Woodworking Experience:
Awesome Set
I've used this set to make tongues and grooves on the ends of 3/4" oak and maple flooring for various flooring jobs. I like the adjustability of the set. Enough shims are included to fine-tune the fit to near perfection. When used in a router table in conjunction with a sliding miter gauge it worked very well for my purpose.

I purchased this item because I have some Shaker style cabinets to build. 1/4” plywood actually measures 7/32”. This set will give the the finished product a better fit than the standard quarter inch tongue and groove bit.

How obtain instruction manual for 99-036. Adjustable T&G bit?
Phil O on Apr 19, 2016
what is the groove depth? Is that ajustable
dave w on Jan 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is a max groove depth set by the central bearing, which is close to 1/2”. But you can make the cut shallower if you have a fence for your router
Can this bit set make 3/4" thick shaker cabinet doors with a 3/8" recessed panel in the front and an 1/8" reveal in the back? The panel material would be 1/4" mdf.
The reason I ask, is because the image of the router bits show the "tongue and groove" centered in the stock and I'm wondering if the cutters are big enough to cut the rail tenons in one pass if it's not centered. Hope that makes sense - Anyone know?
Jeff S on May 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The cutters are 0.47"
what is the depth of cut of the groove or tongue ht?
scott m on May 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: 7/16" is more accurate
How are bits adjusted
Paul A on Mar 3, 2016
Both bits contain a stack of shims that can be swapped in as needed. Take the nut & washer off, look up the required shims on the chart provided with the instructions and move them into the correct position relative to the bearing and cutters. The extra shims go back on the arbor and don't impact the desired cut. I've used my set with great success making panels for bookcases and radiator covers. I would highly recommend this T&G bit set.
I have 1/2" planks, I would like to and tongue and groove together; hence, would this bit work?
Michael R on Mar 28, 2018
Is this a set to make up one bit, or a two bit set?
Glen on Apr 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This is a two bit set, which is what I was looking for. I do mostly shaker style panel doors and furniture and this way I can have the bits set up and not have the hassle of breaking down the bit every time I want to cut slots or tongues. Works great for 1/4 inch plywood panels that are realty 7/32.
Does this bit have to b used in a table mounted router or can i jus put it in my router and use it without table?
A shopper on Apr 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The Freud instruction manual for this T&G bit set states: "Use a router table and fence whenever possible. Be sure all guards are in place. Bits over 1-1/2" in diameter must only be used with a router mounted in a router table." The cutter heads do exceed the 1-1/2" diameter guideline. As others have stated, safety and control come first.
I have a 0.5" set of boards I need to tongue and groove join. Is this easily adjustable to cut a smaller groove? Or, what is the thinnest groove and tongue it will cut?
John R on May 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The product listing says it will go down to 1/2" stock, so I believe you can make it work. The only challenge you should have is that there won't be much stock thickness left on either side of the groove. Oh, and be sure to do this on a router table for safety and stability. I used to put a tongue on 3/4" oak flooring ends to tie into a transition piece, and it worked great.
How much horsepower does this bit take?
Lance on Jan 28, 2016
I use the porter cable model 8931 router which I believe is a 3 horse power and has a variable speed adjustment. The higher the horse power the more ability the router has to keep up its rpms when using these bits but its not just hsp that you need the spped control also helps you dial in the router for good clean cuts. I have two of these routers and they work great with this style bit. Hope this helps
Can this be used to make T&G cuts on composite decking material? Specifically Lowes ChoiceDek Foundations Composite Decking.
T-Rev on Jun 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Good Day Trevor,
Most often than not you can use woodworking tools on composite decking. That being said the material tends to dull blades and drill bits fairly quickly. I would check with the deck manufacturer on there specifics but I would guess that it would dull your router bits quite fast especially if you were doing a whole deck (long lengths) Most of the composites are quite dense. If you are planning a small project with this material it would probably work out ok. Hope this helps you.

can I use this bit to edge and butt join 2X4 stock?
Randall L. on Apr 28, 2019
BEST ANSWER: For the purposes you described I don’t see any reason why you can’t use this tongue and groove bit for that.
How wide are the blades on the groove bit?
Jason N on Dec 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: They cut very clean. I have two sets so I can always have one sharp. Have cut countless cabinet doors with mine. Completely satisfied.
How deep does the Grove cut and how long is the tongue?
Bob C on May 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Using my wooden rulers the tongue and the groove both appear to measure 7/16" deep. Using a caliper they both measure a little over .450". Hope this helps.
Ron, Indiana
On the tongue bit, how wide is the carbide tip on each of the cutters?
Chris S on Aug 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The large carbide tips are .480 inches and the small tips are .200 inches wide.
What is the maximum board thickness for these bits?
Gary on Jul 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: maximum material thickness is 1-1/4"
