Mortise Chisel Bit 1/4"

Item #
13731
Rating:
76% of 100

The bit removes most of the material, and the chisel squares up the sides, allowing you to cut precise 1/4" mortises for mortise-and-tenon joints. Fits the Jet Benchtop Mortising Machine (#81421, sold separately). For use with Mortise machines and drill presses with a mortising attachment.

This chisel fit my Powermatic bench top mortise. The Powermatic chisels are more expensive so I thought I'd try this one. The quarter inch chisel is the one most likely to break, being smaller with little mass. It's the auger that will break. This chisel looks very much like the Powermatic. Like all mortise chisels it needs to be sharpened before use. The things that I have found to make the chisels last is to get them sharp, use several plunges in deep mortises especially in very hard wood, don't have the auger extend too far beyond the chisel points and try to avoid plunging too close to the previous hole which causes the chisel and auger to distort. Hope that helps.

The mortising chisel is fine but the bit was too long for my mortising machine and needed to be cut to a length that would fit my Delta model 14-650 machine. I have the chisel to make four cherry table legs and it works fine.

Great Bit
I built 6 Mission style chairs which required a LOT of mortise cuts. This bit performed very well in a Jet mortise bench top machine. It still is sharp and cuts very well. I would buy this bit again without hesitation.

mortising bit
sir---I only got to use the bit one time before it was to dull to complete any other work in the bolivian rosewood I was using. Best it coud do was in soft pine. For the price involved I wouldn't spend my money on it

Where can I find a mortise attachment for drill press?
Anthony J. D on Dec 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Anthony, my mortise attachment for my drill press is one that is made by the manufacturer. I would check with the manufacturer of your drill press to see if they make one. Because I didn't have to look for an additional source, I am not aware of any after-market attachments. That does not mean that one may not exist however. Glen
