Nova Mini Cole Jaw Set

Item #
45274
Rating:
92% of 100
The Nova Mini Cole Jaws are designed for re-chucking bowls with the bottom side exposed in order to remove chuck marks, add decoration or to re-shape the bottom of the bowl. Mini Cole Jaws are suitable for lathes with a minimum 8"/203mm 10″/254mm swing diameter. Other Nova jaw sets (sold separately) can be fitted to the Mini Cole Jaws for a variety of mounting options, and custom wooden jaws can also be created for unique situations. The optional 6030 Jaw Buffer Kit (#43974, sold separately) also greatly extends the workholding potential of the Mini Cole Jaws. See the Standard Cole Jaws (#45174, sold separately) for lathes with a minimum 12"/300mm swing diameter.

Features:

  • A fast, easy way of re-chucking bowls to make the finishing cuts on the bottom side.
  • Fits all Teknatool chucks.
  • Holds a wide range of bowl sizes safely.
  • Other jaws can be attached for more mounting versatility.
  • Exceptional structural strength.
  • Nova chucks give you the same jaw fixing system and same insert/adapter system across all chuck models.
  • All accessory jaws in the range will fit all the chucks in the range for optimum flexibility. Some, however, are not recommended. See individual jaws for recommendations.
  • Nova chucks are specially designed so the jaws cut into the wood, grip firmly in the contraction mode and provide high tear out strength.

Usage Tips:

  • While traditionally these type of jaws are used in the compression mode, depending on the bowl shape, the jaws can be used to grip in either the contracting or expanding mode.
  • To ensure best grip, the bowl should have a positive or negative flair towards the edge of the bowl.
  • Try to avoid straight-sided bowls where the grip will be less efficient.
  • Best practice is to have a cutting action such that much of the chisel force is directed towards the headstock, not across the face.

Easy to assemble. Made sure it tight & don't catch your piece. My bowl flew off. Fortunately I wear a full face shield. My fault, not the the tool

Great for your small projects
I purchased this to be able to finish the underside of my small bowls. It has worked great the dozen or so times I have used it already.

Getting desired results
It accomplishes what I wanted the tool for. I've used it several times and have only one comment on the product other than it does what I wanted.
The one comment regards keeping the four sections on the same plane when setting up the plates on the chuck. there is a ridge on the side of the plates that face the chuck but no slot on the Nova chuck for the ridge to fit into. Hence it is necessary to use the fastening screws to keep the plates all in the same plane.

the jaw set is ok.. its a little slow on the change overs if you only have one head stock chuck. the rubber grips should be tapered to grips better.

I have an Excelsior Mini lathe and a Nova Precision Midi chuck. I know this will fit the chuck but the minimum speed on the lathe is 760RPM and the max suggested speed for the jaws is 600. Is this pushing the minimum speed too much?
Jeff C on Jan 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have not exceeded recommended setting, unless the bowl or top that I was working on had a contoured shape and I know that it was safe. I would not recommend trying it with a straight cut. but keep this in mind! the weight of your project will be a factor also, BE SAFE FIRST and then have fun!
I don't understand how this chuck works. I have a Nova G3 Chuck. My lathe can handle a bowl with up to a maimum of a 10" diameter. Is this the right size for my lathe? Do you attache these jaws to my Nova G3 Chuck?
Duane J on Jun 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I use these jaws with the Nova Precision Midi chuck, on an old Delta 11" gap bed lathe. According to the Nova documentation, these jaws will also fit the G3 chuck. The jaws do attach to the chuck as any other set of jaws would. I just did a quick measurement and the outside diameter measures approx 6 7/8" when the chuck is fully closed and the four jaws meet. They should work just fine on a 10" lathe. There two grippers per jaw, 8 total, that give you a wide variety of diameters that you can grip your stock with.

Please turn carefully and respect the maximum recommended speed - I believe the manual states 600 RPM. There is lots of good info, manuals, etc. on the Teknatool site.
Hope this helps ...
What are the minimum and maximum bowl diameters this can handle? I understand that the bowl lip should not be at 90 degree angle.

BEST ANSWER: The biggest i have ever turned were in the 9 to 9.5 inch range.
what is the minimum diameter the Mini Cole Jaw Set can chuck?
Roger F on May 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: When paired with a Nova G3 chuck the minimum diameter is 2 - 1/16".
