A refined belt sander
Good balance and ergonomics. Nice that it manages belt tension without requiring the user to fiddle with it. Best of all: effective dust collection, though I was disappointed that I couldn't use it with my Rockler Dust Right hose without finding another adapter. That item should be linked with the sander in their advertisements. Nonetheless a well-designed tool and, being a Makita, likely to prove durable.

Great little sander!
Good size, comfortable to use. Belts run/track straight and true. Variable speed is handy.

I like Makita tools and own several different ones.

Perfect HD Belt Sander
Makita makes great stuff. One can bank on it. This sander is no exception. Well built, heavy, and reliable. The variable speed option isn't too helpful to me; I use at full speed.
No issues here!

Great Sander!
Great sander. Belt are easy to change and align. Beats my old Craftsman but to be fair it was 40 years old!
Worked great. Did final touch sanding by hand. Great sander!

Professional Grade in smaller unit
Very nice heavy built sander. This is a substantial sander for smaller professional work or any home project.

Great sander. So glad I didn’t opt for the 11 amp as it would have been overkill.
Did a lot of research before purchase. Makita hands down the best belt sanders out there. I did read that the 8.8 amp motor on the 4x unit can big on occasion with low grit paper. Since I do small things like hand made table tops I went with 9903 3x21 and my thinking was right on the money. The 8.8 amp pull the papper with no issues at all. If you really need monster power, the makita 11 amp is the way to go. But this little guy will tear your arm off and knock out high or low spots with ease. More power than I’ll ever need. Smooth running machine. I’m learning to trust makita for sanding pourposes. That extra money gets you a well made machine you don’t have to take back to the store after the third use when the competitor dies. Do with they had a better warranty but have never had a prob yet. Makita is well made. PERIOD.
Belt sander knocked the glue and high spots off in a flash. Didn’t bog ones.
I did eat a few belts. My fault. will run 3Ms on it in the future. Diablo’s are the next best.

How many watts is the makita 3 x 21 belt sander ?
John D on Dec 21, 2017
One of the reviewers said they got a used unit, but I called a store in MA and they said they are new. Can anyone else confirm these are not re-conditioned units?
Mango on Aug 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I certainly can’t speak for anyone else but the one I received was brand new. I can’t believe Rockler would send a refurbished or used unit.
Can a shop vac be hooked up to the dust port instead of the bag?
David J on Aug 31, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I was able to, but it will depend on the size of your vac hose. I actually used a PVC elbow that I heated until soft and them form fit it on the discharge (with bag off, of course), and that works well. Hope this helps.
