Rockler Router Bit Storage Inserts, 10-Pack

Let's face it, most wood shops suffer from a shortage of space on tabletops and benchtops. That's why we like to take advantage of all the wall space we can. Our Router Bit Storage Inserts let you do just that. They are made from a durable molded polyethylene that holds the shanks snugly enough that they won't fall out when stored on the wall. Wall storage also means that dust won't collect between the bits. Of course, you can use the same inserts for horizontal storage in a drawer or on a shelf—the choice is yours. Each insert is stepped to hold both 1/4'' and 1/2'' shanks, providing flexibility when you need to rearrange or add a new bit to your collection. It's a neat, clean storage solution that requires a minimum of materials and is easily customized.

  • Holds shanks snugly enough for vertical or horizontal storage—just drill a 5/8'' hole and push in the insert
  • Inserts are stepped to hold both 1/4'' and 1/2'' shank router bits, or 1/2'' shank Forstner bits
  • Polyethylene material helps keep out moisture to prevent rust
  • Ribbed exterior keeps insert firmly in place when removing bit

Very useful, nice & tight, just right
I salvaged some doors from a flip-house across the street. They were just throwing them away (rather than taking them to the Habitat ReStore). Can’t have that! Anyway, I build a narrow cabinet with space for 30 router bits.

Router bit holders
Love them. I ended up with a second order so I now have all my bits in them and still have six (6 holders) left over. Cut a piece of one by lumber to 2" x 2". Drill a 5/8" hole all the way through in the center and you're (almost) all set. I had to make three 3" x 3" for a couple of larger bits. Best of all is the little "pull tab" that allows you to open the package easily. Nice extra, Rockler. My shop has eleven (11) routers, so I have a lot of bits. A horizontal router table, a vertical router table, five (5) hand held and six (6) laminate trimmers (three of which are mounted under a single table top and have a 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4" round-over bits permanently installed.

There great each can hold 1/4 or 1/2 inch bit. I glued them to the cap of a plasic bottle each bottle now holds one bit inside which protects the bit from hitting anything

Just what I was looking for
These router bit storage inserts were just the thing I needed to complete my router table. I wanted to make everything adjustable as I slowly move over to ½” shanks. Having the ability to hold both ¼” and ½” shanks while only having to drill out one size in my woodblocks was great. They hold the bits very securely and provide the flexibility I need to expand my collection.
These blocks make it easy to move and add router bits

I made a bit storage tray that fits into the lower frame of my Rockler router table. These inserts work great, and not that it matters, but I also really enjoy the way they look, arranged in precise columns and rows, nicely showcasing my collection of bits.

How many 1/2" bit inserts are in a pack? Will Rockler offer "1/2" bit inserts only" or "1/4" bit inserts only" packs in the future?
Gabriel R on Jan 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: All inserts will accommodate 1/2" bits. They are able to fit both sizes of bit. As to the second question, I doubt Rockler will change the product offering since the current design fits both sizes.
Have the foam holders - bits too tight - do these Rockler bit inserts grab the shank tightly or are the bits easily removed (plan horizontal storage) - thanks?
G I on Apr 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I am very happy with these inserts. Very light effort to remove the bits but they hold them tight enough that they are secure.
What is the outside diameter of the top lip and there a recommended clearance between the inserts
Frank L on Sep 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Tops on router bit sleeves are 1 inch wide.Spacing will depend on various router bit dimensions.
What storage tray would U recommend for the bit inserts?
Larry H on Aug 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I built 2 trays and a box with a lid for them to sit in. Both trays are 16" x 12" x 3/4". In one I tray I drilled 60 holes, 6 rows of 10 each centered on a grid spaced 1 1/2" apart. The other try has 20 holes, 4 rows of 5 centered on a 2" grid to one side. On that other side of that tray I also routed out a 3" x 10" by 3/8" deep sections to hold hex keys and spare bearings. These inserts are great, they hold onto the bit shaft without it being too tight to remove.
Does it work for 6mm bit?
Claude on Apr 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don’t have any router bits with a 6mm shank but all the 1/4” shank router bits work very well with these inserts.
What is the depth of the 1/2" portion of the storage insert?
Michael S on Mar 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: 0.435” at the 1/2” portion.
