Good kit, works great.
I understand the frustration over having to buy a different bushing set for every style of pen or pencil you want to turn. Not knowing I even needed bushings I had to go back to the store to get them.
That being said, if you're going to make 5, 10, 100 of these it makes perfect sense to sell them separately. I bought the Summit Pen and Pencil kits and have done the pencil so far. It was simple enough to assemble with a bench vise if you are careful. The Zebra wood I used turned out very nice.

Rockler stands by their products
Bought kit 2years ago but just recently made the pencil only to find that the mechanism did not work. Rockler replaced the kit even though it was bought a long time ago. I thank Rockler for standing behind their product but recommend you check the pencil mechanism as soon as bought.

Quirky pencil kit
Maybe I'm being too picky, but I had a number of issues with this pencil kit.

For starters, I had to go back to the store and buy the specific bushing set for this kit. The very closely related Summit PEN kit bushings were different. You simply cannot even turn this kit at all without the bushings -- they have a special shoulder that allows the tubes to be mounted on a 7mm mandrel. I prefer to just use the basic 7mm bushings and a caliper so I don't have to buy a zillion bushing sets that I will only use once.

Also, when the kit was assembled, the twist mechanism that advances the pencil lead seemed a little flaky, and would sometimes slip in the brass tube, and sometimes it would catch enough to advance the lead.

How would you insert more lead? In the picture, I don't see any kind of removable button.
Kevin W on Sep 8, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Unscrew the tip. Then remove the pencil. The end should come off Put several leads in the end and reassemble. Note... When making this pen read the turning instructions carefully.
