Adjustable Box Joint Jig Downloadable Plan

Item #
62% of 100

On a standard-style box joint jig, setting up the pin to match the dado blade and getting the spacing just right makes the jig a fussy, single-use item. Here's an adjustable, reusable box joint jig that will suit any joint. It's the last one you'll ever make.

Thorough, complete, but not over-wrought
This jig is like Goldilocks' oatmeal: just right. It's sophisticated enough to be adjustable, but simple enough to build and operate. The plan is also just right: complete and thorough, but not unnecessarily technical. I'm going to enjoy building and using this jig.

Haven't made the jig yet, HOWEVER, I had to go back and copy the COMMENT about changing the design a bit to be able to ADJUST the gig better, in particular, it looks, by adding a knob and a spring to the jig adjust mechanism.

Good Plans
I needed more information and potential sourcing for 1-2 items needed. Otherwise, it was great.

Nice design, except for the adjustment mechanism
I liked the idea of a universal, adjustable box joint jig, so I bought this plan and built it out of Baltic birch plywood. It's solid and accurate, but the mechanism for adjusting the position of the sliding pin block is unworkable as described. The author instructs the user to turn the threaded rod to make fine adjustments to the pin position, but this rod is fixed into threads tapped into the sliding block and thus can't be rotated. I devised a simple solution using a threaded knob that moves the rod without rotating it. I also installed a small spring to keep tension on the pin block during adjustments. See photos.

Easy build!
I enjoyed building my jig and have used it for 3 projects already. It works very well. A minor complaint is that you mix pictures from both a left and right construction that causes a bit of concern.
I don't have the use of my right arm so I made some modifications for a handle between the braces.

I also made a slide to move the guard out of the way to ease acsess to the lock down bolt.

I believe one of the photos was backwards this made it more difficult and one of the key parts placement namely the pin or key should have a pattern or better explanation.
I think one of your guys should test build one of these for their feed back.
Not easy to build but it works. I had to build a second one to get it right.

I was not able to download the plans. I also did not receive a reply to my email about the problem. I doubt that I will purchase any more downloads.

The jig seams interesting but, there is nothing explaining how or even it works?

BEST ANSWER: I didn't feel the plan or instructions were very well written.
How do you put a bevel on the fence to hold the backing plate???
Richard K on Mar 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I built the jig. Never used it for holding a backing plate. Seems very difficult to set up.
the plans are not accurate. I will not be able to use a 1/2 inch cut with my saw. The pin does not line up with the blade to make a cut. not very good plans.?????????
