Kickplate Installation
I installed two oval vent grommets in the kickplate beneath a built-in dishwasher in a kitchen in order to vent heat from the fully enclosed cabinet. The dimensions of the oval vent were perfect for this application. After reading comments posted by earlier buyers expressing concerns with the narrow retaining lip and associated difficulty in securing the grommets in place, I undersized the initial cut layout in my project. Using a 1 3/8” hole to cut the ends of the oval, I removed the remaining material by cutting a straight line from the top of one hole to the top of the other hole with a jig saw tilted inward 10 degrees. The same was done at the bottom of the circles. I used a file to expand the holes to an exact fit. The vent grommets fit securely without glue.

Vent grommets vested cooler
I ordered the two sized rectangle vents to vent a wine cooler that I added on to an existing island. Painted vents to match and inlet tied into panels with no issues. Product was exactly as described and would order again as needed.

Everyone is right about the lip...
Everyone is right about the lip falling short of being able to attach to anything. I used 1/4" thick plywood for the back of an entertainment cabinet. I traced out the pattern, taped it onto the plywood, used my jigsaw to cut the opening and put the grommet into place. The grommet stayed in place and was secure enough I didn't need to worry about securing it somehow. Besides, with these large grommet openings, I can easily reach my hand in the back to grab wiring for stereo components. I did 4 of them this way. One grommet opening was a little bit large so I cut a piece of self adhesive veneer facing that I have and put it around the cut edge of the opening. It worked perfectly.

Worked fine, but...
would have prefered a surface mountable type. The trimming of the cabinet opening so that the lip fits tightly in it was a bit more tedious than I had expected. Catalog description does not make it clear that the vent grommet needs to fit into the opening and there is no other way to keep it in place. Put a dab of glue also so it cannot fall or blow out.

Good looking finished product, but ---
Everything was "as advertised", but the lip was too narrow. You would have a better (and more "foolproof" ) product by increased the overhang to at least 3/16" to 1/4".

The 1-3/4 round lipped grommet worked great. It was a little difficult to seat it in the hole but otherwise was exactly what i expected.

How thick is the vent from the back of the lip to the back of the vent? Can you provide a photo of the side of one of these?
Kerry Z on Jun 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: About 3/16 of an inch. Less than half the thickness of 1/2" plywood.
