Nova G3 Comet II Reversible Chuck

Item #
94% of 100
The Nova G3 Comet II Chuck features a locking set screw that allows it to be used safely in reverse mode without the risk of unthreading. It is designed for the Nova Comet II Midi Lathe (#46457, sold separately), but can be used on any lathe with a 1" 8-TPI RH thread. When used on non-reversing lathes, the set screw must be removed. Like the similar Nova G3, this chuck is a four-jaw, self-centering scroll chuck with a high-powered TuffLock™ grip for incredibly solid, vibration free performance. The single-handed operation means more time turning and less time setting up. It has less weight, and less overhang than the larger chucks—perfect for the Comet II lathe. The minimal 1.79" body length maximizes your distance between centers, and reduces stress on the spindle. Includes a set of 2" (50mm) jaws.

  • Designed for the Nova Comet II Midi Lathe (#46457, sold separately).
  • Locking set screw lets you use the chuck in reverse mode. If your lathe does not have a reversing spindle, the set screw must be removed.
  • Set screw can be removed to be compatible with the Jet 1221VS. (Note: Not recommended for reversing)
  • 1" 8-TPI RH threading-fits the Comet II Midi Lathe.
  • Up to 400mm/16" diameter swing capacity.
  • Up to 350mm/14" diameter bowls using 50mm/2" Jaws (supplied with chuck).
  • Up to 50mm/2" length spigots (using 50mm/2" Jaws (supplied with chuck).
  • Full packaged weight is (std) 1.4 kgs/3.1 lbs.
  • Locking screw allows the chuck to be used while the lathe is running in reverse mode.
  • Small, compact design minimizes load on small spindles and bearings.
  • Open back for easy cleaning.
  • Precise, powerful hardened gear action with Tuff Lock® technology.
  • Single-handed operation with included chuck key.
  • Able to take all Nova accessory jaws. However, please note: the larger accessory jaws in the Nova line are not recommended for use on the Nova G3 Comet II Chuck. For more information, see the offers for individual jaw sets.
  • All Nova chucks are four-jaw, self centering scroll chucks for fast, secure setups.
  • The four jaw design firmly grips both round and square wood.
  • Quality materials.
  • Precision machined in one operation from a solid steel block for optimal accuracy.
  • Polished self metal finish to allow for closer tolerances and accuracy.
  • Common accessory jaw fixing profile — compatible across all Nova chucks and accessories.
  • Jaw slides made from high-tech copper fused steel for maximum hardness, wear, and self-lubricating properties.
  • Special woodturning dovetail profile on jaws.
  • Auto safety stop feature—jaw slides can't protrude past the chuck body.
  • Comprehensive instructions.
  • Safe Lock™ Woodworm screw included for fast mounting of rough timbers.

Second one
This is my second Nova chuck. I have one set up with regular jaws, and the other with the spigot jaws. I can tackle just about any turning mount, by just spinning one of these chucks on my lathe.

Why is it required to remove set screw for jet 1221vs? Will it cause damage to lathe to leave it in? Removing will defeat purpose of buying a reversible chuck
Ricky on Feb 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Jet responded to me that I shouldn’t rely on a set screw as I might ruin a project. Guessing it is a liability issue they want to avoid. Been using it in reverse for a week to turn a vase and works great. No slippage at all. Screw fits perfectly on flat part behind threads.
What is the minimum diameter that can be clamped in the chuck?
Jim G on Feb 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 1 5/8, or just a tad larger. With the jaws supplied. There are other jaws available that take it way down. I have also used a Jacobs chuck in the head stock, then you cna get right down to 1/16! I like the chuck, I have a similar One-way (with stepped jaws). I switch back and forth, no big deal. The little Nova lathe, however, I am not quite as happy with.
Is this the right chuck for the Excelsior mini lathe?
Dixter on Jun 10, 2016
BEST ANSWER: YES: the Nova G3 Comet II is pre-threaded for 1"-8tpi, which fits the Excelsior mini lathe. You will need to remove the set screw, which is used only when the chuck is fitted to a reversible lathe.
Will this chuck fit on a CENTRAL MACHINERY? It is 1", do not know thread pitch and it has reverse threads.
Guest S on Nov 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It will not only fit Central Machinery, but also : North Eastern South Western, Central Machinery.
What adapter do you use for a nova chuck on a shop smith?
Calvin K on Nov 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Use the 5/8" plain adapter.
Can this chuck be adapted to 3/4" 16tpi?
Rand H on Nov 27, 2016
BEST ANSWER: NO: you'll need the Nova G3 INSERT chuck (or any other model of insert chuck) with a 3/4"-16tpi threaded adapter to fit your lathe.
In the description it says that with the set screw removed it will work on the Jet 1221VS. In any adapter required for this or does it mount directly to the lathe?
Nate H on Feb 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The Nova G3 Comet II is pre-threaded to 1"-8tpi, so it is compatible with most mini lathes (and the Jet 1221VS) right out of the box.
Non-reversing lathes don't have a flat on the spindle (behind the threads) where the set screw can safely lock the chuck down without messing up the lathe's threads, so the set screw must be removed when the chuck is used on such lathes. The set screw must also be removed (or backed nearly all the way out) when mounting or un-mounting the chuck on reversible lathes, since leaving it in would damage the lathe's threads.
Do I need an adapter to mount the Nova G3 Comet II Reversible Chuck on my Delta 12.5 inch diameter lathe?
Kruz on Feb 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: All the Delta 12" lathes I remember have had 1"-8tpi threads, so the G3 Comet II chuck will fit. It's easy to check your lathe's measurements: you're looking for a threaded spindle that's 1" in diameter (or darned close), and there are eight threads to every inch along the length.
Would this chuck work with a Delta 46-250 Midi-lathe?
Harry D on Nov 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: yes it would. I liked it so much that I bought a second one so that I could use the available options more easily.
Will this chuck work on a shopsmith with a 1"x8tpi adapter?
Rick R on Nov 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Nova sells the adapters to fit their chucks to just about any/all lathes. If you go to their website and enter the model of this Chuck into their search engine it will show all the the thread adapters they have...and I am sure they will have one in the thread size you mentioned.
how do you use a lathe chuck?
A shopper on Jul 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I turn a lot of vases with my chuck. first you need to cut a tenon on one end i usually cut mine to a 2 inch diameter between centers and then lock in the jaws of the chuck. Just remember not to seat the tenon all the way in, keep it off the bottom of the chuck about a 16th of an inch or it won't turn true. If you go to you tube watch Cap'n Eddie Castlin's videos and Carl Jacobson has good one too.
I have central machinery model 536066 14"x40" wood lathe. Looks like it might be 3/4" thread or maybe metric? Would the g3 comet ii reversible chuck work on my lathe?
Mellor, William A on Apr 25, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The Nova G3 chuck has an internal thread of 1" x 8 TPI.

The best choice would be the Nova G3 Insert chuck (45748). You can then chose an insert that would fit your lathe. The added benefit, is that if you ever change your lathe you would only need to purchase another insert to adapt the chuck to your lathe.

Check both the dia. and the number of threads/in on your lathe to select the correct adapter. I have shown the 3/4" X 16 tpi.

Nova Insert/Adapter, 3/4" 16-TPI UNF RH with 6mm Register
I see the Nova G3 offers the option of turning in reverse without the chuck unscrewing itself and flying across the workshop, which is great. I know it's a selling point for devoted woodworkers who like to sand in reverse as a finishing-touch polish after sanding in forward mode. But what about actually turning in reverse? Are the set screws on the Nova G3 sufficient to hold the chuck in place against the greater force being applied while turning (including the occasional, dreaded, catch)? That's a big difference between the light-pressure resistance of sanding in reverse and actually cutting into the wood in reverse.
So, is this chuck up for the task?
BTW, I like the option of reverse turning simply because it makes it easier to safely access the inner wall of a bowl, etc. For comparison, when turning in forward mode, one has to position himself to scrape the inner wall of the spinning bowl nearest to the turner, essentially contorting one's arm to reach back at the inner wall that's facing away from the's terribly awkward (and hard to explain without illustration).
When turning in reverse, the inner wall of the opposite side of the bowl is much more convenient to access as it's basically facing the turner, much like when one faces a basic spindle turning.
Bottom line: If the Nova G3 is safe to use for TURNING in reverse, I'm sold.
Anyone have input?
Joe M on Dec 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I believe this is NOT a good idea! Nova does not recommend it and I found NO instances of anyone trying it on YouTube - and they do not seem averse to doing many crazy things on YouTube!😁
Will a 1. 1/4” insert fit this?

is it compatible with the NOVA 1624 II Lathe?
bob N on May 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: No, The NOVA 1624 has a spindle thread of 1 1/4" 8TPI. The Nova G3 has a 1" 8TPI thread pattern.
I have a Rikon70-220 vsr lathe. Is the Nova G3 Comet II reversible chuck compatible with this?
Jim J on Nov 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I have the same setup and they work great together
The jaws do not have grooves as other jaws do for different chucks. Does this create a slippage problem on holding bowls while turning?
Kruz on Feb 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: There is no problem with the bowl slippage. I make my connection close to the size of the chuck jaws when closed. This gives plenty of contact to support bowls. I have made bowls up to 14 inches across the top of the bowl and had no issues.
Can this be used with a Grizzly 12 inch bench top lathe?
JOE Z on Jun 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If the 12" lathe you're asking about has a 1" (diameter), 8-TPI (right-handed threads per inch) spindle, this chuck will fit it.
Will this chuck work with the Jet 1015?
Gordon M on Nov 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If the Jet 1015 has a one inch, 8 threads per inch spindle with right hand threads (and it appears to, based on a quick Google search), this version of the G3 will fit it. Otherwise you'll want another version of the G3 with the appropriate adaptor for the spindle you have.
Will the G3 work on a Grizzly G1495 woodlathe?
Mark C on Aug 12, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes it works just fine. In hind sight I wish I would have bought a chuck with more flexibility but its hard to justify the cost in my case.
Ron K in Bellingham
on all my chucks, turning the chuck key to the right tightens the jaws on a tenon. Is it the same with the Nova G3?
clifton c on Nov 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I Guess it would depend on what side your headstock is on! If your standing in front of the lathe and your chuck is on your left side then the answer is "No". Turning the key to the right (clockwise) would be opening the jaws.
What is a self metal finish? will a self metal finish rust?
richard s on Oct 24, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I imagine it's a plating. I have not had any oxidation issues. Keep it lubricated and shouldn't have any rust issues.
Will this chuck work on my PSI TCLC12VS / KWL-12VS lathe? The spindle is 1" x 8 TPI.
Wayne G on Jun 21, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will be great match with that lathe.
Does this screw on normal or is it reverse threads? Thanks
JD on Mar 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is a "normal," or right-handed (RH) thread, which fits over 99.99% of all lathes. The LH and RH/LH threaded accessories that you see now and then are designed to fit on the outboard end (left-hand end) of lathes which are equipped for outboard turning.
The jaws on this chuck do not have gripping grooves as other jaws do. Can this cause a gripping problem?
Kruz on Feb 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Nova's jaw design avoids damaging the wood any more than necessary (less clean-up work to finish), but it still provides plenty of gripping power. Just be sure to read and follow the instructions for how to mount a bowl using these jaws: it's not complicated or difficult by any means, but you really don't want to risk getting it wrong and having tree chunks flying around your shop.
What is the largest diameter that can go inside of the jaws?
pete w on Jul 2, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi Pete, I. Honestly don't know what the largest diameter could fit into the G3 jaws assuming that you are asking about the chuck equipped with the standard jaws that come with the chuck. The good news is that there are a wide variety of jaws available that will allow you to turnn larger diameter blanks.
Will this chuck fit my jet 1014vs lathe?
Gary C on Dec 31, 2015
BEST ANSWER: YES: the Jet 1014 series lathes all have a 1"-8tpi headstock spindle thread, the same as the Nova G3 Comet II. Other lathes may require the G3 Insert chuck and a threaded adapter.
Does this reversable chuck work with the left-side drive spindle of the Laguna Revo 1216 lathe? Does the locking set screw line up? Where can I get info on the locking set screw?
Gary S on May 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you would use the extension that comes with the outboard kit. Running the lathe in reverse would be great for hollowing out a bowl and turning the outside if you have access to the rear of the lathe at the head stock end. The locking screw is located 3/8" from the back face of the chuck. I don't know if it will line up with the recess on the extension that comes with the out board kit as I do not have one available to measure. However, the chuck does come with fiber washers that can be used so the set screw will not damage the treads if it lines up with them.
Does this reversable chuck work with the left-side drive spindle of the Laguna Revo 1216 lathe? Does the locking set screw line up? Where can I get info on the locking set screw?
Gary S on May 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The locking set screw center is 3/8" from the back of the chuck. I do not know if it will line up with a recess on the adapter thread that is sold with the outboard turning kit. There are fiber washers included with the chuck to prevent damage to the threads if the screw lines up with these. Another option would be to put the lathe in reverse.
Will this fit a craftsman 21752 midi lathe? Looks like I have only a morse taper, no threads. Maybe I'm missing something?
StokedOnSpokes on Dec 2, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Your faceplate should come off you headstock and is 1 and 8" thread. So this chuck should work
