Pro Pen Turning Mandrel, #2 Morse Taper

Item #

Rating:
98% of 100

The essential tool for pen turning on the lathe! This precision-machined steel bar is held in the lathe to ensure accurate pen turning when using a live center. No drill chuck is required—the mandrel is held directly in the morse taper of your lathe! The brass compression fitting allows you to turn shorter length blanks without having to use a wood spacer. Simply slide the fitting onto the shaft and tighten it at the correct location for your blank. This Pro Pen Turning Mandrel includes a #2 morse taper arbor for use with a #2 morse taper lathe, a 7mm mandrel shaft and knurled nut.

Great
Great mandrel. Everything slides on nicely and easily but there is a little bit of grease that tends to come out when wet sanding which sometimes gets on the wood and discolors it but no big deal. Perfect mandrel.

Dimensions of #2 Morse taper?
Joe P on Jan 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: What kind of dimensions, length, OD,thd size, length of size?
How do you support the screw end on the lath? Just putting it in the morse taper it wobbles.
Doug B on Jul 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The tail stock with a live center should secure the other end from the Morse taper. Don't make it too tight or the mandrel will flex and your pens will be out of round. Good luck.
Is there bead brushings that come with the mandrel?
anandparikh on Feb 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There aren’t any. Just the lock down compression nut.
I've tried using a new mandrel to turn wood for a bottle opener. How do I keep the wood from slipping ?
Skip V on Jan 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: this mandrel is not for bigger OD wood, its for smaller DIA. which creates less friction. This mandrel holds the pen stock just by compression force. If you want to turn bigger stock you might want to get mandrels like the ones on the pics and hold your stock between live center. Hope this helps

will this mandrel work with the excelsior model mc1018 lathe that I purchased from you? to turn pen blanks is there anything else I will need to get ? or is this mandrel all I need?
cory m on Feb 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have used it with the Excelsior lathe and it works. You will need the proper bushings for the pens you are turning.
Does the mandrel screw into the Morse taper? If so, what is the thread?
