Holds both 1/4'' and 1/2'' shanks snugly enough for either horizontal or vertical storage.

Let's face it, most wood shops suffer from a shortage of space on tabletops and benchtops. That's why we like to take advantage of all the wall space we can. Our Router Bit Storage Inserts let you do just that. They are made from a durable molded polyethylene that holds the shanks snugly enough that they won't fall out when stored on the wall. Wall storage also means that dust won't collect between the bits. Of course, you can use the same inserts for horizontal storage in a drawer or on a shelf—the choice is yours. Each insert is stepped to hold both 1/4'' and 1/2'' shanks, providing flexibility when you need to rearrange or add a new bit to your collection. It's a neat, clean storage solution that requires a minimum of materials and is easily customized.

  • Holds shanks snugly enough for vertical or horizontal storage—just drill a 5/8'' hole and push in the insert
  • Inserts are stepped to hold both 1/4'' and 1/2'' shank router bits, or 1/2'' shank Forstner bits
  • Polyethylene material helps keep out moisture to prevent rust
  • Ribbed exterior keeps insert firmly in place when removing bit

router storage inserts
They work great, keeps bits from wiggling around and shafts from rusting. I put a little mineral oil on the shafts to keep them from rusting and it wipes off easy and does not slip in the router collet.

Professional looking project
I could have just drilled holes to put router bits in, but these make the project look great for bits not in a case. I had plenty of scarp and hung this rack on the top shelf divider of my shop storage cart. The hooks were cut to fit from nylon scrap I had been saving for a couple of years knowing that it would come in handy (sometime).

The inserts are great for organizing your bits.
These inserts are so easy to install in whatever configuration suits your shop, I don’t have much space. The bits release from the inserts like butter...unlike the wood racks in my old cases.
I got so tired of digging out my bit cases. With these inserts I was able to maximize the space...
Forstner bits on top and router bits on the bottom. I have plenty of openings for future bits...

Perfect project, Bit Holder
Great confidence builder. 5/8 bit with hand drill was tricky. The flanges on the Rockler bit sleeves covers some imperfections of the drill holes.

Great solution for storage and display
I needed a solution that took all my router bits out of their storage cases. I was building a french cleat wall and these provided an excellent solution. They hold 1/4" shank bits well; I don't have any 1/2" shanks so I cannot comment. The hold power of the plastic in the wood is pretty good too. Recommend that once you press the plastic holder into your material, don't try to pry it out. The initial friction fit is tight enough.

I have a Rockler router table and in the February issue of Woodworkers Journal magazine there is an article in it on adding cabinetry to the router table using these inserts and since Rockler has them on sale at $4.99 a package now, I'm thinking it's the perfect time to start this project.

How many 1/2" bit inserts are in a pack? Will Rockler offer "1/2" bit inserts only" or "1/4" bit inserts only" packs in the future?
Gabriel R on Jan 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: All inserts will accommodate 1/2" bits. They are able to fit both sizes of bit. As to the second question, I doubt Rockler will change the product offering since the current design fits both sizes.
Have the foam holders - bits too tight - do these Rockler bit inserts grab the shank tightly or are the bits easily removed (plan horizontal storage) - thanks?
G I on Apr 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I am very happy with these inserts. Very light effort to remove the bits but they hold them tight enough that they are secure.
What is the depth of the 1/2" portion of the storage insert?
Michael S on Mar 4, 2018
BEST ANSWER: 0.435” at the 1/2” portion.
What is the outside diameter of the top lip and there a recommended clearance between the inserts
Frank L on Sep 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Tops on router bit sleeves are 1 inch wide.Spacing will depend on various router bit dimensions.
What storage tray would U recommend for the bit inserts?
Larry H on Aug 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I built 2 trays and a box with a lid for them to sit in. Both trays are 16" x 12" x 3/4". In one I tray I drilled 60 holes, 6 rows of 10 each centered on a grid spaced 1 1/2" apart. The other try has 20 holes, 4 rows of 5 centered on a 2" grid to one side. On that other side of that tray I also routed out a 3" x 10" by 3/8" deep sections to hold hex keys and spare bearings. These inserts are great, they hold onto the bit shaft without it being too tight to remove.
Does it work for 6mm bit?
Claude on Apr 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don’t have any router bits with a 6mm shank but all the 1/4” shank router bits work very well with these inserts.
The price is quoted per "pack". What is included in a "pack"?

Will these ever be made so they fit the 5/8" (rather than 1/2") hole drilled for the Router Bit Storage inserts, so all the holes in my shop will be interchangeable when necessary?
