    My fav blanks
Ironwood is my #1 wood. American, and polishes like a mirror. Very hard, use sharp tools, but it is worth it. Sand through 4000 at least, and I recommend Hut friction polish sticks. Easy sell at craft shows.

    Ironwood for duck calls
Great wood to use for duck, goose, and other game calls. After sanding to 2000 grit and finishing with CA you get a mirror shine. Great sound also

    Beautiful Rrsults
The blanks I received were used to turn pizza cutter and ice cream scoops handles. This wood is very dense (hard) and requires sharp tools for turning. Cuttings and sanding dust are very toxic and require you to wear a respirator. The blanks I received had a wonderful dark to blond coloration. They finish like glass when sanded to 600 and burnished on the lathe at high speed. Would look even more polished if Micro Mesh were used. These are a bit more expensive but are worth the cost in the end product

    Desert Ironwood Turning Blanks
This wood turns very well and produces a great luster finish. I used it for the handle of a bottle opener and would recommend it for other similar projects.

    I had bought a 2x2x6 blank...
I had bought a 2x2x6 blank on sale 2 years ago and just let it sit. The wood didn't look like much until I cut into it with my carbide tipped band saw. What had been a muddy brown lump suddenly revealed the rich golds , chocolate, and black hues of really, really nice desert ironwood. The wood is workable with sharp hand tools and scrapers, and polishes to an incredible finish. I haven't tried turning it, but imagine it to be an excellent turning wood.

    Not that great
I have always love iron wood, but this one came out okay at best. It is very hard, very hard to work with and when finished it is not overly impressive. I would avoid this.

I'm looking to make knife handle and a presentation case with this wood. Where can I find with more width and length? Something like 50"X6"X1"
    Danny on Jun 30, 2016
BEST ANSWER: 50"x6"x1"? It's desert ironwood. From the desert. It's really deserty. Not lush. Not huge. I'm done.
    Does the wood weather well?
    Mike N on Aug 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Lots of questions for this. Are you coating it? Wax or super glue or some other lacquer? Leaving it in sun in hot cars? General answer is it’s a very hardwood, cut with a very sharp tool. Coat heavy. It can weather but with a blank this size, extreme weather will not hold up over time. In a larger format, it will be more forgiving. But with proper care without extreme conditions, you will have a great product. I overheated a blank in sanding before, split it. I remade it and took care, it sealed it properly, it’s lasted.
We have a 4'X8' area we would like to cover with Ironwood in a herringbone pattern. We are willing to use another hardwiod as a base. Where can we get the ironwood for this project?
