Wenge by the Piece-1/8" Thickness

A rich, coffee colored wood with veins of caramel, Wenge's striking contrast makes it an excellent accent wood for small, decorative items. The wood is extremely dense and durable. You won't have to worry about chipout, which is difficult to prevent when planing thin stock. Thin boards are ideal for edging, veneering, inlay, marquetry, sides for decorative boxes, bending stock, bent laminations and whatever else your imagination can dream up!

Lumber Details:

  • Native to: Forests of Zaire, Cameroon, Gabon, southern Tanzania, Mozambique and the Congo.
  • Tree: Medium sized, may reach a height of 50 to 60 feet, with a trunk diameter of 30 to 36 inches.
  • Sapwood: Pale yellow or white, clearly differentiated from the heartwood.
  • Heartwood: Dark brown to black, with fine, very dark veins and pale lines. Fantastic contrast. Color variation between boards is reported to be moderate.
  • Light and Air-Induced Changes: Exposure lightens the dark color of the wood, and lumber can be intentionally left in the sun to lighten the color.
  • Grain: Fairly straight.
  • Texture: Medium to coarse.
  • Luster: Low.
  • Movement: Fairly stable.
  • Natural Durability: Heartwood is quite durable and resistant to termites. High weather resistance makes Wenge an option for some exterior applications.
  • Working characteristics: Responds well to machine and hand tools, provided they are sharp. Because of the natural resins in the wood, special care must be taken in gluing and finishing operations.
  • Strength: Varies with density. Bending strength is generally very high. Compressive strength parallel to the grain is exceptionally high. It is moderately hard and resistant to marring. High weight and density.

Woodworking Experience:
How have I lived without Exotic Woods?
I love woodworking. I love the feel of great wood. I love the texture of fine wood as I hand saw each piece. I love the smell of lumber. However, I'm terrible at woodworking. Well, not terrible but no where near a professional but at 70 years old, I'm still learning and still trying.
It is hard for me to believe but I had no idea that such wonderful exotic lumber existed until a friend suggested Rockler Woodworking. When I found Wenge, I knew what my next project would be. It was the answer to so many questions and quests that I had. It will be a perfect match. Another woodworker suggested that I try 'bleaching' Wenge for a very dramatic look. You can't get that from the local hardware store. I have reordered numerous times from Rockler and each time the quality is the same: PERFECT.

Just Lke Oak but Dark
Wenge worked just like Oak. Very open grain. Looks great but open grain makes it hard to use on items like cutting boards etc.

I've ordered several peices of Wenge from Rockler and so far I have been extremely happy with the quality of the milling. The Grain on this wood is beautiful, but be sure to use a mask when sanding, wenge saw dust can cause respiratory problems.

great look - would like a thiner option too
This is a great piece of wood for creating an accent in a wood project. I wish it came in 1/16" x 3/4" thickness x 36". I like to add a curved line in some of my projects and 1/16 is much easier to manipulate. It would be nice to reduce the price a bit as really is not that much wood and is usually from scrap material.
