Manhattan Ballpoint Pen Hardware Kit - Gold

Item #
94% of 100

With its elegant profile, superb balance, and smooth action, the Manhattan Pen has earned its place as a favorite among pen turners. It's a single twist pen - one turn of the barrel exposes the ballpoint tip. The Manhattan Ballpoint Pen takes standard Parker ballpoint pen refills. Choose from hundreds of eye-catching materials for the barrel. In hardly any time at all, you'll have a twist pen that will truly be turning heads.

Easiest, Fastest Pen to Make, with a Quality Look and Feel
I turned many pens from different Rockler pen kits recently, including several Manhattan pens. The Manhattan pens are the easiest pens I have found yet. You turn one piece and finish it, then press the cap on. It is the only time you need a press. Insert the mechanism and ink in the bottom, then screw on the tip. With your hands, push the top part of the pen onto the bottom part. Done.

I turned several Manhattan pens from these regular Gold kits, and also the Titanium Gold kits. They are identical, other than the black vs. titanium gray on the top and bottom. This Gold kit has black on top and bottom.

Caution: Pay attention to the clip as you press the cap in place. The clip will bend slightly against the pen to provide normal clip pressure, but don't allow it to bend much. You can accidentally bend it too far, and then it won't touch the pen when assembly is complete.

The Manhattan pens write well, look classy, and feel hefty in the hand. They may be the best pen kit value in the store. Who could complain about that?

Great for turning out a lot of pens.
I made 30 Gatsby pens for a friend, then I discovered the Manhattan. Basically the same pen and same price, but the bands and tip are more elegant.

One piece cuts your time considerably...and very straightforward to assemble. Made 4 pens on about 2 hours.

These pens are made from padauk.

I like this pen kit
I have been turning pens for a couple of years but have just recently discovered the single barrel Manhattan pen kit. Every pen that I have turned gets plenty of "Oooohs and Aaaahs" And the best part - I use less wood and the assembly is simple.

What ball point pen refill is to be used with the Gold Manhattan Pen Assembly?
Thomas C D on Apr 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It takes a standard Parker style refill available at any office supply store.
I am definitely a beginner. I've noticed that a lot of these kits require desperate purchase such as: Pen Turning Mandrel (sold separately)
Manhattan Bushing Set (#43428, sold separately)
27/64" Drill Bit (#32111, sold separately)

Main question: Do these desperate purchase parts listed above apply to most pen kits, or will I be purchasing these additional items every time I choose to do a different pen kit?
Greenhorn on Sep 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The mandrels are a long term purchase. You buy the size you need (most commonly 7mm) and use them until they wear out. I still have my first 7mm mandrel and it's over 20 years old. The bushings and drill bits are specific to the pen kit you buy. Also reuseable but you have to have the ones required for the pen kit you purchase. The bits last a long time if you take care of them. The bushings wear out after a while because you'll hit them with your gouge and sand them down while finishing. I use newer bushings for turning and older ones for sanding.
how long is brass tube manhatten pen?
gary o on Jun 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Sorry don't have that answer it would be best to call Rockler and have them measure it for you
Is the Sierra pen and Manhattan pen the same size?
DAVID H on Apr 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I am fairly certain they are. I haven't actually checked, but I used the Sierra bushes and everything fitted perfectly.
How long does the Turning blank need to be? Thanks.
Kerry A on Oct 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: After gluing in the brass tubes, the turning blanks are cut to that same length.
Does Rockler sell an appropriately sized sleeve to guide the barrel trimming of a Manhattan pen? How have others handled square blank/barrel trimming?
Glenn S on Sep 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Rocklers does sell different styli kits for each style of pen that they sell. These fit on the mandrel adjacent to the portion of the pen which they are to be used as guides to size the wooden portions of the pen. These instructions are in the hardware kit for each style of pen when you buy the hardware.
Is it possible for me to order a twist mechanism for my Manhattan pen? I messed it up. Help, please.
Caneman on Jul 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Call their headquarters. I had to request a piece for another kit, but mine was missing. They might help.
