Bethlehem Olivewood Cross Laser-Cut Inlay Pen Kit Blank

Item #
74% of 100

This two-part kit lets you build your own composite pen blank with an authentic Bethlehem Olivewood cross inlaid into a walnut barrel. Once turned, the assembled parts create a seamless wood body for a beautiful finished pen. Designed for Manhattan Chrome, Manhattan Gold, and Elegant Manhattan style pen kits only, sold separately. Assembly requires CA (cyanoacrylate) glue. For best results, use sharp tools. For easy-to-follow directions (including color photos) on applying the CA finish to your pen kit, see the article "My Simple CA Finish" by Colin Nelson.

Woodworking Experience:
would like to have the base wood in a whiter wood and the cross in a larger size and of more contrast.

I popped out the cross and filled with a crushed stone and used CA glue to secure the stone before turning. Did not care for the Walnut tube base.

I just completed turning this cross inlay pen blank. In my case the inlay was in the blank to begin with and fitted very well. Added CA glue per instructions to secure inlay before turning. Turned and finished nicely with a CA finish. I clipped out part of the blank from the tube trimming excess CA finsih from the ends-not the blanks fault. I would agree that the inlay could be larger. Contrasts of wood could be greater but that is how wood is. I'll order again.

Perhaps I was lucky, but the cross fit perfectly in my pen. I would give it 5 stars except I think it would be better if the cross was slightly larger and the walnut body was slightly darker, making more of a contrast between it and the cross. That said, it made a very nice pen and nice gift I used a gel cartridge in place of the ballpoint for a smoother writing pen.

The inlay cross is tiny. There was a lot of slop in the fit, and left a gap at the top. This could be better. The pen kit is adequate, but not anything special.

Recently I had purchased 3 Olivewood cross Pens. These were to be turned and given as gifts within my congregation using the Sierra Pen Kits. Much to my disappointment I wound up with flaws in the Cross area as well as in the Olivewood itself. I managed to dummy up those having spacing flaws at the cross. In turning my 3rd Pen I noticed a hairline fracture in the wood, believing this did not go all the way through I continued turning and found upon completion that it did go all the way through. I will not give this pen to anyone. My loss. Now I have a request for one and I have ordered one. If my pen arrives with a flaw I will no longer purchase these specialy pens.

Because when I was gluing in the brass insert in the last one it got stuck too close to the bottom and I had to cut the cross part off.

Olivewood is a beautiful wood, the markings on regular blanks are amazing and some of the most breath taking you will ever see. For this reason I purchased this laser cut Inlay and presented it to a Pastor as a going away gift.

Does the store carry the cross pen /
Dennis D on Mar 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It did a year ago when I purchased it. The inlay kit and the pen hardware were available. A very nice piece when you are done with it.
I'm buying the kit as a gift for my husband. Does the kit have everything he needs?
KAP20 on May 12, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This is only the pen blank. You must also purchase one of the Manhattan pen kits (#48585, or 43431, or 47863) as well as make sure he has
Pen Turning Mandrel (sold separately)
Manhattan Bushing Set (#43428, sold separately)
27/64" Drill Bit (#32111, sold separately)
