Convertible Step Stool & Chair Downloadable Plan
Convertible Step Stool & Chair Downloadable Plan
Over the years, one of our most requested projects has been the step stool/chair. Readers have referred to it as a library chair, a convertible chair, a folding step chair, and a host of other things, but whatever they called it, the function was the same: a chair that quickly converted into a little step stool.

Easy to follow convertible chair plans
I love the plans. They are the easiest to follow that I've run across. I plan on building it later this summer.

upsizing plan
Take plan to an office supply store and have upsized to 1" squares. Then go to Amazon and buy carbon paper for woodworking (cheap). Now use a stylis will the round ball ends to trace pattern on your wood (this will not tear your plan like a ballpoint pen would).Other than that a plunge router makes it easier to do the routing.I also made a guide with 2 lengths of wood with cross peices on each end spaced for the router bushing and clamped in place to get a nice straight slot to fit the peices in.

easy to use
I have been looking for this pattern for years. It is easy to use and the price was right. The one board concept is great.

Fun first project
This was my first hardwoods furniture project. The plans were simple but the only thing that could be better was the scaling of the drawings. It is quite a project to take the 8 1/2 x 11 page and bring it to full size. I burned through a lot of copy time and paper trying to get it right, and the blown up image was VERY pix-elated and so the lines were pretty vague.. The other issue was it starts with a 12' 1 x 12. This is too long to get home in one piece but I wasn't sure where to cut it so as not to intersect one of the components. I opted for 2ea 6' 1 x 12' boards but in the end came up a bit short and had to supplement the final step board from some older cutoffs I had.

Had a lot of fun working through the details and learned quite a bit along the way, overall a great starting point for me!

which issue is convertible step stool in?
Gary B on Mar 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Published in Woodworker’s Journal September/October 1992
I love the concept but what is the measurement from front to back at the base when configured in the step stool position?
A shopper on Jul 7, 2015
I am a beginner. What tools would I need to make this?
Ingrid k on May 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Saber saw whould be a big help. This would let you cut all curves and cut outs. Drill and bit to make holes to start cut outs so you can get blade of saw in. Sand paper and a lot of patients I am a retired carpenter and cabinet maker so I seldom think about what tools I need. I have a complete shop.
Of course the more tools you have the easier and quicker you can turn out projects.

For a beginner wood worker I would recommend the following tools if you have space to work--
* small table saw
* saber saw
* drill and bits
* tape measure
* hammer
* finish sander
* circular saw
* square ( both large and small )
* impact driver ( you can buy this and drill in cord less sets and are
very useful for many projects )
* router and starter set of bits
These are just a few tools, I could go on and on but you can build about anything with these.

Good luck, Jack
ps, wood smith and shop notes magazines are a great reference source for projects and shop aids.
is the plan full size ?
michael b on Dec 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The plans are not full size. The plan is for the upper and lower side pieces, the back of the chair, and the dimensions of the steps. In order to get it to size, you have to magnify a copy by 105% then separating the two major pieces, you need to magnify the pieces by 200%. This will provide you with half of the plan that you require. Then copy the upper and lower sides to complete the upper and lower sides along with the back. These instructions were on the video that was online.
How can I download aplan for this?
Rutvik P on Jun 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Bring the item up on our website, add it to your cart, and check out. Then under your account your plan will be available under "My Downloadable Plans"
These chairs are fun to make, but with use c ok mes th he problem of durability. I need to find stronger hinges. Does Rockler sell the hinges for this chair or are you on your own?
Lillee on May 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Rockler does sell piano hinges. I have not heard of this problem before. There may be some out there that are more heavy duty.
Do the plans have the measurements?
Robert S on Aug 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this plan has measurements and a cut list
when in the stepstool position how high is the very top step?
A shopper on Apr 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The top horizontal surface is 33 1/2 inches from the floor when the project is in the step stool configuration.
