Quick-Change Musclechuck™

With just a half-turn of a hex wrench, router bits pop in and out with absolute ease.
Item #
88% of 100

One router bit change with the Musclechuck™ will have woodworkers wondering why this ingenious chuck wasn't invented along with the router. With just a half-turn of a hex wrench, router bits pop in and out with absolute ease. No more rummaging around for the right wrenches, or skinning your knuckles on the router housing. In fact, you don't even have to use the collet lock - ideal for table- or CNC-mounted routers. Not only that, but the extra reach afforded by the Musclechuck allows you to perform above-table router bit changes in seconds. Unlike many other quick-change router chucks, this one doesn't rely on a cam, so it won't damage the router bit shank, and there's no risk of loosening over time. Available in two types for different groups of routers.

  • Easy installation: Musclechuck threads directly onto your router's existing spindle
  • The Musclechuck accepts 1/2" shanks out of the box, and a 1/4" reducer (#44454, sold separately) is available for 1/4" shanks
  • Chuck adds approximately 1/2" to the length of your router spindle, which makes more cutting length available when the router is mounted in a table
  • Use an ordinary 4mm or 5/32 in hex wrench (sold separately) to secure the bits. A ball-ended hex wrench makes for easy above-table bit changes, and a T-handled model is ideal

DeRosa Engineering (Musclechuck) is transparent
The owner, John DeRosa answers the phone and gives complete answers to your questions. My unit had a hitch and john offered to rework the chuck and the spindle on my router too. I shipped him everything and he made it right. Turns out the chuck was ok and I needed to be more exact in the way i mounted it. He also replaced my 1/4" collet as he had ones in stock that were of tighter tollerance. If I could give 6 stars I would.

Muscle Chuck Review
This is a fantastic item. The muscle chuck is well balanced and I have yet to have an issue with runout or a loose bit in the 2 years I've used this chuck on my Porter Cable 890 (CNC Mounted) Router. I purchased this as I was used to an Allen Wrench and clamp type system for my smaller rotary engraver. The time saved changing bits is invaluable.

Excellent Collet
I've only used this collet a couple of times. It worked great. The only issue that I had was in using the 1/4 inch adapter. I had to use a screwdriver to help pry the adapter out of the collet.

Fortunately, there is a lip on the adapter that prevents the collet from sliding through the collet and it is positioned in such a way that you can place a screwdriver point under the lip to pry it up in order to remove it. That was no big deal, just a slight inconvenience. Be careful when you insert a 1/2 inch bit as it will drop all the way through the collet if you don't hold on to it before tightening the hex bolt. Again, nothing to get excited over, just pay attention to what you are doing and you won't have any problems.

Woodworking Experience:
Terrific addition to your router
I liked the MuscleChuck so much that I ordered another one. I have one on a CNC router and wrangling with those wrenches (before I added the MuscleChuck) was terrible. Same thing with my router table. It was difficult to get a wrench on the shaft and hold down the lock at the same time. The MuscleChuck just made it really, really easy and convenient. I am also giving one as a gift to a very special woodworker who has helped me out along the way. He is going to love it!

Mark C on Jun 13, 2016
I chose this adapter to make above-the-table bit changes easier. While the bit changes were easier, with just an Allen wrench, I could never eliminate the vibration this adapter caused, even after following the manufacturer's instructions. Sadly, an expensive piece of kit that sits in the drawer now.

Richard D on Jun 1, 2015
Excellent addition to my CNC router spinal! Have been using it for a couple of months now and it save me a lot of time in bit changes as well as recuses the ware and tare on the bits due to it's circular clamping system. Freeing up a hand to navigate the bit has also saved many a project from dropping the bit onto the work verses the old collet system I had to hold two wrenches with both hands.

BEST ANSWER: Rockler does not currently carry the version of Musclechuck that fits the Hitachi rouiter.
I want to use this on my Porter Cable router mounted in a table. what is the difference between a type 1 and a type 4 and which do I need?
Buddy on Apr 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: As stated in the Technical details for the Musclechuck:
•Type 1 Musclechuck fits Porter Cable 630, 690, 691, 693, 890, 7518, 7519, 7536,7537, 7538, 7539 only.
•Type 4 Musclechuck fits Bosch 1613 AEVS, 1617 EVS, 1618 EVS, 1619 EVS,1400E, GOF2000, Makita 3612C.

Since you want to use in on your Porter Cable router, as long as it's one of the models listed, the type 1 Musclechuck would be the correct one to use. Also, unless all your router bits are 1/2" shafts, you'll also want the 1/4'' Collet Reducer for Musclechuck™ Quick-Change Router Chuck Item #: 44454.

Hope this answers the question.
Can I use the 1/4" adapter that came with my Bosch 1617 or do I have to use the one from Musclechuck?
Ted K on May 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: If I'm not mistaken, the 1/4" adaptor for the Bosch 1617 screws on to the router's chuck. If so, It won't work with the Musclechuck. To use your adaptor on your router you would have to remove the musclechuck and install your adaptor. The 1/4" adaptor for the Musclechuck slides into the mounting hole for 1/2" bits. It is slotted in several places around it perimeter and is intended to compress along its full length as the tightening screw on the Musclechuck is turned. (A caution comes with the 1/4" adaptor that one of the slots in the 1/4" adaptor MUST align with the slot in the Musclechuck.) Hope this answers the question.
