Fun and quick project for little money.
Quick and easy to make.
The whistle is extremely loud.
I bought/made one for each of my children and I want to hide them. (The whistles)
Fun, inexpensive project.
If you use a pen blank you can make a matching pen with the scrap material

Great Kit! Perfect for a first...
Great Kit! Perfect for a first turning project. I used scrap cutoffs from previous pen kits. Assembles well, 3 parts including the ring.

Nice Gift at a reasonable price.
Great way to use scrap wood and makes a nice gift. Very easy to make and gets a smile every time. Would pay more for bigger sound.

Fun Kit poor whistle
This was a fun kit to put together. However, the whistle is very low quality and it is hard to hear it when blown.

not loud
have to blow just right to make some noise. Takes practice and adjusting force and position. I am guessing around 40 db. While a referee whistle is over 100 db.So not very practical as a security device. I bought 4 and have tried 2. Won't buy any more.

didn't whistle
Summary says it all. It makes a noise like a kid before they have learned how to actually whistle. A lot of air with a little bit of pitchiness.

has anyone tried to modify this to make it work well? ie drill out end before assembly.

BEST ANSWER: I have not encountered any problems with this kit> How does drilling it improve the performance. I would be willing to give it a try!
