the same: a chair that quickly converted into a little step stool.

Great Project
This will be a great project. My Grandmother had one of these chairs when my brother and I were growing up.

great chair.
The plans are good but the cutout is small and have to blowup and tape to get close. The measurements in the plans helped so all in all should be a great project. I would recommend it to a friend even for the short fall it is worth the money.

I built some shelves for my granddaughter and she needs a step stool. I’m also planning to build her a small desk and this would serve both purposes.
Chalmers S on Apr 14, 2020
You would spend hours trying to come up with or duplicate a pattern such as this so for only 1 dollar it is a no brainer.

which issue is convertible step stool in?
Gary B on Mar 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Published in Woodworker’s Journal September/October 1992
I love the concept but what is the measurement from front to back at the base when configured in the step stool position?
A shopper on Jul 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It is 18 1\2" front to back at the floor when open to step stool.
I am a beginner. What tools would I need to make this?
Ingrid k on May 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Saber saw whould be a big help. This would let you cut all curves and cut outs. Drill and bit to make holes to start cut outs so you can get blade of saw in. Sand paper and a lot of patients I am a retired carpenter and cabinet maker so I seldom think about what tools I need. I have a complete shop.
Of course the more tools you have the easier and quicker you can turn out projects.

For a beginner wood worker I would recommend the following tools if you have space to work--
* small table saw
* saber saw
* drill and bits
* tape measure
* hammer
* finish sander
* circular saw
* square ( both large and small )
* impact driver ( you can buy this and drill in cord less sets and are
very useful for many projects )
* router and starter set of bits
These are just a few tools, I could go on and on but you can build about anything with these.

Good luck, Jack
ps, wood smith and shop notes magazines are a great reference source for projects and shop aids.
is the plan full size ?
michael b on Dec 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The plans are not full size. The plan is for the upper and lower side pieces, the back of the chair, and the dimensions of the steps. In order to get it to size, you have to magnify a copy by 105% then separating the two major pieces, you need to magnify the pieces by 200%. This will provide you with half of the plan that you require. Then copy the upper and lower sides to complete the upper and lower sides along with the back. These instructions were on the video that was online.
How can I download aplan for this?
Rutvik P on Jun 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: pay for the download and download it
These chairs are fun to make, but with use c ok mes th he problem of durability. I need to find stronger hinges. Does Rockler sell the hinges for this chair or are you on your own?
Lillee on May 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Rockler does sell piano hinges. I have not heard of this problem before. There may be some out there that are more heavy duty.
Why can't I pay and download the plans to Australia??
Crankie on May 29, 2020
BEST ANSWER: There should be no reason why you couldn't use a credit card for the purchase and download of the plans. We accept payment using MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover Card. If you do not wish to send your credit card information over the Internet, choose either Call in Credit Card, or Fax or Mail Order when you are on the Payment Options page. The click the Submit Order button. On the next page, which shows your order summary, you can then do one of the following:
Are these plans 1:1 scale, or do you have to enlarge?
Dean B on Nov 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You have to enlarge them. However, the plans come with a grid pattern that translates to one inch squares on a full-sized base (i.e., the board you're going to cut). So, if you buy a translucent overlay with a pattern of one inch squares to place atop your board, you can transfer the cutting diagram to a full-sized pattern on the workpiece for cutting.
Do the plans have the measurements?
Robert S on Aug 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this plan has measurements and a cut list
when in the stepstool position how high is the very top step?
A shopper on Apr 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The top horizontal surface is 33 1/2 inches from the floor when the project is in the step stool configuration.
