The SuperNova 2 is a solid, powerful chuck, perfect for use on lathes with up to a 20'' swing. It is offered here in a value package with two extra sets of jaws—4'' jaws and 5'' jaws—in addition to the standard 2'' jaws. It's an excellent, all-purpose geared chuck, suitable for a majority of users, and is packed with exciting, innovative features such as a fully sealed composite indexing backing plate and copper-infused jaw slides. Its patented gearing system delivers incredible gripping power. You'll find yourself turning longer, more delicate stems, as well as larger, rougher work that was difficult to handle before. The SuperNova 2 requires only one hand to operate. Using a ball-nosed hex wrench with a large handle, its easy to tighten. Includes a set of 2" (50mm) jaws.

Features:

  • Fully sealed backing plate is made from ultra-tough Duracon composite, reinforced with stranded glass fibers
  • Self-lubricating properties
  • Unique indexing function built into backing plate
  • Powerful geared grip with Tuff Lock™ Technology delivers an incredibly smooth, solid, vibration-free hold
  • Single-handed operation for fast, convenient mounting
  • Captured pinion and ball-nose Allen key with large, easy grip handle
  • Body made from precision machined 1045 high-tensile steel
  • Able to take all Nova accessory jaws (except Titan Power grip, which is specially designed for the Titan Chuck)
  • Four jaw design firmly grips both round and square wood
  • Precision machined in one operation from a solid steel block for optimal accuracy
  • Polished metal finish to allow for closer tolerances and accuracy
  • Common accessory jaw fixing profile is compatible across all Nova chucks and accessories
  • Special woodturning dovetail profile on jaws
  • Auto safety stop feature so jaw slides can't protrude past the chuck body
  • Safe Lock™ Woodworm screw included for fast mounting of rough timbers

Package includes two extra sets of jaws—ideal for large turnings like bowls—plus a storage case!

The included JS100N 4'' Jaw Set is designed for expanded dovetail or reverse dovetail use. Ideal for gripping footed bowls and mounting custom wooden jaws. The JS130N 5'' set is the bigger brother to the 4'' set, designed to handle large, shallow bowl and platter work up to 29-1/2'' in diameter. The big capacity of these jaws is a perfect match for the powerful SuperNova 2. Both sets of jaws grip firmly in both contraction and expansion mode.

Important Note: Only use authentic Nova accessories on your Nova chuck. Using non-genuine Nova accessories and copies of accessories could lead to operation and safety issues and will void the warranty. Nova accessories are designed for use only on Nova chucks. Do not use on any other chuck. This is not an insert style chuck. Cannot use an insert/adapter to change the threading.

Only wish I had started years ago! Such a beautiful and functional piece of equipment. Looking forward to many more projects!
So versatile, secure, and easy to operate, even for a novice like me! I’m thrilled with what I have been able to turn with this beautiful Nova chuck. Should last me a lifetime!

Super Nova 2 bundle
Great product, use it exclusively on my Laguna 18/36 lathe. Nice to have the variety of jaws, I use the 4 inch primarily and occasionally the 2 inch. Bought a set of face plates that match up to the jaws (sold separately). Don’t have to take the chuck off the lathe to use the face plate. Good buy.

Supernova 2 Chuck Bundle
Im new to a lathe and this is my first chuck. I thought the package was priced very well. The chuck itself is well made and ea sy to use.I used it with a new Nova lathe and my only problem was figuring out that I needed to remove the face plate be for I could mount the chuck.

Good chuck, missing jaw size
I bought this chuck for machining a few teflon workpieces on my Rikon lathe. It works well and is well built at a great price. But beware, the three jaw sizes are not continuous. There are missing sizes between the smallest set of jaws and the middle ones. If you're turning beer tap handles you'll be out of luck because the small jaws are too small and mid are too big. I'll be on the lookout for the in between sizes.

The Nova chuck I bought was out of round by 18 thousants and vibrated so much I could not use it. I am sending it back.

Will this chuck fit a Delta 46-745 lathe?
Ed K on Nov 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Quick follow up to my previous reply. Just after I hit send I realized that this chuck is not an insert type chuck. So look at the documentation for your Delta lathe; if it's 1 1/4 - 8 TPI the chuck will work.
Will this fit on a Mark V Shopsmith?
Josh C on Dec 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You need the lathe spindle to be 1 1/4” 8TPI for the non-insert version of the Supernova 2 chuck to work. If you buy the Supernova 2 that requires an insert you can then buy the correct insert for a Shopsmith. When I purchased this package from Rockler it was the non-insert version.
Can this 30th anniversary Supernova2 chuck set be used with the 10x18 Harbor Freight lathe? If so what adapter is needed? Thanks.
Jarvis on Jul 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This lathe chuck does not take adapters and will only fit one size head. This information is located at the end of the description.
Can the jaws from the nova 3 fit the nove 3?
Ram Jet on Oct 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: if you are asking if the jaws are interchangeable between different Nova chucks, yes they are. Only exception is that some of the largest jaws are not recommended for use on the smaller chucks. This is all covered in the Nova/Teknatool website. Caution the Chuck in this set is NOT an insert Chuck and it only fits 1 1/4 - 8 spindles without an adapter
Can this chuck be locked to run in reverse?
Lance R on Jul 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes. There is a grub screw (set screw) that can be tightened down to allow that. There is a fiber washer included that you should put under the grub screw to protect the lathe shaft
I have a big piece of wood that I'd like to wood burn on but needs to be smoothed out, do you smooth out wood?
April H on Jul 20, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You can level a face of a piece of would by mounting it between centers and turning either a recess or tenon to allow mounting on a chuck. You can then turn the face flat
I recieved a hand me down lathe from my dad it is a grizzly model G1174 spec sheet says that spindle size is an 1-1/8 x 12 TPI RH is there a spindle adapter that will accept this chuck?
Bill P on Feb 9, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The SuperNova 2 in this special offer comes as a dedicated 1 1/4” x 8 TPI. It does not accept and insert. The standard SuperNova2 accepts inserts and there is a Nova insert for 1 1/8 x 12TPI. It is part number IJNS
Will this Chuck fit on a shopsmith mark 5?
Josh C on Dec 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It will fit any lathe. Nova makes an adaptor for the thread pitch of your lathe that has to be purchased separately.
Is it reversible?
David Sr L on Oct 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately the SuperNova 2 is not reversible.
? Will this work on a Sears 12 inch layth
Barry on Oct 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Barry - all chucks depend on the size of your headstock spindle that you would screw this chick onto. out of the box, this chuck is threaded to fit onto a 1 1/4 x 8tpi RH spindle. you can by adaptors to allow it to fit onto smaller spindle sizes.
If I buy the Chuck can I get an adapter to fit my 1" 8 tpi lathe?
L S on Sep 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This chuck is threaded for a 1-1/4" 8tpi. There are some adapters out there that can get to use it on a 1" 8tpi thread but your chuck will be moved over an 1" or so to the right. We have a G3 bundle that would fit the spindle you have. Item #56692
Will this work on a Jet 1221?
david S on Jun 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It is on the larger size for a lathe like the Jet 1221 but it will work on it.
Why do I need an insert adapter? My lathe has a threated end.
fran c on Jun 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The insert connects two parts with different thread diameters and pitches, similar to threaded plumbing bushings. In this case it connects the chuck to the lathe spindle.

With all the varying spindle thread sizes on the different lathe brands, it is not practical to make separate chucks to fit them all. So, to save that expense, different inserts are made to screw into the back of the Nova chuck. The inserts have inside diameters and thread pitches that match the different lathe spindles on the market, including yours.
Will this fit the 11/2" spindle on an older powermatic lathe?
Coan B on Jul 4, 2018
I ordered the Insert D (IDNS) 1 - 8TPI adapter for the (50518) Super Nova 2Chuck bundle and it screws onto my lathe but the treads are to big to thread into the chuck. I have the same adapter for my G3 chuck and it works fine. How do I find out what threads are in this chuck so I can get the right insert adapter?
Wade A on Jun 16, 2018
Hi, I have the Nova 1624 lathe, it has the 1-1/4 x 8 spindle thread. Do I need an adapter (or anything else) or will this chuck (Item #: 50518) just thread directly onto my spindle? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything if I order this nova 2 chuck. Thanks Marc.
