Mountain dulcimer instructions
After experiencing a malfunction in downloading instructions, I immediately notified customer support about this problem.
On the next working day the problem was acknowledged and corrected immediately.
I highly recommend, without reservations, Rockler to any woodworking customers.

Mountain Dulcimer
The article is just as good today as it was in 1992 when I wrote it. Woodworkers Journal did an excellent job in enhancing the text and rendering the plans.
I just completed a class where 20 college students each built a dulcimer according to the directions in the article.

dulcimer plans
As with many plans, alterations are just a part of it. There were a few areas when compared with a working instrament that minor adjustments became a part of this new creation. This is an instrament, so adjustments are ok!
Great plan!

Mountain Dulcimer Plans
I found the article and plans very useful as a reference for my Mountain dulcimer. The schematics provided with the article do not print as the color is too light. This did not prevent me from building a very nice dulcimer though. My first.

Woodworking Experience:
Difficult to read
Plans are very hard to see. They were written in blueprint and despite changes to printer settings, they were still blurry. It probably would have been better to do it in black and white, enlarging the print and spreading it out over several pages.

What type of wood is recommended for this?
Howard R on Feb 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Really, just about any hardwood can be used. Most of the dulcimer players in my group have dulcimers made of cherry or walnut, but several have qtr. sawn sycamore, oak, spalted maple. It is not unusual to have a body of one wood and a top of a contrasting wood. My personal preference is cherry, with a simple danish oil finish. There IS a difference in sound between woods...cherry tends to be a bit brighter, walnut a bit warmer. Make sure you use a tight-grained wood for the fingerboard, though. My best advice...go with all cherry. My 2 cents. :-)
Are the plans for either dad or dadd? is there a 6 1/2 fret
Julia C on Dec 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: This plan is for a 3 string dulcimer with the 1st string tuned to G and the drone strings tuned to low C. The frets are all whole numbered 1-15.
